Summer is here (or in my case has been for awhile and will be for awhile!) the pool is at a ripe temp of 85 degrees and I would like to do some exercises in the pool. The problem is, I've never taken a water aerobics class and just am not sure what are some of the best types of exercises to do in the water. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Have you thought about doing deep water running? My gym offers a deep-water aerobics class that I was doing for awhile, and it was great. You use a special floatation belt that keeps you from sinking, and then you can do all kinds of moves, including with water dumbbells and noodles. One of the main ones is just "running" in the water - it's harder than it sounds! I'm sure that if you could find a belt in a fitness store you could find someone to help explain how to use it. It really is very good exercise, and then you can get some cardio in plus some toning if you add the strength moves.

Here are a couple of links... http://www.nyrrc.org/divisions/training/undercover2.htm http://www.totalfitnessnetwork.com/Fitness/Deepwater_run.html http://www.calgaryherald.com/vitality/stories/000420/3965945.html

Good luck!

Jen,

Thanks for the input and the links, there was alot of good information on all of them. I'm going to see if I can pick up a flotation belt at the pool store.

djoygirl,

Thanks for you input as well, I did check one site and they have the belts, but I think I'll check the pool store 1st and if they don't have what I'm looking for then I know where I can order one.

Ann, I haven't done any water aerobics, either, but I know there are alot of different moves you can do. Water exercise is good too, b/c it's non-impacting, and only provides positive resistance, so you don't get soreness (like you do from weight lifting).

Maybe you could try getting a video or book to show you a few things. Try sprintaquatics.com, or FWonline.com

Ann,
I am singing the praises of "Good Moves 2000" again! Visit the Good Moves 2000 section of the CL website; It has an archive with each issues workouts and includes an exercise/pool workout by Gin Miller titled "Vive la Resistance". It's in the August 2000 issue of CL, page 78. http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/smile.gif Zinnia

Zinnia,

Thanks for the info re: the good moves 2000. I'll definetly check it out, I still have that issue and my DD has tech rehersal today for her dance recital, so I know what reading material i'll be bringing with me.
