View Full Version : Anyone have Exercise Induced Asthma?
I too have exercise induced asthma. You know you have it when you cannot get a good breath and also wheeze while trying to get it. I find that mine is worse while exercising outside vs. inside. I always try to have an inhaler on hand...it makes a world of difference!!

I have exercise-induced asthma also, and for me, it's much worse in cold/dry weather and for some activities (running, cycling). I get wheezy and have difficulty getting air to my lungs. I can definitely tell the difference between when it's my asthma and when I'm just working out hard. You should get to a physician and have your lung capacity checked. If it is in fact just exercise-induced asthma, you can get a prescription for an inhaler, such as albuterol, that will help get more oxygen to your lungs while you're exercising.
Heidi, do see your doctor. Asthma left untreated can be very serious, even fatal if you suddenly have a worse attack and do not recognize it, have no medication to control it, etc. We're still trying to learn what triggers my son's difficulty, but one website has an exercise you could do to get an idea of what asthma feels like: get a drinking straw and hold it in your mouth with one hand. Pinch your nose with the other hand and breathe through the straw....that gives you an idea of what it feels like to have restricted airways/ You might try that when you have not been exercising, but do see your doctor and refrain from heavy exercise until you do.

Do any of you suffer from Exercise Induced Asthma? When I am running, I get so short of breath and often it feels like my the back of my throat closes up so I can't get any deep breaths. I feel like I should be a patient in a tuberculosis ward or something! How do I know if I am just out of breath, or if I really could have EIA? I have been meaning to get to the doctor to ask him about this, but just haven't made it yet.

The three posts above mine say exactly what I was going to http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/wink.gif. My 18yo son has had exercise-induced asthma most of his life and (24/7), has an inhaler handy at all times-even when/if he doesn't need it.
We have several-one in his car, one in his room, one at job (in locker), and one in kitchen drawer. It is very important to go to the Dr. before doing anything else.
Good luck and let us know how you are! http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/smile.gif Zinnia

In addition at wheezing, you may experience a "seal like" cough. This was a sure sign for me. I agree... go to doctor to figure this out. My brother-in-law's mother died from asthma.. it is serious business.
