    Junk Food

The discussion on "enough already" about all the diets made me think of this article on today's CNN. It appears no matter how many diets are out there, and how much we know about how we SHOULD eat, as a nation, we still eat cr*p.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) -- Junk foods such as sugary sodas and chips make up nearly one-third of calories in the U.S. diet, researchers said.

A study of 4,700 adults showed that, despite the increased popularity of low-carbohydrate diets, soft drinks and pastries pile on more calories in the daily diet than anything else.

"What is really alarming is the major contribution of 'empty calories' in the American diet," said Gladys Block, a professor of epidemiology and public health nutrition at the University of California, Berkeley, who led the study.

Writing in the June issue of the Journal of Food Chemistry and Analysis, Bock and colleagues said that sweets and desserts, soft drinks and alcoholic beverages account for nearly 25 percent of all calories consumed by Americans.

Salty snacks and fruit-flavored drinks add another five percent.

"We know people are eating a lot of junk food, but to have almost one-third of Americans' calories coming from those categories is a shocker. It's no wonder there's an obesity epidemic in this country," Bock said in a statement.

Bock used data from a U.S. government survey called the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. She analyzed the answers of 4,760 adults interviewed in 1999 and 2000.

They were asked to report all the foods they ate in the previous 24 hours.

Sodas contributed 7.1 percent of the total calories eaten. Sweets topped the list, followed by hamburgers, pizza and potato chips.

"It's important to emphasize that sweets, desserts, snacks and alcohol are contributing calories without providing vitamins and minerals," said Block.

"In contrast, such healthy foods as vegetables and fruit make up only 10 percent of the caloric intake in the U.S. diet. A large proportion of Americans are undernourished in terms of vitamins and minerals," Block added.

"You can actually be obese and still be undernourished with regard to important nutrients. We shouldn't be telling people to eat less -- we should be telling people to eat differently."
Work is the ruin of the drinking classes.

I hardly even drink soda. I seem to drink it when I can't get decent bottled water out. Water is just about all I drink at work and at home, with occasional orange juice.

Let's see- I do succumb to salty snacks, but usually fat free pringles or rice cakes and not even all that often.

What I'm troubled by is the fact that they list "hamburgers" among the bad food choices. That's not necessarily true. Guess it all depends on where you get your burger and how big it is.

I ate way too much crap last Saturday. I felt awful on Sunday. I wonder why most people don't seem to make that connection. DH and I both felt it so we went back to our normal, healthy, well balanced meals. It made all the difference in the world.

I wish I knew what the answer was. I just heard on the news this morning that NJ schools are going to partner with (I think) Blue Cross/Blue Shield in providing educational sessions for school children. They're going to teach them how to be healthy, how their bodies use food, etc. I can only hope that it helps.
Wouldn't you like to be a Susan, too?

    That's good!

My boss is always offering me crap to eat, unless I tell him I'm on a diet. Then if I choose to eat junk on my own, he decides I'm off my diet and brings me candy bars, etc.

The most interesting thing with this study is it should look at our grocery stores. I'm amazed at how much floor space in a typical grocery store is dedicated to just those things: pop, snacks, pastries, white bread, and sugary cereals. Take a look the next time you shop....

Man, I was doing fine on that list until they threw beer on it.
"Is ice hockey hard? I don't know, you tell me. We need to have the strength and power of a football player, the stamina of a marathon runner and the concentration of a brain surgeon. But, we need to put all this together while moving at high speeds on a cold and slippery surface while 5 other guys use clubs to try and kill us. Oh, yeah, did I mention that this whole time we're standing on blades 1/8 of an inch thick. Is ice hockey hard? I don't know, you tell me. Next question."

I posted previously that the high school I work at is going to get rid of all junk food next year, which I think is a great idea, and about time! But what I find interesting is that when the teachers and staff found out that there would be no more sodas, they had a fit! So now there will be sodas served to staff, only.
