    ISO a Sub for Raisins?

Help! I'm making butter tart bars from One Smart Cookie, and I don't have raisins! (Oh, dopey me!) They're for church tomorrow, and there's no place to get them... what can I sub? Chocolate chips? Nuts? other dried fruit?

I guess if you don't have raisins, you probably wouldn't have currants. I'm not familiar with the recipe, but I wonder if dried apricots would work.

If you don't have any dried fruit then I'd go with either the chips or nuts, JMHO.

I had a raisin crisis this morning, but was able to go out and buy currants.

I vote for either dried cranberries or chocolate chips.

    raisin substitute

I would substitute dried sour cherries, maybe snipped in half as they are bigger than raisins. I don't think anyone would complain about chocolate chips in butter bars! Another good flavor would be slightly toasted chopped pecans (toast lightly before stirring into batter--this really accetuates the butter flavor in the cookie). You may decide never to us plain old raisins again.

OOOoooo butter tarts....mmmm mmmm....sorry ...I think it's a French Canadian thing...I love those tarts....my mom makes them all the time too...hmmm....not sure what you could substitute and it's probably too late now anyways...my mom doesn't put raisins in all time so I'm sure you could leave them out with no problem...that probably isn't much help to you though...sorry...

Kay, what did you end up doing? And how did they come out?

I ended up using dried plums... you guessed it, good ol' prunes! I snipped them into a more raisin-like size, and used half the amount. I added a few more pecans than the recipe called for. I was a little nervous, since they were for church, and I hadn't tasted them, but they disappeared! I had one this morning, and it was a little sweeter than a normal butter tart, and a little darker, but they were delicious! Ya just never know, do ya?

Thanks for all the suggestions... I'll try some of them the next time I make them, especially the apricots... I was making these almost sugar-free, so the chocolate chips were out, but maybe another time...
