I just wanted to let you know that there are people out there lurking about trying to steal from you in any way, shape or form.
I just wanted to warn you all about what can happen.
Last week, we recieved a phone call from our credit card company asking to verify a transaction. Well, it seems that someone tried to transfer $5000 from a joint account into a checking account. It was not me, and I was 99% sure it was not DH as we have never done that before. Plus, whoever tried to do this, did so the day before and DH would have told me if it were him. Still to be sure, I asked the customer service rep to give me a checking account or bank number to verify anyway. It was no where near our number. It was scary!!!!
Well, thanks to MBNA Bank (the visa issuer) - the person did not get away with it. They immediately closed that account and FedEx'd a new account the very next day. It turns out that whoever tried to do this had to only have my DH's birthdate and credit card number. The scary part was that they had just re-issued these new cards two weeks prior so whoever did this, found out this new account # really quickly. Also, we had only used it a couple of times in those 2 weeks.
To prevent this from ever happening, we set up a password with MBNA that we must give them each and every time we would need to call them. Also, if ever anyone wanted to "balance transfer" again, they would need to call from our home phone #. We never intend to use that option anyway. They advised that we do this with other accounts we may have as well.
I wanted to share this with you so that it doesn't happen to anyone. We would have been unsuspecting until the statement came in. However, Visa really nipped this one as they were able to prevent any money from being transferred out. Thank God!!!
So, please be cautious about the info you give out to anyone. It does not take much info for anyone to steal from you.
