    I am sick of popups!!

We seem to be getting more and more of these annnoying things! We have one called messenger service and if we leave the computer alone for too long we get millions of them. Now I have popups that won't go away when I try to close them. I have one about "Ubid" right now and it won't go away.

Can someone tell me an easy, inexpensive way to get rid of these bleep bleep things!

I feel your pain. This is what I use: http://www.panicware.com/ They have several versions, and one is free. On every step of downloading you will have to search the page for the link to the free one as the one you can buy is displayed more prominently. It works very well!

At home, I use Mozilla for my browser. There is a setting in Mozilla that allows me to stop pop ups, and java script too. I love it. It's always a rude awakening when I surf the net at work and am hit with those nasty pop ups.

Laura, thank you. I had installed the demo version of the panicware software on my husband's computer but the 30 days expired and it kept satying I needed to register. I was pretty sure there was a free version but could not seem to find it last time I looked. I just visted the site and you're right you do have to sort of look for it, but it's there and available.

I use the Proxomitron. It keeps away popups, ads and banners. You set your preferences so that you can stop as much or as little stuff as you want. It's also free.

    Download for the Proxomitron

Unfortunately the original site moved and this doesn't give you a whole lot of info but it's awesome. Let me know if you need help/suggestions with the settings.

Loren, I have always had trouble with Proximitron when I go in to do the settings. I follow their directions and can get to the requisite screen and all, but I think it does not work because we have a cable router. Any ideas?

Mary, I do not think it's because you have cable. My brother, who has his own internet business and is extremely computer savvy, introduced me to the Proxomitron and he has cable.

All I did was install it and checked off the following settings:

    Banner Blaster (limit text)
    Area Map Ad Blaster
Area Map Ad Blaster part 2
    Kill Java Script banners
Kill all images on selected pages
    un-prefix URL's
    Blink Buster (Blink to Bold)
    Onunload unloader
    Kill pop up windows
restore pop ups after a page loads
    link de-obfuscator
    wordwrap all form textboxes
    geocities branding killer
    suppress all java script errors
    stop browser window resizing
    hide browser referrer from JS
    kill window external methods
    frame jumber-outer
    kill anti-cache meta tags

I also know that when he helped me set it up we had to go into the port somewhere and assign it to port 8080. Something with your port may be your issue but I can't be sure what your setting should be since I'm not a very good techie.

Then we put it into the Startup folder so that when I turn on the computer, the Proxomitron comes on immediately.

Let me know if you want me to ask him more about the port thing.

Loren, that was the part I'm talking about, setting the port. Ask him, if the port setting would be affected if you have a cable router (i.e. does it interfere with the router.)

    TIA

There is a popup blocker available from Google that we are using, and it seems to be very effective. Go to Google.com and choose Services and Tools. Scroll down to Google Toolbar. On the upper right corner you can click on Google Toolbar 2.0 (beta), which includes the popup blocker. And I like having the Google Toolbar anyway; it puts a small Google search window right under your normal toolbar (I use Internet Explorer).
