I'm going on a "Women in the Wilderness" 3 day weekend sponsored by Washington Outfitters and Guides Association, the end of June.

(We have horses and do trail riding)

Anyway, the classes include Survival, Orienteering, wilderness first Aid, DUTCH OVEN COOKING, Archery, Riflery, Horse Handling, Packing, mantying, slinging, Fly Fishing, Leave not trace camping, etc...etc...

All in the beautiful Teanaway River Valley---KValley, you know this area, I am sure...

Anyway, just had to share with you all- Not too many of my friends relate to this kind of stuff.. my mother says "Oh, that's nice, Paula..." like she's thinking "how do you keep your fingernails clean at a place like that?" I love my mom.... http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/smile.gif

oh, browneye- the Teanaway is sooo beautiful. We just took a drive there the other night (it's about 15-20 miles from Ellensburg) and fantasized about have a piece of land of our own there someday-DH wants horses again and I want goats- we both want a vineyard. Our wedding reception was held in the Teanaway-Swauk Grange. Blissful...

THis is so funny- I just signed up for a 3 day all women's kayaking trip in the San Juans at the end of June!! There is still space, so if anyone wants to go- it's pretty inexpensive, all equipment and meals included (it's not too far from you, Maureen!!! Hint hint)

Your trip sounds great though, browneye- do you have to have horses to participate? DO you have to know anything about horses (I was 14 the last time I rode a horse)? I am totally game to learn. I haven't put down money yet on my trip and there are other weekends... seriously. DH is going away for SIX WEEKS this summer and I am really looking to keep myself occupied.

KValley-
You don't have to know anything about horses...necessarily...I noticed on the registration form there is a place where you check off your riding experience and there is a spot for "none", so obviously they are open to everyone.
This is my first year, but most women come back year after year after year...it books up fast.

We also dream of getting out of the rat-race of Western Washington and owning our own space over on the dry side! We are in Redmond, but I am from Spokane originally. We are always looking at Real Estate over that way. I need easy major airport access for my job, however, which limits us. If the pass closes, I am afraid I'd be stuck.
We have 3 horses. I won't be bringing any of them to this, it doesn't sound like it is at all necessary. I just want to focus on the different activities and learning..Here is the link to the Outfitter Web site, then go into the "events" area, click on "women in the wilderness" and you can check it out for yourself!! They are located right in Ellensburg!

I can't wait! I'm going by myself, don't know a single soul- I am the daring type, aren't I? http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/biggrin.gif

I travel a lot with my job, too- about 7-10 days a month. It's an hour and 45 minutes from my door to Sea Tac- the only real traffic is the exit onto South 405 from I-90- the Renton S-curves, as you know, can get a little tricky.

There were a couple of times this winter when I had an evening flight into or an early morning out of Seattle and I just stayed the night near the airport, so DH wouldn't have to drive over the pass or I wouldn't have to drive myself after dark. My company paid for it...Honestly though, the distance and the weather over the pass really hasn't been a problem.

There is also an airport in Yakima with constant connections to Seattle, but claustrophobia prevents me from flying prop planes, so I make the drive to Sea Tac...

I am going to check into this Teanaway weekend! Thanks for the info!

Paula,

I put down my deposit for the Women in the Wilderness weekend! I am so excited. THe dog-sitter is reserved, I'm unpacking a set of thermal underwear, I can't wait!

Thanks so much for telling us about your adventure- it was right under my nose and I never would have known!

See you in a month http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/smile.gif

Julie

Now, I am going to try and get some of us together for sea kayaking in July. Stay tuned!

If you haven't ridden much lately, I would recommend that you try to do some trail riding or lessons prior to the weekend. I was a very experienced rider who doesn't have horses anymore and went on a weekend trip last year. Boy was I sore. I forgot about some of those muscles. I really didn't remember that I had them until the next day after sleeping on the ground and I got stiff. It was tough to get back on the horse for another day of riding.

hi cchhbb,

Thanks for the warning! I won't get in any riding prior to the trip, but it's meant for beginners as well as more experienced riders, so I should be okay.

Besides, there is SOOO much to do- I can't possibly spend all of it on horseback. There's the fly fishing, spinning and weaving, plant and wildlife id, tracking, Dutch Oven cooking (we all cook for the camp!), journaling, mule handling and packing, orienteering....ohmigosh- I want to go NOW http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/smile.gif

What a beautiful area for a getaway. My great aunt had a cabin on the Teanaway River when I was growing up. We spent a lot of time over there in the late spring/early summer. Lots of fond memories. I took DH (when he was a SO) to that area and we camped and hiked. Alot of my relatives are buried in the old cemetaries in Roslyn. My maternal grandmother was raised there and that is where she met my grandfather when he was working in the mines.

I was married in Mt. Pisgah Presbyterian Church in Roslyn- DH and I lived there our first year of marriage http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/smile.gif It is so lovely. THe cemetery is fascinating. A huge resort is set to go in just outside of Roslyn- I'm pretty disappointed- it's so serene, so undeveloped, and that peace is certain to be compromised....

Paula-

I received my Women in the Wilderness information over the weekend- did you get yours? I'm laughing because I have to dig out the winter clothing I finally put away last month!! Also, I have to find an inexpensive pair of riding boots! And living in the dry part of the state, I don't have decent raingear. DH and I are cutting work early on Friday to meet my dad at the Mariner's game, but I think we'll leave even earlier so I can get to REI.

I'm getting very excited!!

Hey, Julie-
I was on the road Monday-Tuesday, but when I got home last night my info was here! I am excited. I am sure that you will be okay as a beginner horseback-rider. It doesn't sound like you even have to do a ride if you don't want to. I may choose not to-if horses are limited, since I have 3 horses of my own and others may not have the opportunity to ride.

I have an extra pair of riding boots, I wear a size 7.5-8. If you are that size I would be happy to lend them...also a good hiking boot with heel will surely suffice! Just not tennis shoes or flat-soled shoes. If you have a pair of old cowboy boots hanging around, those work too!
Only a few more weeks!
This weekend my hubby and I are going to Winthrop/Mazama. We are staying at the Freestone Inn. We'll be flyfishing too. Can't wait. We do these little getaways about twice a year. We had to book this one months ago!

Paula- how was your weekend? I hope the rain didn't catch you. DH and I were in Seattle from Friday evening until last night. Fortunately, we had great weather for the Mariners' game on Friday (and a win!!!), but I felt sorry for those on Saturday who had such chilly temps and an annoying loss.

Thank you so much for the offer of boots. Unfortunately, my tootsies are an 8.5-9. I think my hiking boots are just too flat-heeled and have too much traction. We went looking today and I have one more place to check tomorrow. I want to get an all-purpose boot so I can wear it for activities other than riding.

I bought a new sleeping pad this weekend. Now I just have to find my gloves....

We had a great weekend! Very relaxing, the Freestone Inn is very beautiful. Just came home tonight. The weather was great all weekend, sunny and warm. We fished and goofed around and read books! Today it started pouring rain, however. Made it easier to come home and get into "work Mode" though!...
Thanks for asking..
