Taking a quick getaway with my DH, who has never been to VT, right before Christmas. Am looking for a nice, non-frilly but a little luxe place to stay. Am flexible about location. Would like a fireplace/jacuzzi but one or the other would suffice. Any favorites out there?

Thanks, Melissa

I used to go to Harriman Reservoir each weekend in the summer as kid, and passed by a few nice places in Wilmington regulary, websites below. We've been to these places for meals/activities, and I always wanted to stay there but never did. Wilmington is a cute little town that has a small downtown area that you can walk around. It's not too far away from Mount Snow if you like to ski as well. About a half hour West of Bennington, so you could pop over there for a day and then back to Wilmington for the night.

We stayed at the Willough Vale Inn on lake Willoughby during our honeymoon in June. I highly recommend it. It is the sister inn to the Green Mountain Inn in Stowe. Not being in Stowe brought the price down and they often run great internet specials. We stayed in the gazebo suite. The pictures on their website didn't due it justice, it was huge, well appointed and luxurious with out being "frou-frou." Complete with jacuzzi and fireplace.

We like the Windham Hill Inn. It's refined, not frilly (I hate those places!). They have a wonderful restaurant that's part of the inn.

We love Manchester, VT, but the inn we stay at is definitely not luxe! Maybe you can do a search and find something you'd like. We did attend a wedding nearby at a very nice inn, the Wilburton in Manchester. Also, check out the Equinox in Manchester, which is more resort/spa.

Which part of Vermont would you like to stay in, or how far are you willing to drive?

Is the Northeast Kingdom out of consideration as being too far? If not, the Wildflower Inn in Lyndonville, on one of the most beautiful mountain roads in the state.

We love Stowe and have stayed in several inns before buying our little vacation place. It's our home away from home.

My favorite inns:
Green Mountain Inn has a new section with a gorgeous suite w/ fireplace, jacuzzi, canopy bed. Heavenly...
Von Trapp Lodge is breathtaking. A little piece of Austria in the USA.
Golden Eagle Resort is old-fashioned and homey. We refer to it as "Gramma's house."
All of these have websites.

We've stayed at Green Mountain and Willough Vale ( in their cottages), but I think our favorite place was the Stoweflake in Stowe. They have condos and townhouses in addition to the inn. Plus they have a great gym facility AND spa(which they're known for!). I liked the soft robe so much I bought one! I know they have holiday specials/rates going on right now because they e-mail me. Not only is it a nice facility, it's in a super location. You're right off RT 100. Ben & Jerry's museum and ice cream plant is only 15 minutes away, along with Green Mountain coffee warehouse ( you can get incredible deals on the coffee!). Cabot's has a store that offers lots of cheese samples, chips, salsas, and spreads at prices you won't get at home! There's also a pottery place on the same property as Cabot. We have friends we visit in the Northeast Kingdom , about 40 minutes north of Stowe. Yes, Stowe is rather touristy, but it is pretty, has good restaurants, shopping, skiing, and sightseeing. A good central location for my family!

My Uncle owns a really cute B&B in Barre. It offers a discount to Magicians and Librarians :p

He is a really great person, my mom and dad grew up in Montpelier so he really knows his stuff about the area. He'll give you a walking tour, they have a great dog Max. His GF makes a wonderful breakfast and sews all the quilts. It is right down the road from that Diner that is known for using all locally produced ingredients - I am pretty sure the restaurant was featured in CL. I wish I could remember the name....

Anyway, the inn is call Maplecroft Bed and Breakfast

Hope you have fun! Vermont is a great place.

You folks are the greatest! This is super- I will do some research at lunch and see what I can find...as for location, I'm thinking not too far up - we're almost an hour south of Boston, and I don't want to spend too much of the 2-3d driving. We don't get away often (almost never with a 3 1/2 yo!).

Thanks again- !!!

We stayed at the Jackson House (http://www.jacksonhouse.com/) in Woodstock VT and had a wonderful stay. We had done a wine dinner package and the food was really wonderful. Woodstock is very picturesque and it is close to Quechee Gorge. The restaurant at the Simon Pierce glass place was wonderful for a lunch and had a great view of the mill. It is also really interesting to tour and shop the Simon Pierce facility.
