That gives us about 21 days to get ready for Julia Childs 100th Birthday. I thought it would be nice if we all made one of her recipes. IF you do not wish to do that you may sub with your favorite chef.

You also have 21 days to tell me that you don't want to start the game on Wed.
Oh, yay, oh, yippee-yi-yay, the game returns! Yay, yay, yay! (I'm mildly pleased, as you can tell.) I think I'll start a countdown calendar....

Wednesday is fine with me, but then again, any day would be fine with me.

Only trouble is ... I never liked Julia Child's style of cooking, although she was fun to watch on TV. My mother used to say that Julia Child reminded her of a drunken Girl Scout leader. But no matter; now I have a couple of weeks to decide which of my favorite chefs to use instead. Yippee-yi-ay-ky-ay!

One question: Does the recipe have to be "one you never made before," as in the other games?

    Cheers,
    Phoebe

Hi Phoebe, I'm sorry you are not to thrilled to see the game come back

No, this one is a free for all. Just as long as we say Happy Birthday to her. Yes, she was fun to watch. Do you remember that show back in 1979 where she prepared this huge Monkfish? All she used was the tail, weighing about 5 lbs. I have that on tape. The rest of the tapes I have are recipes made by guests (they don't count). This should be an interesting game.

    New game?!

Can't wait! Maybe it'll get me off my lazy butt and do some cooking! Also, Wednesdays are fine with me

Wednesdays are excellent for me, as that's shopping day... as long as you give me a heads-up on Tuesday, which is when I plan meals! Thank you very much, Cookieee!

That said, I probably can't play that week, because we're having company, and each is responsible for a dinner! This is a new thing for this group -- some friends we've had since they were teens, and we were in our 30's! I can't believe they still want to come hang out with the old fogeys! But I'm glad they do -- I look forward to this all year!

I may be able to do an appetizer or dessert, though... I'll look and see.

Hi Kay, I forgot, Wed is your busy day. I only made it Wed because that is Julia's birthday. I guess I could start the previous Thurdsay. Let me think about it. Still open for suggestions, not only the start day, but what do you all want to do after the birthday for the rest of the games?

While any start day is fine with me, I'm liking the Wednesday idea. I'm off on Thursdays so if the game was posted on Wed., I'd have that evening to plan out some kitchen adventures for the following day.

Also, I had a blast working our way through the alphabet!

Does that mean you want to go back to using the alphabet?

Wednesday is better than Thursday for me, Cookieee -- especially if we're going to do the alphabet again! I really liked that, except for the days I went backwards in the alphabet! Let's do that again!

OK Wed it is, unless more people vote for another day. And it looks like you all want the alphabet game back.

This went over really well with the kids but not the husband. My youngest even asked me if she could have these with her lunch the next day. Huge hit!!! I did find that they went from done to over-done really quickly. The darker ones weren't as good so I really need to watch them closer next time.

How is everybody doing? I haven't picked out my recipe for the birthday girl yet. Have you? I know it won't be monkfish
Since DH will probably be doing the cooking, I guess I should let him pick it out

    Heads up!!!!!!!!

Two weeks till Julia's birthday. Have you found your recipe? I have a few possibilities.

Heads up for the next game!!!!!!!

In 3 weeks we will resume our game. It seems everyone wants to resume the Alphabet game, so we will. We will still go in alphabetical order so everyone will have a heads up on what we are doing. So, starting August 22, we will start with A. The categories are...........EVERYTHING. If it has to do with food, it counts. But, it still has to be new to you OK?

It is, but like I said, we're having company that week, and I won't be able to play... they'll be here the Thursday to Tuesday. I'll start after that -- summer will effectively be over, so cooking will be back on the menu... so to speak!

Category #2 Make something you never had before. I thought I have had pancetta, maybe many years ago, but tonight, oh my, so delicious. And my first time for Ricotta Salata. Everything was just so good. And the cantelope was so very cold and refreshing. Please try this. I know you will like it.

Pasta Salad with Melon, Pancetta, and Ricotta Salata

Like the classic combination of melon and prosciutto? Then you’ll love this main-course pasta salad.
    4 servings

2 ounces thinly sliced pancetta (Italian bacon)
    4 ounces orecchiette (ear-shaped pasta)
    Kosher salt
    3 1/2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil
2 1/2 tablespoons Champagne vinegar or white wine vinegar
2 cups 1x1x1/4" pieces peeled melon (any variety)
1/3 cup coarsely chopped fresh mint, divided
    3 tablespoons thinly sliced scallion
Pinch of crushed red pepper flakes
    Freshly ground black pepper
1 ounce ricotta salata (salted dry ricotta), shaved, or crumbled feta

Heat oven to 350°. Arrange pancetta in a single layer on a large rimmed baking sheet. Bake until brown and crisp, 20–25 minutes. (Alternatively, place pancetta on folded layers of paper towels on a microwave-proof plate and microwave on high until brown and crisp, about 5 minutes.) Let pancetta stand until cool enough to handle, then break into bite-size pieces.
Meanwhile, cook pasta in a medium pot of boiling salted water, stirring occasionally, until al dente. Drain pasta; run under cold water to cool. Drain and set aside.
Whisk oil and vinegar in a large bowl. Add half of pancetta, cooked pasta, melon, half of mint, scallion, and red pepper flakes. Toss to coat. Season to taste with salt and pepper. Transfer to a serving dish and sprinkle remaining pancetta and mint over. Garnish with shaved ricotta salata.

    Source: Bon Appetit -August 2012

DH had them slice the pancetta fairly thick. Cooked it in the oven. I don't know if I can go back to regular bacon. Used White Wine vinegar. We both gave it a Very Good rating.
