    How long does milk keep?

I just bought a gallon on whole milk for my toddler and didn't realize that the expiration date in April 9. I haven't opened it yet. Does any one know how long it keeps once opened? Should I discard it after the 9th even if it's only beed opened for a couple of days?

    Thanks!

I can't tell you how long it will "keep", but I keep milk until it smells/tastes sour no matter what the date is. So I'd just crack it open and give it a smell.

The date on dairy products is a SELL BY date, not an expiration date. The is the last date that the grocery store can have it on the shelf. These products are supposed to good for 7 days past the sell-by date. I have had some that lasted even longer if they weren't opened right away.

If you don't think you will use it before it goes bad you could always freeze some of it in containers. Leaving enough head space for expansion of course.

I only use milk for cooking, so this is how I do it. I buy 1/2 gallon and freeze in small containers until I need it.

If I had freezer space I would do this as I don't like the taste of milk, not even chocolate milk. So I am constantly buying milk and throwing away sour milk because I only use it in cooking and baking.

Milk *expires* 7 days after it is opened and that is assuming the date on the carton is still good.

I ALWAYS check the date on milk before buying because there have been so many times when I buy a gallon of milk and it expires 2 days later -- i hate that!

As mentioned it should last about 7 days (factors like how cold your fridge is, how cold the cooler in the store was make a difference). You can bake with sour milk. It's great in muffins, cakes, pancakes, waffles though I haven't tried it in cookies.
