Virtual Running Buddies - September 2012

Well, I guess I'll start... I can claim a 10 mile run this morning. But I should give some more details on the thread.

Vicci has had a couple blech runs recently. The first she thought was attributed to staying up late but the most recent might be the sign of something else putting her in a funk.
Heather is getting better and strengthening her leg.
Cheryl ran this morning (I'm poaching from a different locale) and I'll let her say more.
Nat is recovering and has been away for a little bit.

We're looking at Labor Day on Monday and I bet I'll sleep in.

This morning we ran near the Mariner's Museum in Newport News. I knew that had a lot of rain this past week but I didn't realize just how much. When we had 3+ at the house they had a whopping 10+ inches. The rain was so heavy it actually lifted a 12 foot bridge and moved it about 30 feet. That was the second big rain - one of which actually left 12' of water under a train overpass. Oy! We really don't need that much more rain around here for a while.

Anyone have anything big planned for Labor Day? I may get the chance to "see" my godson and his mother via the blessing of Skype.

    Happy trails,
    Les

Les, thanks for starting off the September thread!

Nice job on the 10 miler. Hadn't realized there was so much rain down there. Guess someone had to get all the rain we didn't get this summer (not complaining!).

Hope too that we get to Skype on Labour Day Your godson is much bigger and more entertaining than the last time you saw him! Hope he cooperates on camera

We are barbecuing today with a friend and I have no idea what to make. Had tons of ideas from perusing a cookbook this week but now feel pretty lazy about executing them

I've been running and spinning quite regularly and today ran 9 miles The friend with whom I plan to do a half marathon this fall clocks her runs in miles because she reads Runner's World. So I told her I'd do 9 miles today Most Canadians calculate their runs in kms, of course.

Hi to Vicci, Cheryl (back to school now and getting into the thick of marathon training?), MinEaston, Heather (how's the recovery coming along), Susan, and everyone else!

Have a wonderful long weekend, everyone!!!

Les, I also hadn't realized how much rain the central Atlantic coast had been getting lately. Yep, if it's so much that it moves a bridge, then it certainly is enough! Good 10 miler-- what, you're taking it easy?

Nat, so what did you decide to make for the barbeque? Good to hear that you've been spinning and running (in addition to the running after Mr. J.-- is he crawling yet?) I've always thought that kilometer runs sound more impressive than those equal runs done in just plain ol' miles. 15 kilometers sounds better than 9 miles! I think I'll start reporting my runs in that way...

Alas, won't be running for a bit. First, the second "bleh" run was caused mostly because I went out in my gardening shoes (which are very similar to my running shoes, in fact they are my old running shoes).

But unfortunately on Saturday I woke with that familiar tingling in my neck/shoulder and down my arm. Yep, that herniated disc is acting up again. Totally bad timing as we are going to Delaware for 2 weeks on Saturday. So I cancelled weekend plans and have been stretching and icing every couple of hours. Fingers crossed, it seems to be working and I think that the area has even improved a bit. Certainly hasn't gotten worse.

But I doubt as I will run in the next couple of days, since the jarring motion would not be good for my recovery. I'm also going to lay off the upper body weights for a few days, but continue yoga. We'll see...

Any special Labor Day menus on tap? We're having goat-cheese stuffed turkey burgers and chipotle black-eyed peas for our little barbeque-for-two.

We've been inundated this year with rain. There have been more than a few days that had more than 3 inches of rain - and for the most part we could use a break. This summer has seen rain more days than not each week. I need to rest once in a while don't I?

The wrong shoes would make a difference. I actually mark my old shoes (since I rerun shoes) with an X to signify when the shoes are dead. I hope that your disc doesn't get bad again. Enjoy Delaware this weekend too. We don't have anything planned except a vid call...

I went for a run this morning before the rain started. Still pretty yucky - ~78 when we started with lots of humidity (rained overnight too). I ended up with just under 15 km (for you Nat) - I was running with a different group and the girl I was running with wanted to push me a little bit - so I pushed back. Not terrible but I think a little more than she expected.

    Happy trails,
    Les

Vicci, oh nooo... sorry about the pain. Running in old shoes can be such a bad thing. Hope you manage to enjoy DE anyway! Will you be at the beach?

Yes, J is crawling, at least sorta kinda. He gets around on all fours and is much better at keeping his chest up. He's not at all quick yet but I expect that that's coming soon! Very neat to see him exploring everything. Keeps me on my toes! He also likes to pull himself to standing and LOVES to bounce.

Les, great to see you and LW on the vid call today. Good job on the 9 miles, er, 15k I would have pushed back a bit too as well if challenged on a run like that. Type A? We're not Type A!!

Today I did a fairly tough spin (cycling remains harder for me than running) and went for a lovely walk. We had a great Labour Day in general. DH went for a ride and ran into a few people from the run club, so they stopped by to see J. Then we went out for coffee on a patio and just relaxed for a while. Barbecue for dinner again (for yesterday's barbecue we went super casual and just did sausages and potato salad and our friend did more potatoes and roasted veg). All was delicious. Vicci, your spread sounds far more gourmet and very tempting!

Kind of nutty-looking week here: taking the car in for service tomorrow (boo!), frozen yogurt with the moms on Wed., possibly a movie on Thurs., possibly modelling in a fashion show (eek!) on Friday, and going to the pro cycling race on the weekend!!!

Hope everyone has a wonderful week ahead!

    Happy September all

Les- I hear you on all the rain. Our garden is actually suffering from too much rain and ooh the bugs are getting so bad because of it. Great job on the run and how fun you got to skype with Natasha and Mr J

Vicci- Sorry to hear about the back, I hope it recovers in time for you to enjoy your vacation.

Nat- Beware, not a good crawler means an early walker My older DS never really got good at crawling so he just started walking at 10 months. Those BBQs sound great and I am glad to hear the runs/spins are going well.

Well the PT pressed on my shin today and while nowhere near as bad it is still tender so I don't think we are all the way there yet. I am up to 25 minutes on the elliptical with no issues so that is good, and I go back to the ortho next week so I have to try and run again this weekend.

We were in LA over the weekend for my grandfathers 90th birthday. It was very nice, but getting back into everything this week including school and baseball may be a little rough. Hope the week goes by quickly.

    Happy Tuesday.

Heather, we actually thought J would be one of those to skip crawling altogether so I was surprised to see him doing it. He usually does the style though that is supposedly a precursor to walking - he gets his back end up high. We'll see. I'm not in a huge rush for him to get more mobile TOO quickly The current rate works for me!

Welcome back from LA. You and your family have some fun travels! Good luck with your run this weekend and with getting back into the swing of things. Thanks for the injury update. Fingers crossed for your run.

Got in a short run and short power walk today and then a longer ride. Had to be split up due to J's nap schedule, but that's fine No walk today as it was pouring (though now it's passed).

Hi to everyone else! Have a nice evening.

Weird day today - took LW to a doctor's appointment (no big issues but it took some time this morning). We even had (wait for it) rain this afternoon - walked out from my office to feed the critters and it was pouring. Then the sun came out and (wait for it) the humidity set it.

I was lucky enough to have decent conditions to ride 11 miles before the sun set.

Weird part is the ache in my ankles - not like a sprain or an overuse injury but right at the top of my foot where it connects to my shin. In ~30 years of running this is a first. It's feeling better but still unnerving.

    To bed... happy trails,
    Les

Les, that's exactly where my ankles have been aching/ feeling weird. Especially at night. I'm often flexing my feet to try to alleviate it (which does work, somewhat). It was really bothering me about 2 weeks ago, though. So what do you think, a very delayed reaction from going up and down the circular stairs at the lake house over the 4th?
Rain, rain, humidity, rain-- is this typical for your area? We've had some rain lately, but very little for the month of August. Alas, the humidity remains high...
Good 11 mile ride between storms, though!

ps- thanks for the tip-- I've made an "x" on the toes of my gardening-formerly running-shoes. I hope to buy a different color nest time!

Nat oh my, Mr J walking-- talk about an aerobic workout for you! Hope that it doesn't develop for a while yet... And very cool how you manage to work in your exercise sessions around the sleep schedule (lesser Moms would take naps!!!)
So what type of apparel might you be modeling tomorrow? And have you done this before?

Heather, I was wondering how your leg was feeling. It's been a slow recovery, hasn't it? But hopefully it will be complete soon. Good luck on your run this weekend (the elliptical work is probably doing lots to help you keep your strength).
A trip back from LA, then straight into school and baseball? Wow.

I've done little this week other than stretching and icing my neck. A little yoga (those poses which don't require pressure on that area, so no downward dogs!) and I started light weights this morning to begin to build up the area a bit. No tingling sensations down my arm this time, so I think that I caught the episode at the beginning. Heavens, that foam collar is stifling!

Yes, Nat, we are going to the beach... We're actually looking at this area to retire in, but I think that Rockport (MA) is going to be some tough competition.

    Not really cookingchef.

I hope you're feeling a little better with your rest Vicci. It is pretty icky to have aches that you can't put a finger on.

Short post for now - claiming 24+ miles this morning. It was "nice" this morning, only 77 when we started at 5 am. And humidity to top everything off.

Off to look at sectionals - spending money like I had it.

    Back-to-back...

My feet and legs are feeling pretty good today. Of course, about 15 aspirin between Saturday and today don't hurt either.

I had a late meeting today but took some "comp" time and went to work late so I could get 5.5 miles in before breakfast and then go to work. Nice run and (wait for it) it wasn't wet and it was 62 degrees out. I almost shivered in the process.

Setting up exercises then probably to bed soon. Hope everyone is well... Happy Trails,

    Greetings from the Delaware shore!

Les, 62 degrees must have felt like winter after what you have been used to! And no rain, either-- you probably felt as though you skipped forward in time a bit. So how do your legs and ankles feel today after yesterday's run?

Well, I hadn't run in 1-1/2 weeks due to that neck problem, but it has begun to feel better (I wore the foam collar during the entire drive down, which probably helped a lot), so I went for a run this morning. Only about 3 miles, and I forgot to run into the wind first, then after turning around the return feels easier. So, I ran with the wind, then turned around and struggled back (it was a very brisk wind-- walking fast took enough effort that my HRM registered what it does during the start out of a run on my trails at home!).

There are a bunch of outlet shops down here, so I may take a look for some new kicks at some point. I saw a New Balance store down the road.

I'll check in again soon, hopefully someone else will chime in to prevent Les from back-to-back-to-back....

I'll check in only to welcome VictoriaL to my side of the Chesapeake. You picked a great week to visit, weather-wise. Which beach?

I promise I'll check in more soon, when life settles down. I have been lurking. And doing my sailing exercises.

MinEaston, I thought of you as we crossed that loooooong Bay Bridge and I saw the sailboats below. We are staying in the southern end of Dewey Beach and, you're right, the weather is absolutely gorgeous!

I forgot to mention that, years ago when we stayed north of here, the beaches were long and nicely flat to run on. Not only because of the wind, it was even more difficult this morning because the sand is mounded up into little rises all along the water line so it's like running up little mini-hills over and over... quite the workout!

Which is why I had a treat at lunch today. I love desserts, but limit them to just a few per month. Well, when I saw
White Chocolate Chicory Stout Bread Pudding
Drowning in a Brown Honey Rum Chocolate Sauce

on the menu, I realized that this was why I had such a good workout!

Needless to say, I plan to run again tomorrow (and the dessert was awesome!).

You don't know how great 62 felt on Monday - or 58 felt when I went to work this morning. I am definitely ready for fall weather.

I'm glad you are feeling better and I hope your run went well yesterday. I think a little rest was good for your body and spirit.

It's good seeing you again MinEaston. I'm glad you've had a good summer sailing. Hopefully we can see you more.

My ankle and feet are feeling better and I'm starting to develop a better picture of what's going on. Most of my issue appears to be weak ankles - I haven't done ankle work in the gym in a long time. Not sure I can get the issue taken care of before the marathon in November.

I picked up a 4 1/4 mile run after work this evening. Kind of limited in the time I could run. Pushed the pace a bit and felt good.

    Happy trails,
    Les

Les- I hear you on the fall weather, it feels glorious to sleep with our windows open at night and have no humidity to deal with. Sorry to hear the ankles are giving you problems, I know I do work on my ankles with bands at night at home, maybe that would help.

Vicci- Welcome to this neck of the woods, I am sure it is beautiful at the beach this weekend and so much more peaceful. Is that the area where you are hoping to retire? DH and I ran on the beach there last summer, it is no easy feat. We also run on route 1 with no problem usually.

MinEaston- Hope the summer was wonderful and the school year is off to a good start. Are both kids in school yet?

Well Monday night we hit the track and I was able to do 5 non continuous minutes without pain. And I saw the orthopedist yesterday and he finally saw bone growth on the shin and the "dreaded black line" which was the non healing union seemed to be disappearing. So that is all great news.
Now the slow part begins of rebuilding. I can try 5 minutes every third day, then every other day and then add 10% a week after that, with no racing at all for 6 months. So it will be the Color Walk for me this weekend and then that is it.
I have 6 more weeks of physical therapy on the books and am up to 25 minutes on the elliptical (when I hit 30 minutes, I can start adding in some resistance)
So on my way down a long road, but at least right now I am bypassing the fork with surgery and bone grafting

    Happy Thursday everyone.

Hi everyone! Long time no talk.

Vicci, that dessert sounds most intriguing. Glad you have been enjoying the DE shore!

Les, I'm sure that fall weather feels soooo good. Crisp mornings and evenings here too. Feels weird after months of (blessed) heat! Love fall in general but love summer too.

MinEaston, nice to see you and hear that you are still doing lots of sailing!

Heather, fantastic news about the 5 minutes continuous!!! You are on the right road as you say. Please let us know how things progress.

Cheryl, welcome back and happy OBX training. Good job on the half marathon progress! So nice to see improvement, as you say.

    Quick catch-up here...

Didn't end up modelling (it was at a shopping mall) as the mall ended up providing their own model instead of having a few of us moms do it. Oh well

Bike race in Montreal: super fun as it was last year. It was Mr. J's introduction to live pro bike racing Got some cool photos and had neat conversations in Spanish, French and (of course) English. Some of the riders (esp. some of the Spanish guys) thought Mr. J was pretty cute which made me smile.

Training: going along though last week was pretty slack. Just did 10 miles today, fortunately. Tough at times but I stuck it through.

Otherwise things are just so busy now that Mr. J is mobile. Surfing time is limited Also J's programs started again so we have a lot going on ... social stuff, programs, tidying up the house... We went to a harvest dinner last night with law school buddies. This one guy always goes all out and makes a huge gourmet spread. It was delicious. I made a chocolate cheesecake with Mr. J and that was an experience. Dog underfoot, amusing baby, baking... a true three-ring circus The cake turned out well though and was well received, and we did have fun baking once I resigned myself to the kitchen temporarily being a big mess.

    Have a great day!

I bet Mr. J is becoming a little bit of a bundle of energy and hard to handle from time to time - considering the pictures from the bike event and Skype a couple weeks ago. I bet it was a lot of fun with Cabot and the wee one underfoot baking a cheesecake and I bet your cheesecake was divine. Good for you to stick out your run and make 10 miles.

It was a quiet weekend around here - I didn't get my 10 miler in this weekend as I had a planning meeting for a retreat in the first weekend of October. But I think I needed the break though. I was able to see my CMT (not my regular one but a good one) yesterday and I feel a lot better. I've got a long road with my ankle - it's gotten weak and I need to start working it more.

I picked up a neat run this evening. It was funny though, I wanted to add about 1/4 mile or so to an old run so I thought I'd run down a block and the return to the route but ended up running into a dead end so had to back track and added about 3/4 miles. Ended up with 5.75 miles finishing in the drizzle - nice run.

'Bout all that's fit to print. Hope everyone is well... happy trails,
    Les

    Hi everyone!

Les have you mapped out a rigorous program to strengthen your ankles before November?
My Mom and I were bemoaning the fact that there are so many areas to concentrate efforts on when you're trying to keep everything in good working order. There's the obvious-- weights and cardio. Then flexibility and when you factor in all of those various areas-- back, neck, shoulders, hips, knees, ankles, etc., well, a person needs 2 hours a day to get it all in!
Good work on the "short" run, even though you ran into a dead end and drizzle (although I think that you didn't mind the latter at all!).

Heather wahoo on bypassing surgery and bone grafts!!! What a schedule you have mapped out for your recovery, but you can shoot for resuming your regular (pre-shin problem) schedule in the spring, right? A goal to work for?!

Cheryl summer didn't last as long as you wanted?! My sister, also a teacher, thinks the same. Great news about the half-marathons, especially with improvement in the last one. You'll be more than set for November.

Nat, how fun to have introduced Mr J to the biking pros! He'll be racing and running before he walks, I'll bet. And good to get that 10 miles accomplished, with the time you have available. Must get that cheesecake worked off, right?!

The condo we are staying in doesn't have internet access, so I have to check e-mail from the "community room". It was rough for the first few days, but now I'm enjoying being even more "disconnected" than I am usually!

Several beach runs have been logged in. Once I accidentally ended up in the midst of a sprint triathlon ("No! Don't cheer for me! I'm doing a measly 4 mile run!!!"), and this morning I had to abandon the beach and finish it on the road due to high winds (a free beach-sand exfoliation of my arms and legs was not really enjoyed...). My parents visited for a few days and Mom & I took several very long beach walks.

And yes, Heather, this is where we hope to retire. DH had wanted to look further into the coast of northern MA, but I am pushing this area for the milder winters. DH and I have looked at several properties with a realtor and are looking at 3 more tomorrow. It's been somewhat of a surprise, since I really didn't think that we were going to actually do this for a couple of more years, but if something comes up we're going to rethink our schedule. I'm having a bit of trouble thinking of selling the farm and/ or lake house, though! In my mind, the farm isn't even "finished" yet...

Hey, what is it about being at the beach that makes me crave ice cream??? I buy one or two half-gallons a year but get me on vacation and... My Reason for Running!

I wish I had a good plan mapped out. I'm off to get some bands (unless I can find the old ones from previous injuries) to do strengthening exercises.

I'm never going to complain about a little drizzle - in fact that is always a blessing.

I'm glad you had a good trip and even got some good runs in on the beach. I'd say more about a run today but tornado warnings are terrible.

Tomorrow... a run is in the offing.

    Happy trails,

Vicci, how exciting that you are already looking at places!! I'm with you - vacations at the beach (or lake houses, or cottages of any sort) call for ice cream for some reason. How nice that your parents were able to join you for a bit. Hilarious about getting caught in the middle of a sprint tri

Les, glad your ankle is feeling better. Bands and lots of your favourite "alphabeting" sound like they should help. Hope the tornado warning has passed.

Got in a good run yesterday morning but didn't do anything today (well, except for my usual walk). What a glorious day - it seemed like the sky was especially blue and the grass unusually green. I hope to run again tomorrow.

Thought I had more to report but it doesn't come to mind now so I will stop procrastinating and start filing papers I do NOT like filing!

Hey Nat - I'm glad it looks like you're back on step with your running. I can't believe that you have problems getting runs in. It's not like you have anything that might distract you. I'm not a fan of filing either but it's often a necessary evil. Luckily the tornado watch passed without an issue last night but the rain on the other hand... a whole different story and the straight line winds were oppressive.

Today was a lot nicer and I got a little more done - even discounting the 90 minutes on the phone trying to get Verizon to get one of our email accounts at work working again. I even had a chance to get out and visit with "my" guinea fowl. It's odd that I really missed them on Monday when I ended up working from home.

I got a nice run this evening. It was 64 degrees and a little overcast. Nice to get a 10+ km run in. It felt pretty good and fluid. I'm looking forward to the half marathon this weekend.

A shout out to the rest of the gang... happy trails,
    Les

Les, that's good that the tornado warning and nutty rains passed and you were able to enjoy a 10k+ run in the crisper weather.

Remembered what I'd wanted to mention last night: I heard yesterday that a pro cyclist (from the Euskaltel team) was hit by a vehicle in a training ride and died Doesn't matter how experienced a rider you are ... riding on the road can be dangerous. So sad.

Planning to get in my run midday. This is the time I usually train but I need to get ready to go out soon, so hope to run later!

    Good morning all
Les- I hear you about the wild weather, Tuesday was nuts. We avoided the tornado warnings but the wind and rain were enough. Glad to hear the weather cooperated for a run yesterday. Were you able to get the bands for your ankles?

Nat- I think any sport has its dangers but put it on the road with drivers and it just gets so much more so. So great that you are still finding time to get your runs in with Mr J being mobile. Life changes so fast when they can move.

Cheryl- Glad to hear the hip pain has cleared up and you are doing well with your training. I am sure it felt great to have improved in your last race. Hope the beginning of school is off to a good start.

Vicci- How exciting to be looking at property for retirement and I am sure there are some good deals to be had right now. Ice cream and any vacation seem to go together. Hope the runs continue and you enjoy the rest of your vacation.

Well Saturday we did the Color Run. We had a blast. I have to say if anyone ever wants to do a non pressure race with 10,000 other happy people this is the run to do. I started off the race with my 5 minute run and the leg felt fine and then we walked the rest, which was fine since you really wanted to go slow through the color zones to get coated in the most color. By the end we were all giant rainbows with big smiles on our face. The clean up took a while but it was worth a great morning of fun exercise with the family.
Sunday night was the beginning of Rosh Hashanah, our New Year so it was lots of cooking, celebrating with friends and time in temple. The only bad part was I usually wear heals when I get dressed up and they really bothered my leg, so I felt some discomfort until yesterday. No more heals for a while.

But yesterday I was able to hit the track and do another five minutes with no pain and this morning was PT. So fingers crossed we are moving ahead. Tomorrow is a rest day with another run on Saturday and then next week I can try every other day instead of every third. Here's hoping.

    Hope everyone else is well.

    Hi Heather,

Thanks for the update. Sounds like all is progressing apace (I'm knocking on wood). Sorry though about the heels. Hope you have a good Rosh Hashanah.

The Color Run sounds like so much fun, especially with your whole family. Happy you still got to do it! I have to find photos of this race

Just got in about 7k on the treadmill. Felt really good which was nice to see as I haven't slept too well the last couple of nights (thanks J! ) and had very briefly considered napping instead of running, even though I rarely nap. But the run won out and I'm glad it did.

    Have a great afternoon, all!

    Hi all!

A quick note tonight (from the community room...) to say hi. I'm actually getting along quite well without internet in the condo, but this is our last night here so I have to get back to packing.

I got in a 3.5 mile run this morning before a meeting with a realtor. Running along the beach is just so beautiful, I will miss it!

We are very interested in a house here, so please keep your fingers crossed! If we can make the offer we want to, and it's accepted, I'll have a heck of a winter getting assorted projects in the farm completed so we can list it in the spring. I don't think that it will actually happen, but perhaps a miracle?!?!

I'll write more when we return home this weekend.

Vicci - Good luck on your offer for the house in Delaware. Whatever is supposed to happen will happen.

It is nice to run in the cooler temps Nat. I'm glad you are getting runs in and having fun with Mr. J.

Quick check in I'm getting ready for a half-marathon in the morning but not sure I'm ready for my half in the morning. I am well trained (I think) and I wanted to use it as a predictor for the November marathon. Then, for some odd reason Wednesday into Thursday I ended up with tightness in my hip and quad. It's better today but still a little achy. Still, looking forward to having a race of my own where I'm not coaching anyone or pacing them - just me and the clock. Wish me luck.

    See you after the race,
    Les

Vicci, good luck with the offer and have a safe drive home!

Les, good luck to you too and enjoy racing just against the clock for once. Hope the ankle behaves.

Just did a good spin and some weights. Looking at a walk this afternoon too.

Hope everyone else is doing well!
