    Spanish chorizo

Anyone know where I can find Spanish chorizo? The chorizo I grew up with, mexican-style chorizo, is in just about every store I go to. Not so for the firm Spanish chorizo. I did a search on google, and Zingerman's has it. Hmmm...is that the only way I can get this stuff? I also found some recipes for it, but I'm not so keen on making it...would like to just be able to purchase it.
    Suggestions appreciated

When we did our Spanish Supperclub we ordered all the paella supplies including the Chorizo from Tienda.com

I didn't have any problems with that company and they have a couple of different types to choose from (Domestic and imported, small links, etc.)

I am sure you will have luck with Zingerman's, they always have great service and top notch quality. (We just went to the deli for dinner last night (my first time eating at the deli). Didn't have much time to shop and they were crowded!! Did get some fresh bread though.

Also, sometimes they have the spanish style prepackaged at grocery stores or gourmet stores, I know I found Andouille sausage and they had Chorizo in a package that looks like Kilbasa (sp?) at our Nino Salvaggios when I needed Andouille for another supper club dish.

    Cool

My apologies, but I've forgotten what part of the state you're in. Inland, Central Valley..? Around very large metropolitan areas, I'd check the Yellow Pages for International Grocers and make a few phone calls.

Thanks for the tienda.com link, Lisa. Have bookmarked that one!

Gail, I'm in Fresno. Do you think I could find it at a local deli, Whole Foods?

    Lisa, thanks for your ideas.

I kind of doubt it, but you never know... I'd certainly check it out. It's just that with California's heavy Mexican and Central American population, most places which carry chorizo are liable to carry Mexican chorizo (and nasty, gristly chorizo at that.)

I just checked AnyWho and see a couple of listings in Fresno for sausage. You might phone them and ask if they happen to carry it (long shot, but you never know...)

Di, I think maybe what you're looking for is the stuff that Emeril calls "chaurice" from Portugal? It's a firmer spicy sausage thats smoked. The Riverdale, Hanford area might have something like that. Large Portuguese contingent out there.

    Hmmmm....Darrell hasn't tried that one!

    See you tonight!

The chorizo from Tienda were excellent. I also found Goya chorizos package of 4 at my local GIant store (where cheeses and other refrigerated things are (deli).

Do you have any Spanish tapas restaurants in your area? Here in Chicago we can get pretty much any Spanish item at one of the restaurants - they have a small Spanish deli/grocery store to one side of the restaurant. But I would bet that even a restaurant that doesn't normally sell retail items would be willing to sell you (or tell you where to get) a few items. Good luck.

Thanks for the information on Tienda. Several years ago I visited the Dominican Republic and they served chrorizo with beer in some of the bars. It was sooo good and I have been trying to find the chorizo locally but could only find the Mexican Chorizo which I hate.

I found some at Whole Foods! It was packaged by other smoked sausages. Thanks everyone for your suggestions, and for those in the central valley, now you know where to find it if you're interested

Well, that made things easy, didn't it? Good find.
