Vicci, nice going on the run and ride, and I'm glad you are continuing to enjoy the local eats! Local delicacies are one of the biggest reasons to vacation, as you know

The thumbs-up means you were rockin'! She was commending you on your fortitude Definitely take it as a compliment.

Thanks Nat for clarifying. I didn't think that I looked that bad, but I was on a longer-than-usual run.

Today's last vacation meal will be fish tacos! First, if the rain continues to hold off fr another half hour or so, a last oceanside run. *sigh sigh sigh*

What's everyone up to for the weekend?

Thanks to everyone for the words of encouragement.

Vicci- Hope the last day of your vacation is wonderful. Congrats on getting in another 5+ run. And I agree that the women were just giving you encouragement.

Les- Sorry to hear that the TM is your only option right now, I am sure you are ready for some fall weather.

Nat- Isn't funny how your own kids can make you look at things so differently.

Well yesterday we hit the pool in the evening and I had a chance to do both some deep water running and I did some actual running in the pool in about four feet of water. All in all I did about thirty minutes, so that was great and it was a great way to beat the heat. Tonight I have to hit the track again for a quick run. On our schedule is the Olympics, I can't wait, I love to watch the games, and maybe a trip to the zoo on Sunday as they have lots of new baby animals on display.
    Have a great weekend.

Heather, the pool running sounds like a good way to ease back into it (less impact, etc.). Hope that your quick run this evening is successful. And what kind of baby animals? DH and I are partial to any in the "cat" family...

Well, this morning it rained. Not unexpected, but I very much missed going for a last run (although, to be honest, I did think that yesterday's would be my last oceanside-run because of the weather forecast. I had just hoped that the forecast would be *gasp!* wrong). So I did a long yoga while gazing at the cove. Not too bad...

The fish tacos were awesome and we walked around and said our goodbyes to some of the shopkeepers and artists we have befriended in our past visits, then returned to the cottage to pack. The car is now all loaded and ready for our departure at 10. If only I were!

    See you all next week!

Heather - Yep, I'm ready for fall weather (maybe even winter weather). I'm glad you're still able to run in the pool. I'm a huge fan of the National Zoo - I hope you find a bunch of neat little ones there tomorrow.
Vicci - Have you ever had fish tacos from Southern California? Those are the best I've ever had - the little shacks on the beach with freshly caught fish. I wish you had the opportunity to run today but I understand...

The biggest thing of today was 18 miles this morning. It wasn't "too" bad. Only 75 when we started at 5 am. I need a nap. Maybe more later this afternoon.

    Happy trails,
    Les

Heather, that's great that were able to do such a good deep water workout. How was yesterday's run? Enjoy the zoo tomorrow. Baby animals... what could be cuter?

Vicci, hope your trip home was uneventful and that you're pleased to be home with all the amenities, even if you miss the coast. Yoga with a view sounds like a perfect Plan B since you couldn't run.

Les, 18 miles starting at 5 AM - great job!! You've definitely earned a nap.

Today I did about 40 minutes (mostly intervals of different types) on the bike, followed by lunges and squats with a smiling and willing free weight Also enjoyed a nice walk. My mom came over last night and stayed the day with me (DH was out). We had a really nice time relaxing with J and the pup. For some of the day we had the Olympics on in the background.

    Back-to-backs.

Robyn, looking forward to seeing the photos when you get a chance!

I ran 10 miles today. I'd looked at the calendar last week and knew I really needed to shoot for this this week. It wasn't easy but it's in the bank and was pretty good on the whole. 10 miles is always a kind of milestone in my training so it's nice to have completed it. That being said I think I'll opt out of tonight's dance class.

How is everyone else doing this fine weekend? Did anyone watch the men's or women's cycling race or any of the swimming (or anything else interesting)? Yes on all three counts here, but I won't post anything re: results on this thread

Les although I have read about the ultra-fresh fish tacos, I've never been to southern CA and have never experienced them. But I do make my own with fresh-from-the-store tilapia or whatever.!
    18 miles.* At 5am. I salute you.

Nat, I wonder if Spooky would mind my using him as a free weight... It must be fun to get such an immediate positive response.
Good job on the 10 miles*, it's always good to get to a goal.

*- and, my little VRB friends, this is why I have been hesitant to commit to meeting at a VRB event. I guess that I could always refill your water bottles, or something...

We had a lovely (NOT!) 9-1/2 hour trip back yesterday, and will be at my parents' until tomorrow morning. It's nice to ease back into "real life". And to cook, w/ Mom, on a gas stove with a varied assortment of tools and equipment.

Although I didn't feel like it, I did get in 4 miles this morning. I enjoy running when we visit as there are some nice, not busy, roads. But, even though it was 63 degrees when I left at 8am, the humidity was over 95% and it was sticky!

We're off to a picnic in an hour or so, my nephew's moving to NC and my sister is having a send-off. *sigh* He was a chubby-kneed little guy only a couple of years ago!

Nice job easing back into society and stopping at your mom's place.

Suffice to say that * happens when we're in training. I seem to remember that our original event had at least one who didn't run regularly (not that they were untrained but they weren't a seasoned veteran) and that we chose an event that had 5k, 10k, half- and full marathon included. Besides, each one of us has run our first official race at some point in time in our lives.

Well said! Vicci, we don't care if you (or anyone else who chooses to attend such a get-together) runs, walks, crawls, or just has cookies ready at the finish line When we met in Cincinnati we spent a whole weekend doing mostly non-running stuff (eating, visiting a huge grocery store, getting to know one another) and that was the best thing about the weekend.

And welcome back to life with a stove!

Vicci-Sorry the trip home was so bad, I am sure that makes ending a vacation that much less fun. Hope things are good at home, are all your renovations done?

Les- Wow 18, thats impressive, are you training for anything?

Nat- Glad to hear you made your goal and that Mr J is being a willing participant. We are enjoying the Olympics here, my older DS is really into it. We like the swimming and beach volleyball, although we will pretty much watch whatever is on, since we were watching the crew yesterday.

Well I spoke too soon about the leg. On the second lap the pain was back. I go back to the doctor tomorrow, so we will see. I am sure it will just be more waiting as I could walk for four hours yesterday without a problem, but the pounding just isn't working right now.
We had a blast at the zoo. We saw the new 3 month old cheetah cubs and they were so playful. We went early and many of the animals were out and active since it wasn't too hot yet.
Hope everyone has a good week.

Yes Heather, I'm training for the Richmond Marathon in November (the day before Cheryl's marathon in the Outer Banks). A favorite marathon because it happens on Saturday and is nearby my house.

Back-to-back. Got my run in in not too bad conditions. It was warm and a little bit humid but nothing terrible (don't ask). I picked up 10k out and back.

I'll shoot for a July close out tomorrow.

I had a neat visitor today at church. There was a gentleman from Guernsey Island and a lady who has done a lot of research into one of the 18th-19th century families from the area named Corbell. It was neat to chat with them and fill in some of my gaps in the history of the Parish.

Hope everyone else had a good Monday... happy trails,

Heather, glad you enjoyed the zoo. Sorry about the leg though. Please let us know how the doctor's appointment went and what the next steps are (no pun intended).

Les, nice job on the 10k in yet more H&H.

Vicci, how was the picnic and your trip back to your own place?

Took it easy yesterday - 2 walks and lots of stretching. Today I did a very short spin, some weights, and the mom'n'baby dance class. It just started to rain for the first time in ages - real steady rain, almost a downpour. Just hoping there's no thunder to wake up the little one.

Got the Olympics on and am enjoying a very close tennis match. Haven't watched tennis in, oh, forever, but it was something my dad, sister and I used to do a lot when I was growing up. I played quite a bit too at that time but was never any good!

Take care, all, and see you on the new thread!

Well, it figures. I just got logged on (oh, how I miss the wifi at the vacation cottage!) and I hear thunder in the distance. Need to get outside and finish my garden work. With any luck, the rain will cut it short and I'll not be too tired to post this evening!

But just in case I am... 3 miles this morning in incredible humidity and 12"+ long grass-- it was difficult! DH is mowing now, hope the storms veer away...
