Just wondering if anyone made the Salisbury Steak on the cover of the Jan/Feb. issue?? We all seemed to wait so long for this issue , I'm surprised no one has reviewed it yet???

There were a few reviews of it earlier--most favorable, as I recall. Here's a link to one:

Leonard, I made it on Tuesday night and I thought it was very good for a change. Usually prepare chicken and fish. My husband wasn't enamored with it.....called it glorified hamburger patties. But I liked the sauce that went with it very well. I think it would be better with mashed potatoes, due to the sauce. Let me know when you make it what you think. LaurieC
I made these last week and actually loved them. Then, with the leftovers I made homemade tv dinners (with a modified red mashed potato recipe). My husband will be on a 3pm - 11pm shift for 3 weeks and I have high hopes that these tv dinners will be a solution to the age old question "what to cook for just me". I'll let you know how they turn out.
I just made it tonight and liked it! Any easy recipe that my husband and both kids eat gets a "thumbs up" from me. You could add some seasonings to the ground beef mixture if you desire. It was quite easy. I found it didn't take 10 minutes for the sauce to reduce to my liking at the end. I served it with egg noodles (which my kids prefer to roasted potatoes) and cooked carrots.
I made this last night, too, as we had 1 pound of venison leftover in the fridge. It was okay. I'd probably make it again, but mostly because it was so easy. It worked well with the ground venison since it was cooked in liquid so the meat stayed quite moist. I made mashed potatoes and sauteed some broccoli with olive oil to go along with it. I sure do like the egg noodle idea, though. I'll have to try that next time. All salisbury steak really is, as someone else pointed out, is glorified hamburger, but it's a nice change from a regular burger. A little more gourmet.
This is great!! I told my husband he was semi-famous on the CL Bulletin board for coming up with his description of "glorified hamburger patty". He thought it was funny. Now he's worried about how he rates my recipes....doesn't want to be quoted again. I think it's a blast!! Keep up the good work. Cook On! LaurieC
I finally made this last night. I wish I had seen this thread first -- I would have spiced up the patties a bit with salt, pepper, maybe a little garlic. Despite that, we liked it -- the sauce especially -- and gave it a 7 out of 10. I served it with rice last night, but next time I'll serve with mashed potatoes. I think with more seasoned patties and mashed potatoes, this would bump up to an 8 for us.
MrsReber -- making this with venison sounds yummy. Wish I had some!![]()
I may get adventurous and try it someday. Having grown up in the 1960's, Salisbury Steak has always scared me because of those Swanson frozen dinners (the salisbury steak was the worst one!:eekand the coffee shop style restaurants where this was a specialty along with deep fried shrimp. Salisbury steak has always been like a "mystery meat surprise".
Wendy, I understand the apprehension with salisbury steak. I always think of those school lunches in second grade!!
Beth, my husband mixes pork in with the venison when he makes chopmeat so it added some good flavor to the patties, but I like your idea of spicing them up a bit. I think mashed potatoes are a must with this dish since it has such a delicious sauce! I am waiting for the new supply of meat- hubby got five deer so far (most of them were very good size for NJ) and he has three or four more weeks to go before the end of the season. I hope to try some new venison recipes this year with the roasts and steaks since I can't even tolerate the smell of hubby's "stand-by" marinade.

You cracked me up with the comment on those awful TV dinners. I grew up never eating one of those and remember shopping with my mom and asking her to buy them. She explained that with 6 kids she couldn't afford to buy them because if my dad had ever found them in the freezer he would have thrown them out! When I finally moved out I bought some and then threw them out after having tasted them!
Sneezles, I'm laughing about you asking for those TV dinners. I did the same thing with my mom and hamburger helper. I actually complained about never having tried it and so she made it one time and I never complained again. I haven't eaten it since.
I think I was going through some kind of I'm 14 and want to be just like everyone else thing.Thank goodness I'm cured!
Christine: I was wondering if you could share how you set up your frozen dinners? I work three nights a week and would like to start making homemade frozen dinners for myself (to take to work) and my husband (to have at home) on the nights I work. What kind of containers did you use? Did you just do the entree or all the sides, too?
TIA! Linda
Mrs. R & Sneezles, I understand what you are both saying,
Sneezles, you should count your blessingsthat your family could not afford the frozen dinners for your family. My parents divorced when I was 3 and my Mother was not a cook, although she thought she could. No fault of ther own, as she didn't have time! Thank God for Grandma!
Mrs. R, thank you for mentioning school lunches, it was the thing that I didn't think of among the old style cuisine.
BTW: another one of my food fears is of pork chops, because Grandma (mentioned as a wonderful cook in some areas , but not all areas) would reduce them to shoe leather!
I thank God that my memories of Grandma although some are much better than others, as she was ahead of her time in a few areas of cooking. Grandma also didn't make salisbury steak!

bumping up this extremely old thread because we made these tonight and I had forgotten how easy and good they were!
I used all turkey meat, though, and used the herbed breadcrumbs. There was not a bit of this left....the kids ate every bite. Woohoo!
It's kind of cool to try older things once in a while and re-review them for the sake of newer readers; at least, I like hearing about older recipes, even if I'm not really a new CL-er. Especially if it's a recipe I missed when it was first printed.![]()
