I thought this might be fun. I'm thinking of buying and can't decide on a name1 I would like a female westie terrier but don't want a "common" name.
Any Suggestions?

I was just discussing baby names with a friend today and we both love the name "Lucy". This is also my dog's name and the name of my favorite character from C.S. Lewis's "The Chronicles of Narnia"

I wouldn't name my baby girl Lucy, since it is a perfect fit for and already taken by my dog- it will always be one of my favorite names!

Her breed is from the British Isles, Im thinking Erin, Tara, Kelsy-or maybe angel. Of course, I had 2 doxis. my favorite girl I named Schnapps, the other was cognac. I have a boy dog now, he's Juneau. I love the name Bailey for a boy dog too. It seems they're easier to name.

I love my dog Bella, both her and her name! (I also have a dog Brandy, and while I LOVE HER TO DEATH, I'm not wild about her name). But BELLA!! Oh man, you'd just have to see her. She really is Bella!

Emily,

We have an Abbey, too -- spelled in honor of Abbey Road.

We also have a Casey and a Nacho, all beagles.

Another favorite name of mine is Molly, for Molly & Desmond, of course.

Naming the dog was really easy in our family. My daughter was 4 at the time, and she had an imaginary dog named Katie. If you asked to see her, she'd tell you Katie had eaten too much doggie food and was at the doctor. When we brought home our new mineature schnauzer puppy, she looked at her and said "well here's Katie" - and she's been Katie ever since! (That was 14 years ago, and Katie is still going strong)

I just read an article about a cat named Sidwalk, and thought that name was so fun!

My dog's name is Ki...you're welcome to borrow it :-) (most people spell it Kai)

Anyway... some good tips on picking a name for a dog... Since it's very important for a dog to recognize his name and obey commands, you should pick a name that is short and has hard consonants (sp?) in it. Animals will be more responsive to sounds like "T", "S", "K" than "B" or "L". It will also help when they get older.

When we bought our Pembroke Welsh Corgis finding names was a real pain. The breeder insisted that "Welsh dogs need Welsh names." Given that we weren't willing to name our dogs Lloyd, Gwynneth or Gwendolyn, we were really stuck. Finally, I got out a map of Wales and started looking for names. We ended up naming our girl Denbigh (pronounced den-bee) after a small town in northern Wales. Our boy is named Talbot after the city of Port Talbot in southern Wales. It's been a hoot at the vet's office, where the staff either can't say Denbigh (given the unusual spelling) or they confuse the owner's name with the dog's name. I can't tell you how many laughs we've shared with the staff at the vet's office.

Fun thread!

You guys have some GREAT pet names! I LOVE THEM!

We are petless by choice http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/smile.gif now (after YEARS of dog and cat ownership)!

Our dog (a shephard/lab mix) was named Sasha and our Siamese cat named Suki.

Our best friends (childless by choice) recently broke their "no kids, no pets" rule http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/smile.gif and got a Shih-Tzu (sp?!) puppy. He is SOOO adorable and WILL be "given everything" and spoiled rotten! His name? Reilly -- as in "the life of..." I think that's TOO PERFECT!!!

My 2 dogs are named Abbie (chocolate lab, after no one in particular, we just liked the name) and Bailey (after Baileys Irish Cream - she's a yellow lab).

I've wanted to name my dogs after characters in my favorite movie, To Kill a Mockingbird, but I've never had a pet that fit the names Jem, Scout, Dill, or Atticus. Maybe Calpurnia? Cal for short? http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/biggrin.gif

Okay, here's ours- we have a 100lb black lab named Jed and a bichon named Lindsey (that was her mother's name). My cat is named Stryper after the Christian rock band since is white with stripes all down his back. I can thank my sister for that name.

My favorite name, though, would have to be Augie. I had a miniature poodle named Augie and this dog was my best friend. She lived to be 17 years old.

Other names I think are cool for dogs are Shane and Harley. My sister's dog was Jasper (big big dog!!) My husband used to have a cat named Frisbee- I thought that was a great name.

What a cute topic for us pet lovers.

Our Basenji/Huskie is named "Chesapeake." It's a mouthful, but we call her "Chessie" for short. She has light blue eyes the color of water, hence the name (after the Chesapeake Bay). I've always liked the idea of naming dogs after places. Other names we considered - Kona, Fenway, etc. Other dogs I've met named after places - Dakota, Phoenix, Sierra.

I have a bichon named Sable. Everyone thinks that I have a strange sense of humor since she is white, but my husband is the Ford dealer.

Our 90 lb black lab cross is named Casey (he came with the name, so we didn't get to choose). Our cats are Kiki, Emmett, and Elvis. We used to have a Katie.

Our dog growing up was named Monster (Mons).

I think Bear & Moose are cool for large breeds.

Growing up, I had dogs named Seamus (Irish setter), Rosie (Irish setter), George (Cocker Spaniel), and Higgins (also a Cocker, named after the Magnum PI character).

We have no dogs now, only cats. Learned (after Judge Learned Hand) and Vergil. Various cat names in the past were Hopscotch, Tigger (aka Rooney Roo), OC (Outside Cat), Boo, Bubba, Alex, and Mr. Scruffy.

Sadie is my brother's dog, a lab mix that's so happy all the time. Her name really fits a happy girldog personality.

I've always thought naming a dog a more human name is a hoot - like, Steve or Jeff for a male, of Jennifer, Melissa or Mrs. anything for a female i.e. Mrs. Robinson would be a good one....

I read about a lady who has a bulldog named Diesel. I thought that was a great name for a "tough-guy" type of dog.

My former roommate brought home a tiny poodle/bichon mix . He fit in the palm of your hand, he was the cutest furriest thing EVER!

We wanted to name him something ironic, like a tough guy name. Melrose Place was big at the time so we named him Jake. It turned out to be perfect cause he became the toughest little fluffy white dog.

A little OT, my cat is named Misha because when I got her I thought she looked foreign and exotic. The name just popped into my head while I was watching her our first day together. I have never heard anyone else that has named a pet Misha.

I love "Ruby", a favorite character from a children's books. Also, "Sasha" - there is something about the "mouthfeel" (can't think of a better way to put it) in saying "Sasha" that appeals to me. sally

What about Nora, as in Nora Charles of The Thin Man fame? Or after Asta, her dog? I don't know what kind of dog Asta was, but he was some kind of terrier, and the name is neutral enough for boy or girl dog.

Daner94:

My SIL had a white cat named Misha who passed away a couple of years ago. (spelled the same, too!)

My sister's old beau had an Irish Setter named Moses. When I asked about the origin of the name, the beau replied, "'Cause he's red, see?" (Get it...red, see? red sea?).

A funny set of cat names I heard about was Hey, you and Who, me?.

Growing up we always had to name our pets "people" names because my mother refused to use cutesy names. So we had a Jasmine (Siamese cat), Jeffrey (Siamese cat), Joshua (huge mutt cat), Jefferson, (Siamese cat), an Andy (mini poodle) and a Phred (second mini poodle).

I also had a Madeleine (Norwegian Forest Cat), Simon (huge mutt cat), a Norman (large grey goose), a Samantha (a duck) and an Edwina (mutt cat named after Holly Hunter's character in Raising Arizona.

We did have some exceptions to the "people name" rule. We had a gigantic German Shephard named Goliath, a collie named Amen! (last of a litter of seven) and a rabbit named Hassenfeffer.

My parents have a miniture schnauzer (black and silver) and her name is Snickers. She's a sweetheart, and what a personality! Our last schnauzer (all black) was named Cinders (also female). And speaking of trying to keep names within the region the dog came from, my boyfriend and I have a Weimaraner (german). We checked out a book from the library on German names, and came up with Paxton. It definitely fits him!

This is great! I like to read the check-in list at the vet because everyone has to write down their pet's name. I saw "cornbread" once.

My dogs are dauchunds, Flash (my neighbors from Equador call him "Flashito) and Scully. Scully - as in agent Dana Scully of the X-files, of course she is a red doxie!

Here are some fun ones I have seen

Mastif - Khaki
Mongrel - Scratch (Scratch the dog)
Mongrel - Oatmeal
blue tick hound - annabelle
greyhound - Uma
Irish setter - Log truck

My next door neigbor has a new puppy named Malcolm.

Did you ever make a decision??

I've got a little fuzzy mutt (male) that I named Riley, and it fits him so well! Our female Siberian Husky was named by her original family before they dumped her at the shelter (grrrrr...) and her name is Sasha. Fitting for a Russian, right? DH calls her 'Chewie' most of the time, however, because she is constantly 'talking' to us and she sounds exactly like Chewbacca from Star Wars! http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/biggrin.gif

I have a beagle mix named Indy. He's a male, but really funny I listened to a talk show one night and a caller had a daughter named Indie. So I guess you could use it for a female. My dog was named for Indy 500.
