Is there an easy way to water the Christmas Tree?

As I once again lay down on the floor and watched as half of the water went into the tree holder and the other half dribbled down the side onto the floor, I thought, "I bet someone on Cooking Light has the answer!"

    Well?

    The dog????
You can't drink rum on the beach all day if you don't start in the morning.

    Use an AquaFir?

    Or, a Christmas Tree IV.

I suppose you could buy some flexible tubing and a funnel and find some way to attach and hide it. I did a search for a possible Heloise tip and came up with nadda.

Last year we got a long plastic funnel (maybe 4 feet long?) that you can put in the Christmas tree stand, and it sticks out through the branches. The funnel is attached to a hollow tube, so you can just pour water in the top. It even came with a dipstick so we could check the water level. I'll see if I can find a picture and post it.

I think we got it at the place we bought our tree, and I have also seen them at Home Depot. It couldn't have been very expensive, or I would still be laying on the floor to water the tree.

Editing to add a picture of what we have:

This isn't a great picture, but maybe you can get the idea. I found it at Brookstone and it says it is $9.95.

DebMG, I am so glad you asked this and I love your answer, clairea!!! We got a real tree this year after our old fake one finally died after 15+ years of wonderful service so we are pretty clueless on an easy way to water.

    thanks for the thread

We're using a wine decanter. It works very well! That, or maybe one of those Good Season's Italian salad dressing cruets.

you feed your tree wine?! LOL. Maybe a little bubbly will keep it fresh longer, eh?

Actually...I AM looking for a way to keep my tree fresh longer. I remember last year there was a Martha Stewart recipe floating around. Some mixture of things besides just water to help keep it fresh. Does anyone have tips for that??

    Claire,

Thank you! It got one of those things you posted about. That's so much easier. Our tree stand has a resovior, but after the first year I haven't been able to get it to work.

While browsing on QVC earlier, I came across this:

    Item Number H81476
Battery Operated Automatic Tree Watering System

    QVC Price $13.50
    Shipping and Handling $4.47
Save! Buy two or more and save on shipping and handling.

Keep your Christmas tree well-watered this season with an automatic, battery-operated system. A tube runs along the trunk and into a watering stand. Just hang the ornament on your tree, position the tube, and enjoy the Christmas carols that play as you fill the reservoir! A LED indicator on the ornament flashes when it's time to refill.

    Measures approximately 5-1/2" x 8-1/2"H.

    Santa Claus or Snowman.

    Made in China.

I'd never seen such a thing before.

    Cool

Hey, I like that funnel thing.

On the other hand, I've grown strangely fond of sneaking up on our tree commando-style on my belly, armed with my trusty long-nosed watering can. The funnel would probably ruin my fun.

I know. Simple pleasures for simple minds...
