Thumbs up Virtual Running Buddies -- Week of July 25-August 1

Hi all! Hope nobody minds me starting this week's thread.

Carrying over a couple of thoughts from last week's thread:

Susan, good luck at the Bix (though by the time you read this, you will already have done the race). I remember reading about it in RW a few years ago, and have also heard that it's tons of fun. Is this your first time doing it? Oh, and it IS funny how much you and your husband have in common with my husband and me! Very cool! Funny you should mention that about not having kids. We always feel like it's hard to get everything done that we want to, and then we marvel at people who have kids and still train and compete in events. I guess it's all time management, but I remain in awe of them!

Les, good going on all those hard workouts! Enjoy the day off.

I just got back from a 5-miler and it was hot out there! Not terribly humid, fortunately, but probably about 82-83 F and (please don't yell at me too hard) I didn't take water because I didn't feel like carrying the bottle. I need to start using the Camelbak regularly because I hate carrying bottles, but don't mind the feel of the Camelbak. It was pretty fun, though.

Over to you, O fellow runners!

Well I was supposed to do a hilly trail tonight (the one I did about 3 weeks ago) that is at a higher altitude, but as it has been thundering off and on all day, I think I will hit the treadmill. This trail is in the woods, and you really can't see the storms coming in. The last time I ran it, a storm started coming is as we were halfway though a 4 mile run. That freaked me out. Besides as I haven't run on the treadmill in ages I don't feel too bad.

I have a friend of mine who started running about 4 years ago and now she is a major marathoner; she is doing 3 this summer (since running Boston) and one was the Leadville marathon (which is above 10k feet I believe) and the other is the Pikes Peak Marathon. She works full time and has 4 kids. She schedules her runs while her kids are at swim team practice and then does her long runs on the weekend. The down side is that her husband doesn't run, so it really limits their time. But as you said Natasha, it just takes really good time management.

I really like the fuel belt that I have. I guess my only complaint is that the water doesn't stay cool. I am comtemplating filling the bottles halfway and then putting them in the freezer, and then filling them the rest of the way before my run. Has anyone tried that?

I have a 9 miler scheduled for Sunday, but I still don't know where. Fortunately it should be cooler. As it turns out, I only had to go 8 last week instead of 9 -- that would have been 4 less laps on that $%#! track!

Susan have great time in your run. Les, enjoy the swamp! Everyone else have a great week!

    Enjoyed a well deserved break

Thanks all - I really needed the break today. Legs were acting very poorly today and this evening. I mean my left knee started to throb this evening when LW and some friends and I were at the Baseball game. It felt like someone was punching me below my kneecap. I hope that it's nothing too critical except for my body telling me I need to take it a little easy now. The big miles will come soon enough.

Tomorrow is an 11 miler and I think I'll be alone on the trail (at least the only one at my pace) because my training partner is off at his family's place in the Piedmont mountains (NC). Of course that means that I'll probably go out too fast - nothing to make me keep my pace down so I'm going to have to be really conscious of my pace and all the other things that I'm supposed to do and not on my speed. The first real speed work comes on Monday (4 x 800m on 3:18).

Luckily (??) no kids here either so I don't have to juggle their schedules along with LW and my own.

Laura - Never tried freezing the fuel belt bottles but I would think that would work ok, especially in the summer.

Natasha - Thanks for starting us this week.

    Everyone enjoy your weekend.

    Peace,
    Les

    Saturday - mixed blessings

Hey gang - had a great run today. There were mixed blessings associated with it though.
    On the positive side:
+ The trail wasn't in too bad a condition and relatively dried out. A good thing because with a lack of rain the mud becomes VERY STICKY and no fun to run in (and it doesn't splash up on your legs )
+ Felt strong after taking yesterday off - good to know that, at least at this early stage, I can recover quickly.
+ Bought "new scooters" today (see the negatives).
    On the negative side:
    - 11-ish turned into about 16. I don't need to log miles now - they will come soon enough.
    - My knees were complaining most of the day. My fault - I was still running in shoes that I should have replaced last week. I could only make about 2.5 miles without having to stop and stretch.
    - I have tweaked both knees. Hopefully with a little ice and NSAID I will be okay.

New scooters are Asics Gel Cumulus V's. I've been running in Cumulus III's for a while (hated Cumulus IV's). We'll have to see if the shoes will really be good to me come Monday.

Hope everyone had a great weekend and I'll check you again tomorrow.

    Ciao,
    Les

P.S. in case you didn't notice - I don't listen to my own advice well - everyone can ping on me if I don't follow through on my advice.

    Hi all!

Laura, your marathoning friend sounds amazing -- 4 kids and all that running, wow! That being said, you and Mary and Lisa and the other women on this thread who manage to run and have a family with kids are also an inspiration to me! Hats off to you all.

Laura, about keeping your water cool, you might want to consider filling the bottles halfway (or even more) with ice cubes, and the rest with water. The ice cubes make a bit of noise rattling around, but soon enough they melt.

Les, sorry to hear about the knee problems. How are the knees today? What is NSAID? I feel like I should know but can't seem to figure it out. I'm a bit confused -- you like the trails when they are muddy, right? I can understand that. It's kinda fun to go out and get all muddy and feel like a kid again!

I went for my long run today (well, long for me right now). I did 14 km (so almost 9 miles) and it was fun for the most part, but humid. I went through a litre of water. My right leg protested gently here and there. Thank goodness I'm getting the new orthotics soon. After I break those in, it'll be time to (gasp) get new shoes again. Saucony has put out two new Grid shoes, including a new Grid Stabil for pronators, so I guess I'll check it out while I still have a bit of mileage left on these ones. At least that's the plan -- what do you want to bet I'll put it off until the shoes are on their last leg, the way I usually do.

Well, my husband is back from his long exercise for the day (road biking) so I'm going to see how his ride was. See you all later!

    To explain

Ditto here - I have enough trouble juggling two adult schedules let alone trying to add kids schedules too. My hat's off to all of you who have to balance your running and family times. LW is very forgiving of my time on the trails.

NSAID - non-steroidal Anti-inflammatory drugs. Typically Motrin, Tylenol, and Aleve (as well as their generic kin). I'm not sure they include aspirin but that would technically count being non-steroidal.
I love running on muddy trails, at least during long runs. But they can't be bog-like mud but mud puddles. YES - like being a kid all over again. (That'd be me!)
Rest (and a little ice last night) did wonders for my knees today. But tomorrow will be the test - first run after the over-use injury (or strain). Scheduled for 4 x 800 m repeats for speed (abot 6:18 min per mile). That will certainly let me know if I've done anything bad to my knees.

Glad to hear that you got a good run in. It sounds like you are in the same boat I am/was - time to change out shoes. Hope the new Saucony work as well as the old ones.

Hope everyone's weekend was safe and productive.

    Peace,

I went 10 miles yesterday!! It was a tough trail with the first mile, being up hill at about a 5% grade, and basically rolling hills the rest of the way (except for the mile down).

I have a new ache -- while I was running I just that this sensation of my muscle pulling from my inner thigh through my lower abdomen. Nothing painful, just noticeable. I was telling my running partner that each time we venture farther, my body keeps giving me new little aches to deal with. On the upside, I got some body glide for my feet, and it kept my blisters in check.

About running and having kids -- I ordered the kids a pizza last night while I was out and then came home and played Scrabble with them, but they both beat me. I figured it was that I was so tired, I couldn't think of words (plus I got stuck with the "Q" and never drew a "U" the entire game! )

Thanks for all the race wishes, everyone! It was definitely a fun race and fun weekend. I didn't PR, but had a good time anyway. The weather, which is usually so hot & humid that DH & I call it the "stinky race," was really, really good. DH got severe leg cramps around mile 2, so I hung back for a bit while he stretched a few times. Then, he just told me to go ahead without him. While I didn't mind that, I think I was distracted and never really pushed my pace. I was about 3 minutes off of my time for last year. Oh well. It's so hilly and crowded (19,000 people) that we don't really run it for time anyway. Got to watch the elite runners, since it's an out and back course. I didn't know the 2 Kenyans who won, but Meb Keflighi (sp?) came in third. I also got to see Catherine Nedbera (sp?) run by, along with Colleen De Reuck and Joan Benoit Samuelson.

After checking out the jazz festival afterwards (free w/your race bib!), we went back to FIL's, drank wine all night and watched the Tour de France. The strange thing is that Sunday when we got home, decided to go for a bike ride and I had one of my best, strongest rides ever. That definitely tells me that I didn't run hard enough! (I should've been sore, right??)

Interesting to hear how people juggle kids & training. I can't even imagine it.

Laura - I had no idea your husband was a former Olympian. Wow!

Les - your knees sound painful! be careful out there.

    Q & U and the bix

Laura - Both Q & U... how unlucky. But it sounds like you had a tester of a run. Hope you're still feeling okay after all those weird hills.

Susan - Great race even if you didn't have a PR. It's also good of you to hang back with DH when he cramped up. I'm also happy that he sent you ahead so he didn't have too much of an adverse impact on your race. Aren't the elite runners something else? I had the opportunity to see the elites at the Inaugural Rock 'n Roll half-marathon in Va. Beach a couple years ago and the elites at the Miami Tropical Marathon in Feb - such effortless running. Maybe some day... (YEAH Right!)

Missed running at lunch but that may not be a bad thing - it was fairly hot. But the down side is now I've got to work in after work (AGAIN ).

Have a great week all and be careful out there.

Laura, Sorry about the new ache. Bleh. Did it stick with you after the run or did it go away after you cooled down a little? I don't freeze the bottles in my fuel belt (don't mind it a little lukewarm, feels like less of a shock to my stomach when I'm running), but I don't see why you couldn't. Your 10 miler sounds like it was fun, though. I love trail running!!! DH's cousins are super competitive Scrabble players and could probably have told you how to use a Q no U, but I'm always at a loss when it comes to that one.

Susan, the race sounds like it was fun. And a free jazz fest after and everything! Too bad you didn't feel like you gave it your all, but it sounds like you had a good time out there anyway.

Les, is the knee in check? Let us know how it feels with the new shoes. And let us know what you think of the IV's.

And as always, I'm in awe of anyone who manages to get anything done with kids in tow. DH is hard enough to get situated, I can't even imagine having him and kids, too. Whew. I'd never make it out the door.

I'll probably be around less for the next few weeks (I've been around less lately in general). We're moving (2 miles to the west) on the 15th and I'm packing my butt off. We've hired movers to do the actual lifting and hauling, but are packing ourselves. Well, I'm packing. DH has chosen to let me do all the work . Anyway, it's more exhausting than I thought it would be. Consequently, some of my runs have suffered. But my form and speed are still improving by leaps and bounds, and I must say I'm happy about that. The bridge that used to take 9min 20sec to reach now takes a touch under 8 minutes. Yay! And I feel stronger in general. I'll be so glad after we get our moved squared away, though, and I can focus on the run instead of running while going through packing lists in my head.

Thumbs up Knees and new scooters

Here to report a good run this evening - even though it was after work. Happy to report that (1) the knees check out okay - one stop at about 19 minutes into the run to retie my shoes (always have to retie new scooters during the first couple runs) - and no issues! (2) The new Scooters Asics Gel Cumulus V feel great. But I'll withold judgement until I get a couple more miles on them. One run does not make a good pair of shoes. Speed workout tomorrow - the next test.

Best of luck on the move. DH - leaving you to do all the packing... as Marvin the Martian would say "that makes me very angry" (speaking as a man in this family). Congrats on the improvement in running and strength - way to go!

    Be good to yourselves,

    Hi guys,

Sorry I don't have time to read through the whole thread thoroughly. I just wanted to check in from vacation. I'm in Salem, Oregon today, and the weather is just gorgeous (although it is supposed to hit a record high of 100+ today ).

I got in a great 4-mile run in Eugene yesterday morning on Prefontaine's trail. At about 9:00, it was in the high 60s, sunny, with a nice cool breeze blowing off the river. I couldn't have asked for a better morning.

I'm hoping to get in at least one more run this week, probably in Sunriver. Hope everyone is having a great week.

    Unhappy

I didn't run the R2P last weekend. It's a long story that has more to do with the family dynamic (and my mom's control issues), so I'll spare you all the details. Suffice it to say that it was not my decision and I am very disappointed.

We're enjoying (?) some suffocating weather here, as Eva noted. I'm hoping to get to the track tonight for some run/walk action…if the temp drops below, say, 90, right after the sun sets. It's nauseatingly hot for a heat wimp like myself. I visited newrunner.com , the Runner's World novice runner site, and picked up some inspiration and a new run plan. I've decided to start back at square one with a run/walk plan in order to baby my injury. Paired with some cross training during the week to maintain my overall fitness level, the run/walk plan should get me back on track. I'll pick a goal race when I'm sure that the shins won't pull any tricks on me.

    Hi all!

Jen, my sympathies about moving. I hate moving! But congrats as well. I seem to recall you saying that you really wanted to move out of where you were living, so you must be excited about the change.

Amanda, hi! Sorry to hear about your weekend but I think your plan for easing back into running is an inspired one. Good luck!

Eva, thanks for checking in from vacation to let us know how it's going!! Glad to hear that you're enjoying it (despite the heat). That run on Prefontaine's trail sounds gorgeous. I'll have to put that on my list of must-run places.

Les, very good to hear that so far so good with the new shoes! How did the speed workout go?

    Hello to everyone else!

I did abs and weights the other day and today did intervals on the elliptical at the gym. I pushed myself to get in some good cardio and was pretty pleased with it. Tomorrow I hope to run. We are planning to go on a canoe trip this long weekend (it's a long weekend in Ontario) and I'm excited!! We're going to one of our favourite provincial parks of all. Some parts of the park are very remote, and we plan to stay in the really remote parts to the extent possible. Anyway, hope it's fun as usual! Sorry to get off topic. I'm done now.

    Good night, everyone!

    New scooters - day 2

Eva - Running in the great PacNorthwest... those are the days that I remember fondly. Haven't ever run in Eugene but spent many hours on the road a little north of there in Corvallis and of course in Portland (in-laws) and Tigard (cousins).

Amanda - Sorry to hear about the run I know how much you were looking forward to it. Peace to you as you deal with the cause of the tension and I hope you find a great workout routine to get back into the swing of things.

Natasha - Enjoy the long weekend in the park (at those VERY REMOTE place ). Sounds like you've got a wonderful weekend planned? Anything special besides the official long weekend?

Day 2 of the new scooters - pleased as punch with the speed workout this evening. Did 4 x 800m on about 3:28 pace. Finished strong and made all the repeats. The big thing is no issues with ankles, knees, feet or shoes. I think I've found a good match!!

Be careful out there - the rest of the week looks pretty messy most of those places that we live.

    Peace,
    Les

Eva - I'll take that weather any day over what we have here. Although we're all supposed to be happy because a cloud front is coming in and MAYBE the temperature will be only 99.

Susan - I checked out a web link to the Bix race and I still have a silly question. Like, where exactly is it held? The site never said. But it sounds like a cool race.

Did Wharf to Wharf on Sunday. It was absolutely gorgeous. The friend I was with is a walker and doesn't run so we race walked it. Actually came in just under an hour and a half for 6 miles, so I figure we were doing better than 15 minute miles. This one I will definitely do again. We were supposed to meet our friends at the end but after half an hour of looking couldn't find them. The only complaint I have is with the transportation back. While they had a number of buses, the line was at least 1/2 mile long.

Mary - not a silly question....I think a lot of websites do that. I have a lot of race t-shirts, too, that don't mention the location (pet peeve of mine). Anyway, it's in Davenport, Iowa. The main sponsor is the Quad City Times newspaper, but you've pretty much got to live in Iowa to know where the Quad Cities are.

Glad you liked Wharf to Wharf! What a great friend to walk with your buddy. It's definitely a highly social race, so that sounds great for you guys.

I've been procrastinating my run all day. Don't know why. I know I'll be way happy once I'm out the door. Ok....off to stretch right now...I promise!

    Hello,

Well I procrastinated running until close to 10 am this morning and it was super hot. I know most of you are probably having super hot weather but it was a 100 yesterday which is a first this year, I think I may have to start getting up early to run before 8 am or wait till the sun starts to set. The weather guy here says it's going to be hot for the rest of the month, needless to say I cut my run short today as it was too hot to run long distance today. Okay enough complaining about the weather.

Natasha is the park you are going to Algonquin? I have never been you will have to tell us all about the canoe trip sounds like a blast.

Les glad your new shoes are working out well, my new shoes and I are best friends I tried new shoes this time too, I usually like to stick to the same old same old type of shoes.

Well hope you are all staying cool!

    Hi folks!

Les, whoo hoo on the new shoes! Sounds like you have found yourself a winning pair. You must be so pleased (and relieved). Did you try them out again after the speed workout?

Michelle, you got it! We are going to Algonquin. My husband and I have each been going there since childhood and both love the park dearly. So we are looking forward to going back. Will certainly let you know how it is! Good to hear that your new shoes are working well for you too. What kind do you have?

Mary, W2W sounds like it was a blast. Good to hear!

I went out and did a little over 4 miles tonight, a while after dinner. It was good for the most part though there were a couple of challenging moments pretty early on (you know, a tiny bit of tough slogging). But those moments fortunately passed quickly and the run got stronger and stronger. A fun time overall!!

    See you all later.

    New shoes day three

Natasha - Had a great run again today. A little heavy legged (third run in three days) to start with but got into the swing. Still no issues and today's run was a Tempo run - start easy for about 5 minutes then increase to 10k speed for about 300-400m in the middle then taper back and finish with about 5 minutes of easy running. Worked about 60 minutes and felt great. Tomorrow's run will be the capper - 6 miles at race pace. That one on top of the other three this week will be the final test of the shoes.
Algonquin sound slike a lot of fun. I'm jealous.

Michelle - Almost 100 in Seattle - YUK! That's gotta be miserable considering it never gets that hot there. Thinking cooling thoughts for you!

Have a great evening and a fabulous Thursday.
    Au revoir,
    Les

Whew thankfully it is a lot cooler this morning, probably in the low 80's with a nice cool breeze, those cooling thoughts must have worked Les, thanks . I was able to get out and do the longer run that I wanted to do yesterday. My long run is around 45 minutes right now and it felt great. No cramps this week yet, I figured out that I shouldn't have anything before I go or wait at least an hour before I go and then I'm good for my run.

Natasha I have Brooks Adrenaline (which is a new brand for me since I usually stick to Adidas). So far they seem to be great shoes, no complaints here. Have a great time!

How is everyone elses week going?

I'll say that now that I've done all the major running events in my new shoes I think I've made a good choice. Did 6 miles at race pace today at lunch and am still feeling fine - albeit tired but fine.

Michelle - Glad to be of assistance with the cool weather. Glad that you got a good run in today too.

I'm ready to take a break tomorrow - 4 days of running in a row is plenty!

    Happy trails to all,
    Les

Hello Everyone, I am new to the whole running experience, but read a quote in CL a couple of months ago that got me tuned in to this group. I have only been running since May, and my goal is to complete my first 5k before I turn 30 in October. I am confident that I am ready, just don't really know what to expect. Your messages have been inspirational and I hope to one day build up to the lengthy runs most of you complete. Any advice to someone very green to the running world is greatly appreciated.

WELCOME NinNin!! It's always great to have new runners on the board. I hope that we can continue to provide inspiration for you as you start running.

I won't ask too many questions now - just wondering what types of curfaces you run on and how frequently you run. And don't worry about distances that you run - we all started at the beginning at one point in time and it's taken a lot of years and miles to get to the point where we are in out running efforts.

Look forward to seeing you tread the boards in the future.

    Peace,
    Les

I would like to echo Les' welcome: Welcome, NinNin!!!

More later, but I'm scrambling to get everything done before the canoeing expedition begins. I hope everyone has a wonderful weekend. Catch you Monday night or Tuesday, with any luck.

    Take care,
    Natasha

    Welcome Nin Nin!!

Hey gang well I tried yet another new trail today that runs around the Microsoft campus. It was a great long run and now I am three for three so am happy with that. It was a great run out there and am considering doing a 5 km that is coming up in August. We'll see how things go. My trusty companion started to tire around the six km mark so had to coax the last one out but that's okay we were just out for a nice leisurely run.

I won't be around for the weekend so hope you all have a good one. Talk to you all on Monday I suspect.

I just realized I haven't posted at all this week.

I've been running. Nothing remarkable. Just the usual.

Welcome to the group, Nin Nin, we'll look forward to you joining us.

    Friday evening and...

Michelle - Where is the Microsoft campus? North side of Seattle? Or more towards Bellevue? It's been such a terribly long time since I've been to Seattle I don't know where all the "good" places are anymore (ok - the last time I spent more than 3 days in greater Seattle was December 1987. OMG am I that old???)

Torential downpour this evening - had standing water in the back yard in less than 5 minutes. But on the up side it only rained for about 15 so... All bets are off for tomorrow's long run. Taking a step back and only running 8 (unless I go shepherding again which I doubt my coach will let me do). Probably the right distance to run considering how heavy my legs feel today.

    Pleasant dreams all.
    Les
