    Decorating Mavens: Help this bath

I'm going to start my next painting project next week. Maybe you all have some fresh ideas for me. If nothing else, at least I'm doing my part to keep the activity going on the BB.

Ok, I posted a week ago about maybe stapling curtains to a mounting board but it was pointed out that a permanent hanging system might not be the best idea in a bathroom. True, never crossed my mind though. DOH! So let me explain the situation and show pictures and maybe you all can help me brainstorm and come up with a solution.

I'm doing the guest room. The bathroom in there is small, no window and very boring. I'm going to put in a new light and mirror so that will help. I also want to add some fabric. I don't think I can do a traditional shower curtain, it just isn't going to be the right size. So I was thinking of buying some of those sheer extra long white panels from IKEA. Then attaching them (somehow) over the shower door and sweeping them to the side (maybe with a drapery cord thingy) just to add something in there. Plus the shower door is super boring. Frosted glass. Builder special. Yuck.

The problem is how to attach them.

The area above the shower door is straight but then immediately next to the shower door (like touching the one corner) is angled because of the roof line. There's no way to get any type of drapery rod up there. See:

    (excuse the mud/drywall repairs)

    Showing the angled portion:

And the full thing. So I want to continue the fabric to the corner and sweep it back/gather it with a drapery hooky thingy on the wall next to the shower.

Also contemplating putting a small set of wood shelves right next to the shower to add some warmth in there.

I'm certainly no maven, but I have two thoughts.

First, how about a ceiling mount rod?

Second, that color looks beautiful. So warm and rich. What is the color/brand?

Ha! It must photograph well because we refer to it as "baby poop beige" and have been trying to eradicate it from our home. Trust me, you don't want whatever color it is.

I hadn't thought of a ceiling mount but I could only mount it on about 2/3 of the door area because of the slant. Right? Or am I thinking of the wrong thing?

The shower door looks fine. I'm not understanding the use of a fake fabric curtain in front of it. Why not focus on some other element that could serve a practical purpose like the shelves you mentioned. Is there any art on the walls? That might help too.

Another thought ... where do the guest towels hang? If you had a rod below the shelves the towels themselves could provide the fabric interest you're looking for.

No art up yet and I just took down the old rods (hence the drywall repair) and haven't put the new ones up yet. Though I am not putting any towel rods on the wall shown.

I fully admit this might be a silly idea that really won't look good or work in the space. But the idea has just been there, nagging me, for about 6 months as I've been deciding what to do with that room.

I agree that the shower door looks fine. I mean, all shower doors are pretty boring, aren't they?

You can easily hang a regular rod inside the shower stall, just immediately above the door, and it would work just fine (hope I described that right).

But, I'm not sure I'd hang fabric over the door. That works when you have a larger tub, but the narrow profile of the shower might look odd with a curtain in front. there just isn't much room horizontally, you know?

I like the idea of either some artwork or shelves to the left of the shower, with guest towels underneath. Don't kill me, but there is also the option of painting that wall another color, so it is different from the others.

I know it makes your decorating difficult, but I really like the slanted ceiling in this room. Gives it some visual interest vs just being a box.

Why not take a tension spring rod. put the curtain on it install it up to the top of the opening and swag it toward the wall. My sister did this with her bathroom and it looked really nice and really warmed up the bathroom.

That is exactly what I was going to recommend!

I would mount a spring rod as suggested and put a valence on it rather than a full length curtain. You'll get your splash of color without having to deal with the curtain.

Thanks for posting the pics, Christy. This is sort of what I was picturing before. I understand what you're wanting to do - but I'm just not feeling it as the space looks so small. Is that the toilet just to the left? Between towels, shelves and a curtain - there'll be a lot going on.

But if you are determined to give this a try - how about a series of decorative hooks screwed into the slope that the curtain attaches to by way of button holes or fabric/ribbon ties. The hooks would have to have enough of a curve to hold the fabric. Large eyehooks would also work. These could be painted to blend into the wall color, or to match your other hardware.

Keep in mind that the higher the mount, the less length of curtain you have to swoop back to the side if you go w/ something store bought.

The toilet is to the left of the picture. I have 18 inches between the corner and the toilet. So no, not a lot of space. I do have a very small corner shelving unit that would fit perfectly in the space.

The individual hooks are an excellent idea. Hrm, wonder if I could find some that would work.

I do have some old sheers in the garage. I'm thinking of taping them up there to see how it looks. That may nix this entire thing immediately if it looks bad.
