Thread: is there a good substitute for shallots??

Question is there a good substitute for shallots??

Help! My grocery store is totally out of shallots! Is there anything else that will work (I'm cooking "Ed's" :-) Port Wine Mushroom Sauce and filet mignons)? Maybe green onions (the bulb) or regular onions? I need this for dinner tonight! Eeek! Thanks in advance,
    Leigh

I would try leeks. They are more mild then green onions.

Shallots are in the onion family, but they taste uniquely like a mix of onion and garlic. If I didn't have them for a recipe, I would probably substitute regular onions, rather than green onions. I would also add garlic to the recipe if it didn't call for it already, or add a bit more if it did. But I would probably try another grocery store or two before I gave up!!! (But I'm like that!!! )

Guess you didn't notice-- when Ed made this, he didn't have shallots and green onions were what he went with!

Dunno that I'd always make that substitution for shallots, but it worked for Ed, so I say give it a try!

    Good luck!

According to the Food Companion the white part of the green onion is a good substitute for shallots.
