Running and riding buddies for October 2012

Hey all, it's hard to believe that it's October already. It seems like I had just started the September thread. The last post from the September thread by Vicci:
Nice 12-miler, Nat! You've certainly returned to form in the last few months, haven't you? Like anyone expected that a little one could possibly slow you down...

Les, your Saturday (very) long run sounded good, even though you started in the dark. I just noticed last week how dark it is in the morning, and at 5am, well, is your group returning to a later start time this weekend?

As I reported the other day, I've been keeping up with only yoga and weights while trying to get the house in shape for the appraiser on Wednesday. It's not as though we live in a pig sty, but I've let the cleaning go a bit during the summer (can I use lack of a/c as a partial excuse?) so everything looks a little yucky. Especially those rooms which we don't use on a regular basis (like the guest room, which I refer to as the "dumping room").

ps- There was a color run near here a few weeks ago and a photo was in the paper of a woman finishing, covered in purple, yellow, and pink cornstarch. Alas, it probably washed off her shoes where Cheryl's will look colorful all of the time!
I'm looking forward to hearing the new things that come out of the Nat and Mr. J camp in the coming days.
I'm not sure what the group will be doing for a start time this weekend but I bet it will be 6 am at the earliest (they are "only" running 10 miles) but might start at 7 am. The next time we run 20+ (in 3 weeks, 2 10 milers between here and there) might start at 6 am - it's still too hot at 11 am to be running long miles.
I hope you get your dumping grounds cleaned out as much as you would like to.

Today was a decent day - our 29th Anniversary (I remembered, LW... not as well as I did). After coming home from work I was able to take a 4.25 mile run. nice but not speedy (for me). Still in the books.

I hope we have a talkative month this month. Happy trails all,
    Les

Happy belated anniversary, Les and LW! I'd wanted to send you a note on the day. 29 years - hard to believe!

Thanks for starting the new thread too. I like the title.

Starting at 7 and running "only" 10 miles will feel so decadent. I love those "step-down" weeks. They generally feel so easy compared to the long haul weeks.

Vicci, good luck with the cleaning! How are the yoga and weights going?

No workout yesterday, but we'll see how things go today.

Hi to Cheryl, Heather, MinEaston, Robyn, Carrie, and everyone else out there in runland/rideland!

Happy belated anniversary, Les and LW! We will also hit the 29-year mark in 2 months.

Les, thanks for starting out the month (and "officially" including the biking part of our runs!). A 6am start will probably seem late to you, now...

Nat you may say no workout yesterday, but I hardly think that you have been lazing around (especially with 9mo Mr. J i the mix!).

I'm anxious to start running again, it feels as though it has been a long time. After the appraiser leaves tomorrow, we are heading to the lake where we will spend what is forecast to be a warm fall day on Thursday in the boat with friends (nobody is on the lake in October, and it's wonderful, but no swimming and we definitely stay in the sun!). With luck, I will be running down there on Friday morning.

You're welcome Vicci about adding the biking to the thread. Thank you for your anniversary wishes too. I'm with Vicci, I bet you got a good workout yesterday with Mr. J running around. A 10 miler will be nice considering last week was a half marathon and the most recent weekend was 22.5.

Enjoy the lake Vicci and I bet the water is a little cool right now.

I ran this evening - a little different selection of roads and ended up with 5.5+ miles. It was yucky - muggy and warm. Almost 80 when I hit the road at 6:30. Where is fall now?

Bed calls, prep for the upcoming weekend retreat (Thursday - Sunday) as a spiritual director for 40 lay people (3 clergy for 40 lay). It is the first time I've done something like that so I'm a little bit on edge. I'll be okay but the unknown can be unnerving.

    Happy trails all,
    Les

    Hi All,

I lurked a bit on last month's thread so I sorta know what is going on with everyone We just moved and joined a group fitness class nearby. I am really enjoying it. We do a workout then some weight training. I am learning quite a bit about how to correctly lift weights, etc. I am planning on a run tomorrow or Friday. I'm currently only doing about 5k but am planning to sign up for the annual 10k Turkey Trot for Thanksgiving so I need to up my mileage at some point.

Vicci - "I'm anxious to start running again, it feels as though it has been a long time." Yes! Me too

Les - Happy Anniversary to you and LW! I'm hoping for a 7am run for you.. unless of course you want a 6am start.

Nat - So fun to hear about how Mr. J is doing! I'm impressed you can continue keep up your intense workout schedule

Hi to everyone else! And happy trails.

Carrie, nice to hear from you! Sounds like you're really enjoying the fitness class. Good luck with the Turkey Trot training. I'm sure it won't take you long to build up the mileage.

Vicci, enjoy your day on the boat today!

Les, I'm sure you will be a smashing success as a spiritual director. Please let us know how it went!

Finally got in a run today after THREE crazy days with no opportunity to train (though I did get in a long walk on Tuesday - it was absolutely spectacular out). Today I did 4.5 miles and wanted more which is what you want to feel when you're tapering, of course!

Hope everyone has a wonderful day!

Hi Les, hope all went well!

Hi to everyone else! What's up this weekend? It's our Thanksgiving weekend

I ran 10k this morning. I "sleptran" the first 3 minutes as I hadn't had a great night's sleep, but then I perked up considerably. I did slow down towards the end as I was feeling the effects again of lack of sleep, but all in all a good run. Threw in some hills too for the heck of it.

Hope everyone has a fabulous weekend!

Les, if anyone can deal with the unknown, especially if it involves getting along with people, you have nothing to worry about this weekend. Hope that it's going well!

Carrie, are you still in FL? I just love the idea of a fitness group, and learning how to lift the "right" way. You'll be up to 10k in no time-- how was the run on Friday?

A "sleeprun", Nat? I've done that! It sounds like you got in a good workout after perking up.

My time a the lake house was not as planned. I wanted to do a half-hour walk on Thursday since I hadn't run for almost 2 weeks, then a run on Friday. Well, DH pulled back the cover on the boat and discovered that, while we were away for the last month, mold had taken over (there was a leak in the boat cover). So I spent my allotted walking time cleaning instead. But I got in a nice run on Friday morning, although a mild case of shin splints developed later in the day (almost gone now).

Goodbye to summer! We got in two days on the boat, sat on a beach and toasted the end of summer, then had a cookout with friends last evening. Overnight a cold front came through, with rain, and the temps dropped 20 degrees. I don't think I've ever experienced a change in season so abruptly before!

    HAPPY THANKSGIVING to Nat!

    happy belated anniv les!! congratulations
    how did the retreat go?
and i like the biking addition- been riding a lot more this summer and thinking tri thoughts- picked out the obx tri in sept-

happy thanksgiving to nat and mr j! hearing you about the step down weeks! decadent is a great word

carrie- good for you for getting back into running- will prob be doing a turkey trot too- my county has a great running club and lots of fun low key races but i've never done their thanksgiving one- either busy cooking or out of town. this year will be intown and not hosting

vicci- sounds like you had a great time- it got windy and colder here yesterday afternoon- today forecast sounds downright rude

i ran 20 miles for the first time ever yesterday- not too bad but that last mile about did me in. the weather was about perfect for me- warm when running just a slight bit of breeze, mix of sun and clouds. next week 16, then 20-22 and then the taper- race is nov 11. i've been riding my bike a lot more this summer but not so much the last few weeks as i run these big miles.

going to see cirque du soleil tomorrow (well technically today ) woke up thirsty but will be going back to bed in a few

Happy Birthday, Cheryl! Hope that you have a wonderful day (weather won't be great, but I'm sure that Cirque will be!).

Nat, your planned Thanksgiving dinner looks fabulous (saw it on the food forum)! I'm sure that your Mom is helping and DH is watching the little one, so all should go well and be fun, too!

I got my (long pants, long sleeved) running clothes on but as I laced my shoes I realized that it was raining (it has been rather dismal all day, but dry so far). I'd been waiting for half an hour to go out, but then figured that it's more than a passing drizzle and, at 50 degrees, will be not only wet but cold. Pass!

Hi everyone! Thanks for the Thanksgiving wishes. We'll do the larger family dinner tonight and a smaller one tomorrow. The pie and soup are made, and the turkey is in the oven.

Cheryl, way to go on your longest run ever! Great feeling, isn't it? Happy birthday and enjoy Cirque!!

    Les, welcome home!

Vicci, same to you! Too bad about the mold but glad you managed to enjoy the two days of R&R on the boat. Like your run anecdote, I was going to go for a walk and also just realized it was not just drizzle but rain. Nah... maybe not. I did get in a good spin earlier, though.

Hi to everyone else and happy rest of weekend!

Back... beat... blessed... 78 hours away and had a blast. time to sleep since there wasn't much sleep, lots of emotion, and food that threw off my eating/"diet". but I found some of the hideous sweets this weekend gluten-free coconut macaroons. Supposedly (have to get the recipe) a bag of coconut, a can of condensed milk, and a little vanilla. Cook but they are gooey and decadent.

Love... sleepran (I'm stealing that one)... congratulations on you 20 miler this weekend and I hope (bet you liked) Cirque du Soleil... don't like mold in a boat...

    Happy trails,
    Les

Wow, Les, you certainly sounded as though you were sleep-posting! Sounds like you had a great time, and those macaroons, well, yum (coconut is one of my faves!).

Heading out for a run, delaying because I'm not looking forward to the inevitable soggy-wet and cold feet...

Yep Vicci, that was almost as bad a drunk texting. I hope you get out without getting too wet. It just started pouring here (again). I thought I'd share the uber-simple macaroon recipe (found it)

    Gluten-free Coconut Macaroons
    (from Yumly and AllRecipes)
    14 oz flaked coconut
    14 oz sweetened condensed milk
    2 tsp vanilla extract

    Directions
    1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Grease cookie sheets.
    2. In a medium bowl, mix together the coconut, sweetened condensed milk, and vanilla until well blended. Drop by teaspoonfuls, one inch apart, onto the prepared cookie sheets.
3.Bake for 10 to 12 minutes in the preheated oven, or until edges are slightly browned. Using a moistened spatula, remove at once from baking sheets. Cool on cooling racks until firm. Store in a covered container at room temperature.

Les, I loved your post! I can't laugh too hard, though. I realized later that I wrote "sleptran" instead of "sleepran" which would have been correct since we say "sleepwalked" and not "sleptwalked"

    The recipe looks good!

Vicci, how was your cold run?

Had a nice family Thanksgiving but didn't end up running today as I'm not feeling 100%. Hopefully tomorrow I just made a lentil quiche for J (and for us). J loved it - probably his favourite food so far. I got a photo of him lunging for the entire thing It's actually quite tasty!

    How's everyone else doing?

Vicci - No, no longer in FL. We recently moved up north to NY I'm enjoying the cooler weather. Just started a new job today!

Cheryl - Congrats on the 20-miler!!! Turkey trots are really fun.. I highly recommend doing yours this year.

Les - Wow, those macaroons sound very decadent. Have you made them yet?

Nat - Happy Thanksgiving! The lentil pie sounds great.

Quick fly-by for me to report a 25 min run on Friday.. My legs were very tired from last weeks workouts so I did run/walk for most of it. Also, got in a 25 min run today. Today my legs are fresh as I have done no workouts since last week. It is also nice and cool out so I felt a lot better today. Will bump it up to 30 minutes for my next run. My weight workouts are planned for Wed & Sat this week so I'm not sure when I'll get the runs in yet.. Maybe Thur & Sun?

5k in the bag today - had initially wanted to do 6 or so but I'll take it!

Carrie, where in NY are you if you're comfortable saying? If not, no worries!

Hey Nat - I think I'm more or less recovered from this past weekend. It sounds like you had a decent run, even if you cut it a little short.
Carrie - I haven't had a chance to bake the cookies but I have a small-ish container left over cookies (and they are getting better every day ),

I had a good day today - of course I took the day off to recover from the weekend. The nice thing about that is the ability to pick up the run I "missed" this past weekend. I took a 10.2 mile run in a very light and intermittent drizzle. Lovely to run in 60 degree weather (perfect tank top weather).

Sadly, have to go back to work tomorrow. but I guess I should.

    Happy trails,

Les, I kinda liked the sleep-post! Those macaroons sound so good (I'll take anything with coconut!), thanks for sharing the recipe. Hope that you had a nice day off (with a "drizzly" run!).

How wonderful, Nat, that J likes the lentil quiche! It sounds pretty good to me,too, but DH is not a "lentil fan"... alas... Good job on the 5k after you've been feeling subpar.

Carrie, quite the geographical change but at least you'll be able to run in the summer months, although running in the winter may be a tad hazardous. Please update us on your occupation as well (did you move because of a new job after school?)

I never did go out yesterday, even though I was dressed to (something came up which required some research and I got involved). But that was good because today was so very much nicer outside-- sun and temps in the low 60's when I went out. I got in a little over 2.5 miles after sealing the grout on the floor of the new bathroom (no, it's still not up and running yet, but we're working on finishing what the contractor abandoned last spring. And fixing what was done wrong!).

Still need those good thoughts toward this looooong process of figuring out financing for, in preparation to buy, the beach/ retirement house-- keep sending them my way!

Nat - NYC. DH got a new job.. so we moved and I got a new job, too. I'm working as a research nurse. My last position was also as a research nurse so the job should be fairly similar. Great job on the 5k

Vicci - Good job on the run!

Les - Great to hear you got 10.2 mi in. What are you training for?

Hi to everyone! No other runs to report. A strength/conditioning workout is coming up tomorrow. Then maybe a run on Thur or Fri.

    Happy October everyone.

Les- Happy belated anniversary, 29 years is wow. Glad to hear the retreat went well although you didn't get much sleep. Training sounds like it is going quite well for the marathon.

Nat- Happy Thanksgiving. Sounds like you had a very nice celebration and that Mr J is enjoying lots of new foods. It is so wonderful to expose kids to all kinds of tastes. Great job on keeping up the workouts

Cheryl- Happy Belated birthday. Hope cirq was great, my PT works with them and has been telling me I need to go see the show. How was Congressional last night? My sons went to a birthday party there one year.

Vicci- Sorry to hear about the mold, that must have been a chore. How did the appraisal go? And was your offer accepted on the other house?

Carrie- Wow FL to NYC is a bit of a change, hope you are enjoying the new scenery.

Well I got in about three runs before the leg started to bother me again so one step forward one back. It had me really down for a while, so I backed off everything. But my PT is also a good friend of mine so she got me back on track. I am doing the elliptical with some resistance now and I am walking on the TM at 4 mph until I can build up fast walking as she calls it. So we will see where this takes me.

Hope everyone has a happy hump day.

Whoops! I made a Freudian-type of misspeak in my last post! I should have said:
Still need those good thoughts toward this looooong process of figuring out financing for, in preparation to make an offer on, the beach/ retirement house oops!!! Must get some office work done tonight, I spent the day working on house projects (so no activity of note).

    Back-to-back...

Carrie, I echo Heather-- big change with this move, and probably in many ways! Have you figured out your running routes? Are they very different from the type of terrain that you got used to in FL?

Les I hope that your transition into work was smooth and easy...

HeatherI am so sorry that you fell back a little in your recovery progress. Although I would say "two steps forward and one step back" in your case. It may progress slowly, but it will progress, I am certain. Keep checking back here for some encouragement-- we have lots of it for you!

I got in an "almost 3 mile" run today. Lovely weather-- mid-50's and sunny. I enjoyed it very much (which is nice for a run!). And, for the first time since last spring, Spooky joined me on (a portion of) the trails. He really gets a "spark" when the weather turns cooler...

Claiming 10 miles this morning... 50 degrees for the entire run and it was absolutely lovely.

    See you tomorrow...

les- glad you had a lovely run

vicci- tons of good thoughts your way!

heather- loads of healing thoughts for you leg! congressional was fun and delish as always- i think we've been going to this function for about 10 yrs now- dh gets to golf the next day and loves it. cool about your pt!

ran 18 yesterday- it was a hard run for some reason- my hammies wanted to quit around mile 13 so i told them to shut up but they only listened a little bit- fine today- no residual stiffness or anything- i walked after and tried to stay moving which is why i think i'm ok today- made homemade soup even had to make the broth homemade first. a little bit of wine and now all good! next week is 20-22 and if i'm feeling like i did the last 3 weeks i'm going for the 22, if i feel like yesterday only 20. my coach doesnt want me doing 22 but i want it. we'll see. 8 mile tempo tomorrow

    Hi everyone!

Carrie, NYC - nice! Yes, what a change! Before going to mat leave I had gone to NYC a couple of times in fairly quick succession. If I make it back there next year I'll let you know, OK?

Vicci, good luck with the financing and the paperwork maze!

Les, I can only imagine how much you enjoyed running in 50 degree weather.

Heather, sorry to hear about the setback but I'm with Vicci. It sounds like you are moving forward, albeit more slowly than you'd like. Please do check in often and let us know how things are going!

Cheryl, don't you hate it when hamstrings and other body parts don't listen? Good luck with the 20-22 miler this weekend.

I did a half marathon yesterday. I had vowed to finish at least one half before returning to work, and now it's in the bag. I had done the full marathon at the same event a few years ago, and had found it well organized then, but it's much bigger now (which I hadn't realized) and I was not terribly impressed with the organization and layout. That being said, I'm thrilled to have finished and my time was good for me given the circumstances (I was quite sick from Mon.-Wed. last week and am still not 100%, then Mr. J was sick and not sleeping, I got to the race late because of nutty traffic so had to weave through people the entire race*, I had to take a bathroom break for the first time ever in a race...). Not making excuses, just saying why I'm happy with the time I did

*And yes, I know that getting to a race late is inexcusable. Also the first time I've done that. I would never dream of allowing that to happen at a race where I was seriously looking to finish in a particular time or had trained hard.

Les, was Charlie there? If so I hope he wasn't too disappointed with the race. And my friend S finished the race too and was very strong. I'm so proud of her!

Best sign I saw on the course yesterday: "Someday you will not be able to do this. Today is not that day".

Now to stretch like crazy and look forward!
