View Full Version : What's your favorite version of A Christmas Carol?

I was discussing this with friends today. My favorite is the 1951 version with Alastair (?) Sim. One friend prefers the 1970 version with Albert Finney, and another says it isn't Christmas without watching Mr. Magoo's Christmas Carol.
Anyone want to join in? I do recall watching versions with George C. Scott and Patrick Stewart. The Alastair Sim one is my favorite by far, though.

The Alastair Sim Christmas Carol is my favorite as well, Rhi-Anon. He played that perfectly, and to me, it isn't Christmas until I see this movie (and White Christmas).
The 1984 CBS production of A Christmas Carol starring George C. Scott was outstanding, and I was happy to come across the DVD a couple of years ago. Edward Woodward was great as the Ghost of Christmas Present.
I recall that Patrick Stewart played Scrooge in another t.v. production in 1999, and although it had a different tone than the others, I thought it was very good.
There is a 1930's Christmas Carol starring Reginald Owen that is run on t.v. sometimes, but it was never one of my favorites.
There was a Lifetime movie based on A Christmas Carol starring Susan Lucci about 10 years ago, called "Ebbie." I actually like that one and catch it on re-runs once in a while.

A Mr. Magoo fan here! Come to think of it, I haven't seen that on in a LONG time!
Fun thread!

There are three versions that I watch every Christmas: the Alistair Sim, the George C. Scott, and "Scrooged" with Bill Murray. Each of them is outstanding, I think.
I also like the Reginald Owen, but I just don't think he comes up to either Sim or Scott.
For some reason, I don't like the Patrick Stewart version at all. It's strange, because I think Stewart is a great actor and I saw him do a solo performance of "A Christmas Carol" on the stage in New York quite a few years ago; that was really incredible. But I just don't like his movie version very much.

Definitely Scrooged. Bill Murray is perfect in that movie, almost as good as in Groundhog Day.

I have several versions of A Christmas Carol, and I watch them all every year. I also re-read the book every year--I have the annotated version with wonderful footnotes!
My favorites are the Magoo version and the one with George C. Scott as Scrooge.

I was going to say "What Child Is This" by Vanessa Williams, but then realized that I'd read the heading without the capitals.
Oh well, I said it anyways.

The George C. Scott version is my favorite, hands-down. If anyone hasn't seen it, they definitely should.

Got to be the A. Sims version.
George C. Scott (humming title theme while typing).
As an aside for fans of this version, when my son was about 6 years old, he was given the word "chain" as a spelling word and asked to use it in a sentence. He wrote "It is a ponderous chain." :D
PS I confess. I love the Mister Magoo one as well.

I love the Albert Finney.... I've been singing "Father Christmas" for weeks...
In fact I watched it again yesterday and I've got to find it in DVD, as my VHS may not last much longer....
Tonight I will watch the Sound of Music and on Christmas morning, My Fair Lady...This is my Christmas Tradition...

Is it possible? I truly don't recall ever having seen a film version of A Christmas Carol! There was one terrible TV production DBF and I attempted to sit through a couple of years ago, but that's it. No, surely I've seen it on film and forgotten.
I came across this thread last night after what's becoming a Christmas Eve tradition of mine, listening to Jonathan Winters' version on NPR (http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=4225458). A wonderful thing to listen to while cooking up Christmas treats. I am definitely in the "radio is the most visual medium" camp, and that was a very enjoyable hour, indeed.
Sadly, I don't think "A Car Talk Christmas Carol, the Scroogiozzi Brothers" aired this year! My favorite characters were Robert Siegel as Bob "Robert Siegel" Cratchit and Ira Glass as Tiny Ira. LOL!

Yes it did, and I missed it. I believe that it was last weekend (16th or 17th?). I also missed the Jonathan Winters version this year. But I did see the Mr. Magoo version! ;)
