Thread: Chocolate Orange Biscotti

    Thumbs up Chocolate Orange Biscotti

I have to share this recipe I tried yesterday. It's not light, but it's SO easy.

These are from "The Chocolate Cake Mix Doctor" and you will NOT taste the cake mix.

    Chocolate Orange Biscotti

1 box Duncan Hines (has to be a NON-PUDDING added mix like Duncan Hines) Devils food cake mix
1/2 cup (1 stick) butter, melted
    2 eggs
    1 cup flour
    1/2 teaspoon orange extract
1 tablespoon (or more) of grated orange zest (the orange part of the peel)
1/2 cup of chopped or shaved almonds

Preheat oven to 350. In large bowl, mix melted butter, cake mix, eggs, flour, orange extract, orange peel and almonds. Mixture will be thik. Mix it with hand mixer or hands until if forms a big ball. Form the ball into a 14 x 4 rectangle. Place rectangle in oven and bake for 30 minutes. Remover rectangle and let cool for 10. Slice cross-wise into 1 inch slices and lay slices on their sides. Bake at 350 for 10 more minutes. Turn off oven and let biscotti's sit for another 30 minutes. Remove from oven and let cool.

I have never made biscotti because I always thought it would be too much trouble. I'm going to give this recipe a whirl because it looks so easy. Thanks for posting.

Thanks for the recipe. I love chocolate and orange together!

If you like orange, you might want to increase the orange peel and/or extract.

Also, these really are terribly easy.

Thanks for posting! I knew I should have ordered this cookbook from the Good Cook as part of my starter package...

Will definitely give this a try... sounds so simple!

You should definitely buy the book. There are tons of really fun recipes and lots historical info/pop culture type info on cake mix and cake mix recipes. So far, I've made the red velvet cake, the chocolate covered cherry cake and these biscotti.

Sorry for being tacky and bumping up my own thread, but since its Cookie Exchange season, I thought I'd remind everyone of this biscotti recipe. I made it last year and it was excellent. In fact, I have a bunch of cake mix lying around so I might make more.

It does not taste like a Cake Mix cookie.

My mom loves chocolate and orange together and her birthday is next week (later this week?). I might have to make these for her. I'm not big on cake mixes, but I use them for school cupcakes and a few recipes (like the pumpkin crunch cake). I'm also a believer in Duncan Hines cake mixes. Thanks for sharing.

Thank you Anna! I love chocolate and orange together, and missed this thread earlier - the recipe is definitely on my "to make" list for the holidays.

Anna, did you dip these in chocolate or decorate them in any way? Or, are they great as is?

One more question...how many does this recipe make?

Thanks! I think I will add this recipe to my holiday baking...sounds yummy!

I dipped a few in chocolate and drizzled some others with white chocolate.

The yield is pretty flexible. If you make a long and wide (4 inch) log and cut the bars an inch each, you'll get 14 big biscotti. I cut mine a little shorter so I'd have more.

I really want to make these and I really don't want to go back to the store to get the orange extract. Do you think if I skip it and up the orange zest a bunch they would be okay?

Editing to say I do have lemon extract. Would that just be weird to sub that for the orange?

Katygirl, I think if you added at least a tablespoon of orangezest you'd still get a good dose of orange flavor. If you have almonds around the house, you could skip the orange altogether and just make chocolate almond biscotti. I wouldn't mix the lemon with the chocolate though.
