A variation on the JJ/Gwendolyn challenge?

I don't know if I am up to tackiling an entire cookbook by myself but I wonder how it would work if we picked a cookbook and then each made a recipe from that book and shared a review. For example, Moosewood books seem to be very popular. We could pick one of those-I favour the Low fat Favorites book but am open to anything . Everyone who is interested picks a recipe, makes it and posts a review.
If this is a dumb idea, forgive me. Just throwing it out for feedback.
    What do you all think?

    Lightbulb Neat Idea!

    I think that's a great idea!

I don't personally have the cookbook with me, but if someone "assigned" me a recipe, I'd be more than happy to make it (preferably seeing as it was vegetarian)...

...I wonder how we could organize it so it doesn't take weeks to plan? Should people just 'claim' a recipe as the one they'll try?

Fun idea, Maureen! Can't wait to see what others have to say...

Me too! I don't have this cookbook either, but maybe this means it's time to visit half.com.

I don't have the cookbook (I've checked out a few Moosewoods from the library and just can't get into them), but I just wanted to assure you that this isn't a dumb idea at all! I think it's cool. If it gets up and running I'll be following in spirit.

That lasagne recipe I shared with you a few weeks ago is from Moosewood Low Fat. Delicious to boot too.

Good idea Kima. I'll happily participate.

    Hi Maureen!

I might be interested in "playing" if you guys do something like that. I wonder, though, if something like the Moosewood books might be a bit cumbersome to split up, since they tend to be so big...? Or maybe we could have people "in charge" of various chapters of a big book like that, and then people could e-mail/PM them and tell them what they wanted to make. Or else I guess people could all just make wahtever they wanted out of the particular book, and if they overlap, they overlap -- having multiple reviews on the same thing is not a bad thing anyway!

Just thinking off the top of my head here -- haven't had coffee yet, so I take no responsibility for my ramblings. I do like the idea, though, and am quite possibly game!

Do recipes we have already made count?

And I agree that Moosewood LF is a good pick. A lot of us here have it and love it.

Then you grow up, and you learn that that’s the game.

Count me in! I have two Moosewood cookbooks and love them. Maybe someone could list all the recipes from the cookbook and each person could copy and paste adding their name next to the recipe they will review?

    Me too!

I'm in too! Its a great idea, and there are so many recipes to try it will help narrow the field.

Glad it wasn't such a dumb idea after all!

I don't think it has to be super organized-just look through the book, pick a recipe you have never made before and post your choice. It can be any thing you want-and I was thinking just one recipe but it might be fun to do an entire menu from the book.
For those of you who don't have the book and want to participate-perhaps you could say what kind of recipe you would like and we could list some for you to choose from.
Let's give lots of time -how about we declare May "Cook a Moosewood recipe" month?
After that someone else could suggest another popular book. I look forward to getting more use out of my many books!
And we could have two books on the go if Moosewood doesn't appeal to some. Any suggestions?

    So, Moosewood LF, everyone?

I liked Natasha's idea of someone kind of "taking charge" of a chapter and delegating recipes through PM / email ...

As for me, if anyone with the book could give me a vegetarian recipe that they haven't tried, I'd love to make that one of my projects (aside of school) this week! (Pretty please, with sugar on top )

Thanks so much, Maureen, the Master of Novel Culinary Adventures!

I'm in. May would be great, looks like I found a good job in Dayton, OH and by May I should actually have a real kitchen of my own. I have the book and would make any kind of recipe.

If anyone is from that area and has a supper club going I'd love to receive an email from them.

I'd be willing to take charge of a chapter! I just have to get the book first. Hmm. What a hardship!

I don't get what you all mean by taking charge of a chapter. Do you mean each person would be assigned a chapter and then they pick a recipe from that chapter?
It seems like it would be far easier just to let people choose whatever recipe/s they wanted. Once you pick one or more then those are "taken" so to speak.
I am open to any method but I don't think it has to be complicated or like a school project!

Maureen, I don't think you answered my question (unless I am just blind and not seeing it) - Do we have to re-make recipes that have already been made? i.e. I know lots of people on this bb have made the sweet-potato black bean burritos.

I vote for Natasha's second idea of just choosing a cookbook and letting everyone make whatever recipe they want to. If they overlap, we just get more than one review of that recipe. This method would allow lots of people to participate even if they are not daily BB users, and it would not become too cumbersome. The only thing to agree on is which cookbook to review each month, and then we're off!

I would love to participate. I moved to a new town and really miss my cooking club. This sounds like a great alternative! I even have the cookbook, although I have only made a few of the recipes. So many good recipes, but so few meals (and time during the work week)!

Sorry i didn't answer your question beacooker. I think it would be nice to try and do recipes that have not been reviewed before but it's not crucial. the sweet potato burriots does have alot of reviews so it might be one to miss.
If everyone posts the recipe they are going to make from Moosewood LowFat Favorites in May then there shouldn't be a worry about duplicates. I will sit down tonight and pick the recipes I am going to review. Whoever picks first should start a new thread!
