Hi kima & LG,

Like Kerri, I'm game for whatever the majority decides, but would like to vote for

The Mistress of Spices
Endurance
Mansfield Park

I believe this is going to be great FUN, while also most educational and interesting! Thank you for providing us with this forum!

Here I am! Sorry to be so late. I tried to post on Monday but the board was acting up again and I wasn't able to and yesterday I didn't have a chance to check in. Thanks for posting the list Kima. Here's how I propose we try voting.

Below is the list from Kima's post. To vote, copy the list into your message and place a mark like this / next to the books you are interested in. (As you can see, I've already placed marks for Kerri, Sara Emily and myself). The next person should copy the list from the most recent post (not the one from this message) and place a / next to the books they are interested in, and so forth. This way each new message will have all the other votes in it as well and we can see a running total of the books people are most interested in.
To copy into a message:
highlight the text you want to copy while you are reading the message;
press control-c;
click on "Post Reply";
click your cursor into the window to type your reply;
type Control-V which will paste your copied text into the new window.

If you want to add a title, copy the list, type the title you want to add at the bottom of the appropriate category and place a / next to it (to indicate your vote).

I hope this doesn't seem too confusing. I thought it would be useful to have a running total of people's preferences. If you want to see how this voting should look please see the following thread: http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/Archives/Archive-000002/HTML/20010301-1-002430.html

If you want to read reviews or info on any books before voting check out the original book group thread http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/Forum2/HTML/000466.html or http://www.amazon.com

Thanks for coming to the rescue LG! http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/smile.gif Now do wwe set a voting deadline or just wait until it seems everyone has voted who wants to? The way these boards have been acting lately maybe we should be generous with the time. (As if it were written in stone or something!!)
Anyway I will post an alert on the GReat Foods board if I can get in!!

This is both difficult- because I want to select more than one in each category (but I won't http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/smile.gif) and wonderful, because I'm excited to read (just about http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/wink.gif)any of these!

Linda- I just read the thread about the CLBB reunion trip (you posted the thread as an example of how our voting tally should look)

So now I'm intrigued! What happened to the trip? I want to go!! http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/smile.gif

Okay, here goes...I have to be a party pooper and say that Fanny Price is my least favorite Austen character. I bet she would've disapproved of my favorite Austen heroine, Elizabeth Bennett. http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/wink.gif Unfortunately, I just re-read P&P for about the thousandth time, so I have to vote for Mrs. Dalloway on classics.

And coming around the bend we see Mrs. Dalloway and Fanny Price going neck and neck...the crowd is on their feet.. skirmishes erupt amongst normally quite civilised Austen fans...a few laps to go before we know the winner, but Bob, this is one exciting race.....

Yay it's working!

KValley: The trip became the Weekend with CL trip that is happening at the beginning of June. If you want more info, the trip has it's own bulletin board called "Weekend of Cooking Light." Also, there's a link to more info on the CL main web page.

mandarin2j: I totally agree re: Fanny Price. Have you seen the new movie? An interesting take on the novel (turns Fanny Price into what the screenwriter thinks Jane Austin might have been like). Also, have you ever seen the film Metropolitan? There's a funny scene in that movie where two characters are discussing Mansfield Park and one character comments sarcastically about the "moral degeneracy of putting on a play." However, the movie (Mansfield Park) makes all of that seem much more racey than the book.

You are priceless Julie!! It is exciting to watch the votes come in- okay so I lead a quiet life!! http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/wink.gif. Actually today I woke up with a nasty cold- I don't know anyone else with one. And at this time of year. Well back to the couch and my BOOK.
What about a deadline??? How about we say next Wednesday, May 16th. Oh the suspense...

OH! This is what that board is all about! I came on too late to join in, but I hope they make this an annual event- I'd love to go next year. Thanks for letting me know http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/smile.gif Julie

PS LOVE "Metropolitan" and anything Wilt Stillman (director). I also recommend "Barcelona" and "Last Days of Disco" to everyone - brilliant!

LGBurns: My MIL and I went to see it the weekend it came out. DH, MIL & I were in San Francisco visiting FIL (long story!), and she and I had a "girl's evening" where we went and caught the film. I was really expecting something with the wit and quality of at least Emma, so I was disappointed. I didn't care for the politicizing of slavery and making the benevolent (if clueless) Sir Thomas into a nasty, slave-dealing perv. While a true characterization of many of the people who benefited from the forced labor of African and indigenous slaves, it wasn't true to the book in the least. Austen never left writings indicating that she was aware of the evils of slavery, much less her stance on it, so I thought it was inappropriate to inject something into the book that just wasn't there. I didn't expect it to live up to P & P, but that had more to do with the book itself. Fanny Price is no Elizabeth Bennett. I even prefer muddled, silly Catherine from Northanger Abbey to Fanny. Anyway…

I did see Metropolitan but only once, right after it came out. I remember liking it, but that's about it! Maybe it's time to watch it again for references I never would have gotten at age 19. http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/wink.gif
