    Do you dip?

So I went to this restaurant last night, called the Vesta Dipping Grill http://www.vestagrill.com/, which was incredible, IMO. You choose an entre, which is some sort of grilled meat or veggies (though it was slim on the vegetarian offerings) and then you pick 3 of their 30-something different dipping sauces to come along with your meal. I got a mango-mandarin orange grilled pork loin chop served on top of a minted bread salad and mango coleslaw along with a strawberry rhubarb compot, a jalepeno mustard and a mango chutney for dipping. It was out of this world!

Another reason I loved this is because I always order my sauce on the side and here is a restaurant that specializes in on the side (on the side is a big thing with you...)

The others I went with all got variations of grilled beef with sauces such as chipotle, black pepper aoli (sp?), roasted corn, thai paste, ginger cream.

However, one of my managers came along and she wasn't at all excited because she doesn't like sauce on stuff. I don't think she used any of her sauces.

    So, do you dip?

Everything on the side. I'm one of those freaks that doesn't like their foods to touch each other, especially sauces.

    That sounds really interesting!

On the side is a big thing with me, too.

I'm an "on the side" also. Oh Aggie94, I'm one of those people too. I don't want my food touching and I just about can't stand it when BF mixes all of his together. What's he thinking?

On the side...then you have control over how much to use!!! I am vegetarian, but love to dip baked tofu (as well as veggies of course) etc...very good :-)

LOL! My DH is the same way. I can't tell you how disgusted I am at Thanksgiving to see that pile of turkey-mashed potatoes-sweet potatoes-gravy-stuffing all mixed up together on his plate.

I'm SO glad I'm not the only one...

What a waste! I LOVE interesting dipping sauces, so does DH. So much so, that it's almost embarrassing sometimes to be eating with him!

I prefer on the side too, but that is because I think restaurants add too much sauce to things for my liking.

DH calls me "Sally" when we are out and I am asking lots of questions and asking for things a certain way.

I can't STAND for my foods to touch. I've honestly (don't laugh!) thought about investing in a few compartment trays (you know, the trays you used to get in school with the seperate places for entree, side, dessert, etc), but I'm afraid that would seem a little over the top. I don't even like for my ketchup to touch my fries until I dip them into it. The worst for me is bean juice. I love beans and their juice, I just don't want it mixing with stuff on my plate.

I voted other, btw...I dip, but not every bite

Alright. I'll be the lone horse (or would that be piggie?).

I completely understand the food separation urge. SOMEtimes I want my sauces separate. Sometimes I want my green beans to leave my mashed potatoes ALONE!

But, to be totally honest, I don't really have a "thing" about it. I CAN eat sauces atop my food. I don't even mind if two different sauces trickle together in rivers. In fact, I've discovered unexpectedly complimentary flavors this way.

Emily, was this a Houston restaurant?? Sounds yummy!

I voted on the side, but not because I mind my food touching, but because I'm like dulcecoeur, and prefer to control how much of the sauce I get on each bite! I'm also a salad dressing dipper for the same reason...

Nope, sorry Rebecca, but it's a Denver (LoDo) restaurant.

And the reason I do sauce on the side is for the same reason, to control how much I'm eating. It's exactly the reason I do it with salad - I hate, hate, hate soggy lettuce and most restaurants drown the poor leaves (not to mention use tons of oil).

But the reason I liked this place was that there were so many different choices. Like lorilei, I actually like to mix the sauces, and get combonations of flavors in my mouth. When I get the salad dressing on the side I usually get two on the side to mix I don't mind food touching - mashed potatos mixed with creamed corn is still one of my favorite meals (Eva - don't hold it against me )

I'm sorry, I have to confess I laughed.

I'm a mixed breed I guess. Sometimes I prefer sauces on the side (usu if its a really fattening sauce), other times on the top is fine (for the only moderately fattening sauces).

However, GOD FORBID a really wet sauce touches any bread on my plate. I cannot tolerate wet bread.

When you start to cook, as when you begin to live, you think that the point is to improve the technique until you end up with something perfect, and that the reason you haven’t been able to break the cycle of desire and disillusion is that you haven’t yet mastered the rules. Then you grow up, and you learn that that’s the game.

I voted on the side, but that's only because I have to - watching my calories and all

I'm a lorilei mutant If this were dream land where there were no such thing as weight gain, I would be the one at thanksgiving mixing everything together My dad and I actually used to make "thanksgiving sandwiches"....turkey, stuffing, cranberry sauce and sweet potato stuffed between two slices of homemade bread with mayo ...ready to hurl yet? Actually the thought of that now sort of makes me want to hurl Where is that skinny girl voice coming from?

We make these too with the Thanksgiving leftovers, only we were making them using the leftover crescent rolls my mother makes. We'll use just about any and all Thanksgiving leftovers on the sandwich -- turkey, stuffing, cranberry sauce, mashed potatoes, squash, etc. There's even a little deli my DF and I found that makes a Thanksgiving sandwich with fresh turkey, cranberry sauce, and stuffing. It's yummy, but it's missing mashed potatoes! I love combining all the foods on my plate from some meals. I used to love eating macaroni and cheese on my pork chops, and corn in my tuna noodle casserole. And I love to mush all my rice and beans and chicken mole together when my DF makes that!

As far as dipping goes, it depends on what I'm eating and what the sauce is. I am a huge fan of dipping sushi and dumplings in a teriyaki soy sauce. I don't like to put the ketchup directly on my fries, and I feel that restaurants put too much salad dressing on salads so I prefer that on the side. But with Itlaian food I can never have too much pasta sauce on my plate, and I slather most Mexican food in salsa. And I can't forget chocolate sauce -- you can never have too much of that on top of any dessert, be it ice cream, cake, pie, whatever, directly on top, why waste energy with dipping there

I don't mind my foods touching (those thanksgiving sandwhiches are making my mouth water ) but have to preface that it depends.
If I go somewhere that I know uses good quality ingredients, I could care less how much they pile on (we dont' go out that often ) but if it's a fast-food type of place like Chili's or Applebees(sp?), then I ask for stuff on the side or I re-do their menu and tell them how I'd like it (another "sally" here too ).

Creamed corn???? You eat it without a gun pointed at your head? I've hated cream corn since babyhood. What an awful way to ruin perfectly good spuds. I'm starting to think I need to buy Jen's plates with the compartments.....

    Hi Emily!

    That place sounds like fun!

I love dipping sauces but in moderation. I don't tend to drench stuff in ketchup, gravy, cheese sauce, whatever; rather, I'll use a bit every few bites. However, at a restaurant like that I would probably dip pretty much every bite, because the sauces must have been delicious!

I don't care one way or another about food "touching", for the most part (since that seems to be the supplementary question on this thread, I thought I would answer it ).

I'm a combination girl - I don't normally ask for things on the side, but at home, I'll usually put the sauce on the side, because it's easier for my children if I'm not sure if they'll like the sauce or not.

I like it when restaurants automatically put the salad dressing on the side, because although I don't dip my salad, I like to control how much dressing I pour on. I also don't like gravy on my mashed potatoes (especially if they're GOOD potatoes), but I do like homemade gravy over sliced white bread. (This I usually only do at my grandma's house.)

    Mmmmmmmmm....I'm hungry!
