What kind of snob are you?

What kind of food/drink snob are you. Are you a wine sob or penzeys snob or maybe a "I would never buy/eat any prepared boxed item snob?"
I am a pizza crust snob. I would never buy a prepared store crust. I guess that comes from my
love of working with dough. I have been making pizza crusts for years and have gotten pretty good at it. I am also a pasta sauce snob. I am not Italian but married into an Italian family of great cooks. I think if I bought the red sauce in a jar my DH or in-laws would kick me out of the family!!! I am always trying to improve my cooking skills so I thought this thread would give me some more ideas to do that! Anyone else out there proud of being a snob?

Here's a fun "older" thread that the newbies might enjoy reading:

I am proud to be a butter snob. I detest margarine, though I did succumb to its easy spreading appeal when my kids were younger. Now I am back to butter and will never look back.

I think that I am a snob of many things, here are a few:

wine- Yes, life is too short to drink bad wine. I am not a big drinker, so when I have wine I tend to go for the good stuff.

fast food- I don't eat it and never will.

packaged snack foods- I am really snobby about this. I usually only eat baked chips or tortilla chips, and not major brands (like Frito-Lay). Also, I don't eat hostess or Little Debbie type stuff. If I want a cookie, then I'm going to indulge in something really good (from a bakery or Central Market).

ice cream- Life is also too short to eat cheap ice cream. Growing up my mother bought us that square box stuff (store brand). Now I eat only the good stuff (Ben and Jerry, Hagen Daas, Blue Bell, etc...)

poor produce- You know what I mean. Those pathetic red delicious apples that appear at catered lunches, hotels, or air plane boxed lunches. Nothing is worse than mushy fruit.

aggie94 04-23-2002 11:10 AM

This one is hard for me to answer. I am a snob about food, I'll admit. I don't buy generic ever, I only buy real butter, I've become infatuated with Penzey's spices, I'm a total cheese snob, and I'm even a snob about alcohol even though I don't drink it (I like to buy wine and keep a well-stocked liquor cabinet, but never touch the stuff). I will buy pizza dough from the store, but not pre-made crusts. And I never ever buy frozen or previously frozen seafood - it's gotta be fresh!

On the other hand, I am a fast food junkie. I sometimes find myself craving McDonald's, Sonic, Chick-fil-A, or even Taco Bell. I also love Kraft Mac & Cheese and packaged ramen noodles. I buy junk food from time to time, but not often (I've been known to have a bag of Cheetos and a Coke for dinner) and you might just find a box of Twinkies in my pantry if you catch me on the right day. Oh, and when I "make" spaghetti, I use Prego. :o

So I guess you can say I'm a "balanced" snob. :D

LaraW 04-23-2002 11:17 AM

I am a coffee snob. I can't drink the stuff at the office. It's too weak and bitter. I can only drink freshly ground freshly brewed coffee.

I am also becoming a cheese snob. I became a beer snob a while ago and am working on becoming a wine snob. We joke about how our kids will be snobs acting like they don't know what hot dogs and mac & cheese is. We never have it!

boisewinesnob 04-23-2002 11:32 AM

Can you tell from my user name?????
But I don't limit my snobery to wine......also, coffee, garlic (won't touch the bottled or powdered:eek: ) laundry detergent, television programs, beef, and the list could go on if I thought about it.

Oh yes, my kids are already on their way when it comes to stale buns at a fast food place or whatever (which they hardly get anyways....they prefer "real" food) substandard food they come across.

lhall 04-23-2002 11:41 AM

Definately a food snob. Sort of a coffee, wine, beer snob. There are certain brands that I do NOT like, but I don't always like the most expensive stuff.

Have become a penzeys snob. You should have seen my face when I compared my paprika to the new penzeys paprika.

I'm sure there are other things I'm a snob about too.

GayeC 04-23-2002 11:46 AM

In: Real butter, fresh ground coffee, extra sharp cheddar cheese grated just before you use it, real vanilla

Out: Margarine, cake mixes, slice and bake cookies, pre-made pizza crusts, bags of shredded cheese, imitation vanilla

On the other hand, I make brownies from a mix (only the kind that has the package of Hershey's syrup!), occasionally eat a fast food hamburger, love Jello chocolate pudding (cooked, not instant), drink cheap wine, and occasionally let my children eat Pop Tarts (only brown sugar and cinnamon, unfrosted!).

Obviously I am confused and conflicted about my snobbery!

linsleyd 04-23-2002 11:48 AM

I really didn't think I was a snob about anything until I started reading this....

butter, beer, working on wine, cheese,.....

I admit to having boxes of rice, mac and cheese (it's my comfort food), spaghetti is always Classico unless it is a weekend and I have time to make homemade (it has to simmer for hours in meat for it to be REALLY good, according to DH), DH is still a child and has to have spaghetti-os and chef boyardee and ramen noodles. He also has every frozen food known to man for his midnight snacking and he is still skinnier than a bird.! Dh is definetly not a snob about anything except beer but he'll still drink a Pabst if it is all there is!

:D

oh! I am getting my first Penzey's order today so I am sure you can add that on to the list. I use to only bake my bread but I got out of the habit after going to college. I think I am going to start that up soon.... that is until life gets in the way :p :D

So, I guess I really am a budding snob. :D

I forgot the pie crusts as well. Won't make a pie unless there is time for the homemade crust and won't eat one that doesn't have a homemade crust.....

funnybone 04-23-2002 12:04 PM

I'm definitely a coffee snob. I have to have fresh beans from The Second Cup in Canada (that's what I got used to) so I order them monthly. I hate having coffee out, but when I do, it has to be in a paper cup, and not a styrofoam cup - can't stand the taste of coffee in styrofoam.

My DH says that I am a restaurant snob. I would rather eat less often out at a fantastic place, than regularly at Outback, Applebee's or any of those chains. I mean I do go, but I would rather not.

I am also a from scratch dessert snob. I very rarely will make a recipe that calls for a boxed cake mix (unless there are tons of other ingredients that will mask its fake flavor).

I love Penzey's Spices - their double vanilla, whole nutmeg and Vietnamese Cinnamon to name a few. I will buy other spice brands, but only if I need them right away. But I would rather put off a recipe and get the good stuff, rather than settle for something else.

I am a brand name snob as well - I can't think of anything that is generic that I have tried and liked. I bought the generic coffee filters once, and returned them as they made the grinds go into the pot. They were a touch smaller than Melitta, but it was enough to cause a disaster.

Angela 04-23-2002 12:04 PM

Pie crust--my mom taught me that one. She always has made her crusts from scratch (they are excellent BTW--nice and flaky--the crust, not her :D) She always would comment how terrible it is that people use frozen/refrigerated crusts. She taught me how to "do it right".

cherylopal 04-23-2002 12:15 PM

simply put- the best

more accurately- the best i can afford! :D

i'm the biggest snobbiest snob about real cheese- no velveeta or cheese whiz in a jar for baking. i even grate my own cheese.

cheryl

ClaraB 04-23-2002 12:15 PM

Well, I'm definitely a bread snob - I just don't buy storemade bread, other than the odd loaf of french bread to make stuffing or french toast. I'm also an iced tea snob - I refuse to drink instant iced tea, but love the brewed stuff (with a wedge of lemon, please:) ).

moonnstarsfan 04-23-2002 12:32 PM

I have to admit it, I am a soup snob. I can't stand canned soup, and the prices - don't even get me started. I completely enjoy making my own soups, knowing that not only are they more nutrious - they cost far less than those cans of blanned sodium paste that they are trying to pass off as soup.
Melinda

gertdog 04-23-2002 12:42 PM

I am also a soup snob. Mostly because of the amount of sodium in canned soups!

I am a butter snob, a big chocolate snob, and an ice cream snob as well.

And I am a confirmed grocery store snob. Wegmans or nothing for me! What will I do when I move this summer? :(

emily 04-23-2002 12:42 PM

I prefer to say that I'm particular rather than a snob ;)

But I admit, I am very snobby about food. I will never ever eat fast food, and the smell of Subway makes me gag. I use only fresh produce (well, since I've started working 12 hour days on a regular basis, I've begun to buy frozen fruit, but that's about it). I'm very particular about meat as well, it has to be a good cut, that's why when I was at Sam's last weekend I stocked up (thank g-d for my foodsaver :), which just got sent back to me!). Cheese, well, I'm getting there, although I have been known to break down and buy already grated :o (although never processed, blech) stuff. Wine, I'm all about finding inexpensive but good wines. Coffee, no, but tea, yes! Butter too. No chain restaurants either.

Man, I'm worse than I thought I was...

But I'm glad to see I'm now the only one :)

emilycat 04-23-2002 12:52 PM

Oh, gosh -- I believe I'm one of the biggest snobs out there -- I started that other thread, so I guess that was kind of predictable. :p

I pretty much turn my nose up at everything pre-done -- I wouldn't buy bagged spinach, shredded cheese, bread, vinaigrettes or mixes in any form (soups, cakes, rice in a box) if you gave me the money for them.

Then there's the quality -- no shrink-wrapped cheese, please (I would prefer it cut from the block); only produce from the farmer's market (okay, yuppie food store, whatever you want to call it ;) ) and I DO NOT buy snack food.
I also loathe chain restaurants and would not put one toe in a Chili's, Olive Garden or Outback.

I even hide my SO's stuff in the waaaay back of the fridge so no one visiting will think it's mine!!! :o

I'm also a wine snob and monumental beer snob -- I make my SO take his Bud Light to the recycling center because I don't want them to think I drink it!

Lastly, my mom says I'm a snob about being a snob: ("Eww -- I would never stay in a Four Seasons or Ritz Carlton in Europe -- it defeats the purpose of immersing yourself in the culture."

Okay, I've admitted that my nose is sky-high in the air -- so kick me over to the Martha boards -- they'll probably teach me a lesson when they find out I don't make my own cereal. :D

Ok, add Pie Crust Snob to my list as well.

Yes I will have been known to make a chicken pot pie using canned cream soup and canned (and fresh) veggies, but I ALWAYS make my own pie crust for it.

i've never been to wegmans but will there be a fresh fields/whole foods nearby? snobbery can be transferable ;)

Carolina68 04-23-2002 01:33 PM

I suppose I am a bit of a snob, I try to use very little processed food. I like to make my own salad dressings, marindades, soups, and muffins, but I will admit to keeping a box or two of rice mix in the pantry, a can of lowfat low sodium chicken broth, frozen pie crusts in the freezer, and a few other things for quick meals. I love to cook, but I am at work about 50 hours a week (thank goodness I can sneak on to this board a few times during the workday) and sometimes I come in and just don't have the energy to cook anything. For those days, I try to have something in the freezer homemade that I can take out, but occassionally I do resort to what I call "quick fix" foods. So I guess it goes both ways for me.

moonnstarsfan 04-23-2002 01:38 PM

I have to second the "I can't stand subway" post!!! I can't believe that they can take good ingredients such as vegies, turkey, wheat bread - and turn them into the most vile concoction known to woman kind.

dixie 04-23-2002 01:39 PM

fun -and funny-thread! I am a coffee snob, learning to be a wine snob, olive oil snob and I have to throw in that I am a toilet paper snob too...Charmin Ultra only!! (But I only like Miller lite beer and use a lot of Barilla pasta sauce to make mine go further...)

deb 04-23-2002 01:44 PM

Dixie, interesting...olive oil snob...
I love olive oil. Have never tried a really good olive oil. I just buy extra virgin, whatever I can find at the grocery store or Costco. Any brands you recommend? Educate me...how is the taste different.

linsleyd 04-23-2002 01:45 PM

Oh god, I forgot I am an olive oil snob and a hot sauce snob. This board is no good, look what I am learning about myself!

SusanMac 04-23-2002 01:50 PM

What a fun thread! I'm a snob for most things already mentioned -- wine big time, also beer, cheese (what the heck IS that stuff in the squirty can??).

No fast food ever, and yes, Subway falls into that category. Also hate the chain restaurants that all look and taste the same (why, oh why, is Olive Garden and Dominos so popular? i really dont' understand)

I'm also a cookie snob! Grew up completely on packaged grocery store cookies as a kid. Can't stand them now. How can anyone eat anything other than a homemade cookie? Makes me hungry for one.

Do we have any movie or book snobs?? I can't stand John Grisham (all his books are the same plot, aren't they?) and romance novels. Also, predictable Julia Roberts movies. Argh.

But dontcha eat Girl Scout Cookies???? Those are the only packaged cookies I eat.

:D

SusanMac 04-23-2002 02:05 PM

Oops! You're right. I did just polish away a box of Thin Mints and Scotties this past season. It seems like a rite of Spring somehow and a once-a-year adventure. While I do love them, I have noticed over the past few years liking them less than I used to (I contemplated that one over dunking the shortbread cookies in a glass of milk one after the other :-)
