Wendy, how did you Fair food entries "fare"?

    Hi Wendy,

Just wanted to see how your County fair food entries fared?

I hope they did well, we loved your special seasoning blend with the roasted garlic, tomatoes, etc. and herbs on our chicken and also on our pork ribs the other night.

Hope you had a lot of fun entering the fair and lots of luck!

    Hi Paula!

Thank you for asking and the well wishes. I turned my items in yesterday - all 8 of them, including the powder. Judging isn't until tomorrow and the fair opens on Friday so I don't know anything yet.

The things that I have the most faith in are the spice powder, the Kahlua Swirl Fudge, and the Margarita Cheeseball. A couple of the quick breads are ok and as for the other 3 breads, I think I need some practice. I will let you know if I win anything.

Hi Everyone! Thank you for your support. I did place at the fair but didn't do as well as last year (my 1st time). Last year, a person who had entered for years told me that if you don't do as well your 2nd year, you will be disappointed and I was at 1st, but then I stood back and realized that the 3 items that I knew in my heart would win something did.

The tomato, basil, and garlic powder that the each of the ladies in Seattle received a sample of, placed 2nd in dried herbs. Kahlua Swirl Fudge placed a 3rd as did the margarita cheese ball. I won't talk about my bread entries except that I have a lot to learn about baking (I am dough challenged)and will make less entries next year but use recipes are better suited (tried and true)to my abilities and more suited to mainstream tastes.

Congratulations!!! To place in your county fair is a tremendous achievement! I can personally vouch for the dried herb powder, as can the other Seattle weekend participants. We are soooooo proud of you!

Congratulations Wendy! Second place is not baaaad! In fact, it is quite an accomplishment just to enter and then win in any standing. We are proud of you and you should be too! Keep up the good work and don't give up. Tell us more about your wonder powder and how to use it.

    Good job, Wendy!

    Wendy,
I think you did just fine. I would never have the "guts" to enter a competition and I think you deserve a blue ribbon for that alone.

I am so proud of you Wendy!

Now we can go look for your name in the display case and I can say I know that WINNER! Can you share with us how you came to even decide to enter and how do you pick out what goes in for competition? Do you make up a recipe or find a good one somewhere and use it? I wish I could make things up that turn out good. I am the type that must have a recipe in front of me.To enter the fair, does it need to be an original recipe or family secret? I've always wanted to know. Thanks Wendy and we'll be looking for your entries. Did you give your recipes to them to put into the cookbook? (A cookbook is sold in the corner of the food building. It has various recipes that are entries but usually not many first place recipes!)

Congratulation Wendy! You should be very proud of yourself! I'm sure you'll come up with just as yummy entries next year, so keep us posted!

    Cool

Just got back in town after a long weekend trip- so I just saw this one!

Congratulations! How fun that must be. I would love to enter something in the fair- I guess I'll have to get busy thinking about it soon.

Thank you everyone for your support, it really means a lot to me.

Mamasue, the powder consists of roasted garlic powder (won a 1st last year), dried tomatoes, and basil. Last summer, I was inspired by a Mrs. Dash (yuck) commercial, and thought that the combination sounded good and gave it a try. I like to add it to minestrone, garlic bread, bruschetta and salads. Some of the ladies from Seattle have used it in casseroles, hamburgers, and on ribs. I am test marketing it and may consider having it manufactured by a private label company. A friend of mine asked that I sell my seasonings in her booth at a holiday craft fair and my hairdresser has preordered 6 for some of her friends. I am really busy right now drying tomatoes since this is the season where they are at their best.

Cookinator, you are really familiar with the OC fair! Where do you live? Although I do buy the fair recipes (mainly out of curiosity), I haven’t submitted any. Maybe I will next year, but in the past, I have found the packet to be ridden with typos. As you probably know, the majority of the entrants don’t usually share the recipes. I entered for the 1st time last year. In the Home and Hobbies building, there is an information table along 1 side of the building where you can sign up to get a catalog for next year. They also have the information online and it is downloadable. It usually arrives in March and the due date where you declare what areas that you want to make is usually in late May. As far as recipes are concerned, I think that your best choices are something tried and true that appeals to mainstream tastes. It is kind of weird because what they liked last year was different this year. There were a few things that I tried for the 1st time this year and they didn’t win. I chose my areas 1st and then thought about the recipes later. If you want more specific information, please feel free to pm or email me. I highly encourage all of you to try and enter your state and county fairs as we do have some spectacular cooks here!

Congratulations, Wendy!!! BTW, your spice powder is also awesome on grilled salmon w/ a bit of Cajun seasoning added for heat. Once your private-label seasoning catches on nationally, we'll all be able to say we knew you when!
