Post Update on my auto repair issues

Just thought I'd give an update on my vehicle situation as the other thread was waaay too long. I promise to make this post shorter.

I filed a 3 page complaint with the BAR (Bureau of Automobile Repair) on the 2nd of the month and received an acknowledgment and case number. They handle the complaints in the order received. Since my registration is due on Monday, I called and followed up w/the BAR. The person assigned to my case said that he had 15 ahead of mine and told me to contact the DMV to see if I could get a smog extension.

After hanging on for 15 minutes, the clerk told me that I needed to pay my fee 1st (I did so online), wait 3 days, call them and request a smog extension. This morning, I called again, held 15 minutes only to have the clerk tell me that I could get one with AAA or go to one of their offices (no thank you!!) because it would take 2 to 4 weeks for them to send me one. Of course, the 1st clerk didn't tell me that.

After hanging on for 10 minutes to verify this with AAA, she told me that I needed to have a smog failure notice 1st. After giving her the Reader's Digest version, she got worked up and told me to contact the manufacturer and I told her I did. Anyway, she got me worked up, which isn't taking much today as I am at the mercy of my hormones and have a respiratory infection for which I am taking antibiotics.

Not wanting to waste my devil may care attitude, I called the local customer service rep. who was supposedly working with the dealership over my issue and gave him the brief synopsis and told him that it is unfortunate that nothing has been done. No followups, etc. He asked for my VIN or case number. I told him that I had neither by my side at the moment, and he told me that he couldn't help me until I gave him those. I told him that I believed that he really could find the information if he mentioned my name to his friends at the dealership and to guess what I did? When he said what, I told him that I filed a complaint with the BAR. Then he asked if it meant that I no longer wanted my car fixed? I told him that I did it because I wanted my car fixed and I felt that they were playing the let the warranty run out so I would go away game. He immediately said that that they don't do that around there, and we ended the conversation. I want to know how quickly they will move now. If I'm feeling generous later, I may call his voicemail and leave the information and let him know that if they work on it the week that I am on vacation, I will cancel the complaint after the work has been completed, but the voices in my head are telling me that he may not need it. Thanks for listening.

sheesh! That could get me worked up just reading about it! Such a bummer you're having to deal with all this. I'm sure it's true that so often we shrug our shoulders and let "professionals" off the hook for not doing their job. I don't think I even knew there was a BAR. Hopefully I'll never have to ask you advice on dealing with them, right? Hang in there, it just sounds so frustrating.
Oh, and take care of yourself too. I hope you feel better soon.

    Smile Bumping up: Good news!

    Thanks Katie!

I ended up taking it in to get smogged on my way home on Thursday so I could get the fail notice to proceed. The guys told me 20 minutes. I went back in 30 and it still wasn't ready. I told the one guy that it wasn't going to pass anyway and that I needed the notice. When he asked me why, I told him the shortened version of the story and that I had filed a complaint. Although he was very hard to understand, he told me that my particular type of vehicle is notorious for having bad software in the computer.

After 45 minutes, it failed, and he told me that they were going to put it on their other machine. I told him that it wasn't necessary and I really needed to go. He then made a phone call and mentioned my type of vehicle. Five minutes later, another technician came in and told me that in the past, they have had certain types of vehicles (mine included) that had computer problems and it would fail with machine #1. After letting it rest for 10 minutes, they put it on machine #2 and it passed. This happened in my case!

These guys are my heroes! They stayed 1 hour after closing, they had 2 machines, didn't charge for the 2nd test, and they knew the quirks of my vehicle type. These guys deserve a batch of cookies for their efforts.

I am still going to pursue my complaint, because the dealership and company have been jerks, and I don't want them to get away with it, and if I try this again in 2 years, it may not pass, or if I sell it, it will not be fair to the buyer. It is just nice to know that it is no longer urgent and I have the time to wait it out.

Thanks for listening to my venting and long threads.

Oh, I'm glad you at least have the pressure keg off your shoulders. I bet those guys would love and be floored by a batch of cookies. And I agree with keeping after the problem and the dealer. At least now it's more principle that crisis.

    YAY!
Phew <hand across forehead> Glad that part of the saga is a happier side at least. Also glad I don't have to worry about getting "smogged" in my area

    TG Wendy!!

Don't let up on those tur$s at the dealership or the manufacturer. You still need that matter fixed and they still haven't done that.

PS: Maybe just hide the fact that the car passed smog??

I'm glad the car passed smog. I hope you can get your car fixed soon. I hate evil dealership people.
