    HLSG/WWSG Week of July 20

I wanted to post, so I thought I'd start the new week's thread.

Congratulations Jackie!! Great news on the job offer. Good luck with selling your house and finding a new one. Yay!

So, my week went pretty well. I got through most everything, although I decided to take Friday as a rest day because I was really tired. Then we went fishing yesterday instead of golfing, so I didn't do much yesterday either. This morning I'm dressed to work out (Andrew went to the office) so I might do some pilates.

I'm having some trouble with my hand so I think I need to give it some rest. Because both golf and tennis use my dominant arm almost exclusively, I'm getting a lot of fatigue in my hand and forearm. Add in work at the computer with the mouse, and I'm a sore puppy. So, I think I'm going to change my workouts a bit.

    Sunday: pilates 60 minutes
    Monday: swim 30 minutes
    Tuesday: golf 9 holes
    Wednesday: tennis lesson
Thursday: golf 9 holes, tennis with DH
    Friday: rest
    Saturday: golf 18 holes

I might do something different Tuesday, it depends how my hand feels. We'll see.

Have a good week everyone and take care of yourselves.

Thanks for starting things Heidi. I hope your hand feels better!

    Here's my plan:

Sunday: ran 2 miles, walked 3o minutes, going for another walk in a few minutes.
Monday: cardio other than running, weights, Core training
    Tuesday: run 6 (I hope!)
    Wednesday: maybe run before cycle
    Thursday: I'm hoping for another run between 4 - 6 miles...we'll see!
    Friday: cycle....run??
    Sat: not sure

We are scheduled to have a rainy week so my running plans may change. I'm thinking of going to the yoga studio in town this week. I've been wanting to go, but I don't know when I'll fit it in and don't want to pay for two fitness facilities.

Hope everyone is enjoying their Sunday!

    Hi Heide and Cindi

I need to work out early in the day this week since we're in the middle of setting a record of straight over-100 temps

    Here's my plan:

SUN - short cardio plus strength (Done)
    MON - walk/run intervals
TUES - short cardio plus strength
    WED - kickboxing, hopefully
    THURS - cardio/strength
FRI - Pilates (or kickboxing if I don't go Wed)
    SAT - rest

Cindi - feel free to send some of your rain our way
Heide - hope your hand feels better

Hope everyone stays cool this week!

Minky -- Did you catch the news that I'm moving to Titletown? Well not exactly -- I'm moving to De Pere. Accepted a new job that promises to be fun and eases DH's commute considerably. I have to admit that I'm a "closet" Packer-backer....don't go in for all the hoopla here at home, but I'm their best fan/ambassador when I travel or talk to others!

Hmmm....my goals this week are going to be rather vague, what with showing the house, lining up realtors, movers, etc. My weight was excellent on my Saturday weigh-in, but of course, with my stomach in knots for much of the last two weeks, that was predictable! With the big uncertainty out of the way, I'm feeling a little more comfortable, and I have no interest/time to do meal planning/cooking, so we're grabbing what we can. Not good, but it's only temporary.....

Went to the gym today and did 30 mins on the elliptical and spent some time in the pool before coming home and WEEDING, sprucing up the front yard, etc. It was horribly humid here today -- not all that hot, but just thick. Ugh. I am about to head into my fourth shower of the day.... (don't ask.)

Church went well -- our pastor announced that we are moving and I managed to contain my emotions and play through the service. Had a bit of a burp when going through items with the choir before the service -- one piece I hadn't expected to play was listed in the bulletin and I had never played it before, it was in the key of E , and I was about to say, "We can't do this" when one choir member said, "We can sing this a capella." I was so grateful....and it was actually rather dramatic to have the choir lead this piece of liturgy without accompaniament.

The weather forecast is for a cold front to move in tonight and keep us in the low 70s (60s near the lake) for much of the week. I can't wait.

Heide -- hope your hand/arm gets some well deserved rest this week.

Cindi -- rain can be a good thing....enjoy the yoga.

    Les -- where are you????

Jackie - Great News I'm so glad everything has worked out for you and your family on the move.

As far as the Pack, well, the closer the better, in my opinion (ha, here I sit 2,000 miles away ) Anyway, I am really glad things are working our for you and your family!!!

Thanks for starting Heide - see I can be later in than first.

Sounds like a fun week. I'm glad that everything went well today and that things are shaping up for you and your family as the move day comes closer.

    Les -- where are you????
You wouldn't believe it if I told the whole story (and I don't have time because I'm rapidly becoming a pumpkin). We had a power-outage this evening. Not too bad except that I was writing down the weight training routine for Cindi (p.s. I'll post it if others want to see the routine - it is rather long though). So my lovley (joking) computer had to restart - it only takes 30 minutes for my computer with Windows Me to restart after a power-down. So I've been recomposing the weights "thing" for Cindi and letting the computer restart.

This week will be week two. I'm not exactly sure what it entails and it is late so I'll promise to post in the am with the schedule.

Good seein some old faces from the crowd. Hope the week is good for all.

    Peace,
    Les

    Schedule as promised

    This week's schedule:

    Sun - XT w/weights (done)
Mon - 30-40 minutes at tempo (may push to tomorrow)
Tue - 3 miles EZ (running recovery - may do Monday)
Wed - 3 miles race pace
    Thu - 5 miles EZ

    Sat - 11 miles long

Nothing too taxing yet but good to reacquaint me with my training regimen.

Hope all have a pleasant week and stay as cool as possible.

    Jackie! Congratulations on the job!

Well I am back to work after 5 days at the sectional swim meets for SO's son. State is this weekend, but I just don't know if I can muster up another meet. It would be my third weekend of watching kids swim, and since my kids don't have their state cuts, I really don't want to be there. Plus, there are a 1000 kids at this meet. They are obviously going to be lowering times for next year.

Workout wise, I got a 9 mile run in on Sunday. I went 7 before my knee started acting up and then walked 3/4 of a mile and then ran the other two.

    Monday: rest/maybe upper body
    Tuesday: 6 miles
    Wednesday: lower body
    Thursday: track work
    Friday: 3-4 easy/ upper body
    Saturday: rest
    Sunday: 10 miles

Minky, I was in Portland this past week for the swim meet. I was sooo hoping for cooler weather. I hope it changes for you soon.

Cindi~ I know you folks have had your share of rain, but I would dearly love to have some here.

Les, have you officially started training for the marathon?

Heide: I have some stretches that I can explain to you for hand that worked with issues I was having. I don't know how much they would help, but if you want them just PM me.

Well off to the ortho for my daughter. It is going to be a long work week.

Sorry to hear about your knee. Is the problem a chronic one or is this something new? {{Thinking out loud...}} How old/many miles do you have on your shoes?

That's right - just starting week 2 for the Richmond (VA) Marathon that will be on 15 November. Looking forward to this race (this will be my second time in this one) and I'm shooting to cut at least 10 seconds off my Miami Tropics Marathon time (3:21:09) but I'd like to cut about 70 seconds or more.

    Happy trails to all,
    Les

Laura-9 miles! That's awesome! I hope your knee feels better. I have a friend whose boys swim....the meets sound grueling! I don't blame you for not wanting to go again.

Les-I followed the lower body workout you sent me. The only exercise I wasn't sure how to do was the sitting calf lift. I did most of the upper body exercises too, but then ran out of time. It has been a while since I've devoted an entire workout to weight training. It felt good to do that again. Thank you!

We do need the rain, but DS10 is at Cub Scout camp this week. We went by to visit him tonight (we're fortunate that it is only a few miles from our house). Everything was going well. It rained for a few minutes, but then it stopped.

I'm not sure what I'm going to do tomorrow. I don't know if I'll be up to running 6 miles. Maybe I'll head out and see how I'm feeling. I may go to Pilates. Big decisions!!!

    Weights

Cindi - Glad the weight workout went well. I'll see if I can find a picture of the seated calf lift - it is a machine that pivots under the seat with a cross-piece that goes over the knees and a support where you put your toes and push up with the toes. It sounds weird but once you see the machine it makes a lot of sense.

Today's workout was another elliptical session after work (thank goodness I don't mind eating dinner at 8:00 ).

Off to beddy-bye. Hope everyone else is having a good Monday.

    Peace,
    Les

well, it's Tuesday. I swam yesterday and it felt good. I'm still feeling it. I swam 30 minutes without any trouble. I'm feeling it in my triceps and my quads and my inner thighs. Oooh, I needed that. I only managed about 700 meters, but I figure that's a pretty good start, considering I did 200 meters with a kickboard. Today, I golfed 9 holes and played terribly. bleah. My hand was bothering me a bit, and I think I was just generally not with it. Oh well. I got out there, and that counts.

Laura, it would be great if you could describe the hand exercises, if you have a chance.

I hope everyone is having a good week. I'm going to my tennis lesson tomorrow morning. Here's hoping my hand isn't giving me too much trouble. Some preventative ibuprofen might be called for.

Oh, btw, spider bite update: I still have a little reminder of my spider bite from a while back, and I'll likely have a scar. Today, my housekeeper came to work with a huge lump under her arm. Looks like it's exactly the same thing. Poor girl. She got it Saturday. I feel so bad for her.

so, that's the news from here.

    Sore arms

Heide - Sorry to hear about the sore arms - and the effect they had on your golf game today. Not surprising really that you didn't do very well golfing after swimming (a new event) and especially with all the kicking. You'd be surprised (maybe) how much you use your legs for golfing. At least I know that I forget when I do dumb things like run in the morning then golf in the afternoon and can't figure out why my swing and game is all over the place.

Everyone else - have a great Tuesday.

    Exclamation Hot and Humid

Hey gang - just my chance to complain (not really) about the weather here. What a nasty afternoon for a run - but I still worked in about 7 - 7.25 miles. When I left at noon the heat index was 100 (give or take). I'm not certain that I was as smart as I could have been going out but still if I didn't go out I would be relegated to running after work again (and another late dinner). A big issue right now is it isn't any cooler (heat index an hour ago was 100.7). And to top it off there are thunderstorms brewing (another given in Norfolk in the summer).

Regardless, I must say that it felt great to go out and run and get fresh air. I've certainly spent too much time in the office of late and need to spend more time in the fresh air. Maybe this is the start of something good.

Hope everyone is doing well and keeping cool in the hot and humid days of summer.

Hello! This week is going well - I am heading our right now to work out. I made the mistake of going to to gym yesterday afternoon, when it was107 degrees out They say we'll get cooling trend (all the way down to 95) tomorrow! Ha! I better go get the sweaters out

    Hope everyone is keeping cool!

    We're having a heat wave

Minky - YUCK! 107 in Boise? That's gotta suck. How is the humidity there? I seem to remember that things are relatively dry but I may be mistaken.

Today could be a wash out - at least outside. We're under severt Thunderstorm warnings until 6 pm with potential 60 mph gusts. I'd have to lock myself down if it's that windy out there (no weight to hold me down).

Be careful all - it's going to be a nasty summer I can already tell.

Les-I got a laugh out of your sweatin' with the oldies comment (wasn't sure if you were talking about all of us!!!). My kids used to watch that Richard Simmons video at my parent's house and think it was so funny!

I'm not sure we have the seated calf machine at my gym. It doesn't sound familiar. I was feeling Monday's workout yesterday! It was good....good pain! However, running didn't happen. I did get up and walk for about an hour.

Today I only went to cycle. I needed to accomplish some things at home this morning and it was kind of rainy and very humid. I shouldn't complain after reading about the temperatures in VA and Boise. I had no idea it got that hot in Idaho!

One of my son's bunk mates at camp got bitten by something nasty the other night. We think it may have been a spider. It didn't swell too much....so maybe not....certainly nothing like your bite, Heide. He thinks whatever bit him had fangs!

Ha! As I type this, it is 64 degrees in the greater Milwaukee area. Clear, blue sky and sunny.

I signed the formal job offer yesterday and have to do my drug screen tomorrow, so things are inching along. I'm going from excitement back to paralysis back to excitement again. (The job is really going to be fun, I can tell!) One of the best pieces of news yesterday was that my relocation package covers having the MOVERS pack our stuff up!!! Yeah! I was not looking forward to that. My newest phase of anxiety is selling/buying a house.....It was only five weeks ago today that I discovered the ad for the job in the newspaper!

As for healthy living? What's that? Haven't been to the gym since Sunday , but should make it there this afternoon.

Les - it's actually pretty dry here (thankfully - can you imagine 107 and 90% humidity ) Today, though, it's feeling a little humid, and there's a haze of smoke over the valley from a forest fire. YUK!

Good luck with the thunderstorms, Les!

Jackie - you lucky girl! I've never had the pleasure of someone else packing our stuff for a move...

My good news - I've gotten my workout in for today

    hi everyone

I'm late posting this week but hope everyone is doing well with packing, new jobs, swim meets, spider bites, etc. I am pretty much on schedule this week and plan on getting in another 5 miles run tomorrow despite the muggy, hot weather. It sounds a lot like what Les is putting up with in Norfolk. Daily storms with wind, lightning and hail!

Leaving for Vermont and Maine on Friday so hopefully I'll get a few (less humid) runs in up there. I've been swimming a few more times and enjoy that so it will probably become part of my routine....

Richard Simmons comes to mind - that catchy phrase always rings true when I'm out sweating away on my runs. (Boy do I have low entertainment level.)

Forgot to tell you that soreness/stiffness the day after doing the legs workout is normal but now you know. This is a good link to show you just what the seated calf machine looks like - Seated Calf Machine - a pretty demonic machine if you ask me (but I like it).

Jackie - Ah to have 64 degrees again. WOW! Just weeks since you first saw the job announcement - how time flies. And for moving - glad your relocation package paid for professional movers. After too many moves to count (about 10 as a kid and 10 as an adult) I don't think that I'd want to move myself again (did it once when everything fit in the back of a small U-Haul). I'm sure that you'll get back to the workout routine soon. Have you found anyplace to workout at your new house?

    Here comes the rain,

Les-we do have that machine at the gym. I've never used it. I use to lift weights a few times a week, but have done so much more cardio in the past year, that I've gotten away from that type of training. It felt good to get back into it.

I haven't watched the Richard Simmons video. Maybe I should borrow it from my mother!!!

Bride-after tomorrow morning, the forecaster said we should have some good weather. I'm right between Vermont and Maine, hopefully you'll get in some humid-free runs! Have a great trip!

Jackie-I think the hardest part of making the decision. Everything else is or will fall into place. What is your start date?

    Wednesday and half-way home

Bride - Glad to hear that you like swimming so much. It is a great exercise to keep your cardio going while giving the legs a rest (especially the ITB). BTW - how is your marathon training going? I'm doing fairly well, half way through my second week. Training for the Richmond Marathon in November.

Great torrential downpour this evening, bad time to go out for a run so off to the gym for an elliptical. Always feels good to get a good sweat going after spending most of the day inside.

Happy trails and off into the sunset for me,
    Les

I had to laugh at this, Les, because my legs really hurt after swimming on Monday. That may be because I did 200 meters with the kickboard, but my inner thighs and my ankles were feeling it the next day. I know that's not what you meant, but it still made me laugh.

I played tennis yesterday and was off my game. I think my biorhythms are down, since golf on Tuesday was pretty lousy too. So, I'm taking golf off this morning and I'll play tennis tonight with DH. Hopefully the rest this morning will do me good.

    Have a good thursday everyone.

I'm being kind of a slug today. I blew off running this morning. I rarely do that, but have so much to accomplish today. That's my excuse! I haven't run since Sunday. Once I stop, I have a hard time getting started again. I'm going to run before cycle tomorrow morning....now I said....I have to do it!

    Enjoy the day everyone!

Sometimes I get ahead of myself and say what I think (that's scary) as opposed to what I mean. I guess it would have been better to say - give your knees a rest - yep, that's the ticket.

Cindi - SOund a little down - take care of yourself. And I hope you have a great run in the morning.

Hope the weather stays like it is right now drizzling off and on and the temps in the middle 70s. At least until I can get out and run at lunch today (I really mean that too - 8 pm dinners are really starting to suck).

    Happy trails,

    Hey guys --
I have been lurking and trying not to beat myself up for my lackadasical ways.

Dad went back into the hospital (although he is out now) and it put me in a funk. Missed the gym for a hospital visit on both Monday and Tuesday. Went out to lunch on Wednesday instead ... I did get the Wednesday night bike ride in -- 15 miles -- good pace

Not sure what the rest of the week holds I have belly dance tonight and I owe my dog a good walk this afternoon.

Glad to hear things are going well for everyone for the most part.

Jasmine - Sorry to hear things haven't been going well for you these days. I hope that you are taking this time to deal with the healthful living portion of you life (probably more important than the workout portion - that'll come back in time).

    Prayers are being lifted again.

{{{jas}}} Hope things will be looking up for you soon.

Made it to the gym yesterday for 30 minutes on the elliptical trainer and an upper body strength training workout. Didn't feel like doing anything when I walked into the club, but was glad I did it afterwards.

DH and I made the rounds in our neighborhood last night to let the neighbors know we're moving. DS is starting to "act out" a little bit about this whole ordeal...I really want this phase behind me, but know that I have to be patient and just keep my eye on the prize, so to speak. (Don't you just hate it when you feel like you are living life by going through the motions?)

Another beautiful day here....I'm going to get up from my desk and go for a walk in the 75 degree sunshine!

    Overcast and reasonably cool

Today's run - even though I felt like I had lead legs, 4 for 4 running/elliptical this week takes a lot out of my legs - was pretty good. The weather held up and it was only in the lower 80s - no 100+ heat index today.

Jackie - Dorry to hear about DS and I hope that he comes through this okay. These will be trying times for him - and you and DH too - so I'm praying for peace and relative tranquility as the move day gets closer.

    Peace to all,
    Les
