Question Poll: Favorite products which have been discontinued

Jewel's comment about low-fat Velveeta in the Cheesy Chicken Chowder thread got me thinking about this one (and getting a little steamed, too!). How many of us have found wonderful products, purchased them regularly and faithfully, only to search frantically when they are no longer on the market? I am currently miffed at the Tostitos people. They had a yummy low-fat chip, I think it was "Cheesy Quesedilla" that my DH and I were addicted to. We also liked their roasted garlic salsa. Both have disappeared in the Allentown area. So who has deserted you???

So I'm not the only one, huh? Healthy Choice is the one that has me steamed. They discontinued their LowFat String Cheese. Only 1 gram of fat, and a perfect snack on the go, compared to 6 grams of fat for the regular string cheese! HC also discontinued their line of fatfree cream cheese, in a flavor of Garlic 'n Herb, with was to die for! I also can no longer find Fleischmann's NonFat squeeze margarine, my DH and I loved it on bread or veggies. Lowfat chocolate chips are another one, but I can't remember the brand that got tossed.

Healthy Choice also used to make a Smoked Sausage that was really nicely spiced, in comparison to most chicken/turkey smoked sausages that seem kinda bland. I used to love making Jambalaya with that. Suddenly, no more HC anywhere! The grocery manager at the one store that used to sell the HC stuff said they're not necessarily discontinued, just not in this region any longer. They pull stuff from the shelves when it doesn't move as fast as they want. Well excuse me, but either advertise this stuff so we know it's out there, or leave it on the shelf long enough for people to discover it and like it!

We should run the food marketing business, shouldn't we? I'll be OK until they decide to take my Hormel Turkey Pepperoni away from me. The day I lose my Pepperoni and Lowfat Mozzarella I will be curled up in a corner shaking uncontrollably, while scaring the dog. Heaven help them then...

An interesting thread. I really miss my vegetable storage bags they were great! Bogland discontinued their cranberry salsa, ketchup etc (no tomato) they now have the product but with the addition of tomato (which I am allergic too)One thing which its very hard to find is raspberry chocolate chips around here...
I agree sometimes its a good idea to contact the company since sometimes the product is not discontinued just not purchased by your supermarket or store.

You're kidding me! (I still have a package or two socked away in my pantry... fortunately... do you still have mint chocolate chips?)
Yep. Discontinued. Guess you weren't around when we were whining about that last year and I e-mailed Ziplock to find out for sure. (I've still got a few as well.)

...and yes, I'm still hoarding those mint chips.

Speaking of those granola bars- does anyone remember the yogurt bars? My mom used to buy them and for some reason, I loved them. I don't think they make those anymore. Probably loaded with preservatives, though. Also, I hate to admit this, but I used to get the McLean Deluxe at McDonalds. That's gone. I was sad when they did away with it. At least I didn't feel so bad eating fast food when I knew it was a lower in fat than the other "burgers" they sell. And whatever happened to BooBerry cereal?

I am upset that my Grand Union has been taken over by Stop and Shop. They haven't been re-stocking things until the take over is complete and one thing they didn't have anymore was Pirate's Booty! I just discovered it on this BB and now it's disappeared from my store!! I have my fingers crossed that they re-stock.

Do they still make those reynolds foil bags? My store had them and then they disappeared. Not that it's a big deal to make my own bag out of foil or anything.

Have mint chocolate chips really been discontinued? Or was that just a certain brand? They are an essential ingredient in a merengue cookie I bake!

My favorite discontinued item probably belongs in the "gross things you like to eat column," but I really miss Kraft Miracle French salad dressing. There's nothing like it, in my opinion.

I am sooooo jealous that you get chili cheese fritos!!! (Again, not that I really need to be eating them!)I look for them all the time - when I travel or am on the road or in a new grocery, etc... I haven't seen them in years (maybe 10)!
Ok - where do you live & where do you shop? I am in the southeast & have looked all over TN, GA, & FL. Now that I know that they still exist - I may not rest again until I find them.

Oh - & I just thought of another one. Ragu used to make this jarred pasta sauce that was cheese & tomato. I never ate it over pasta, but it was great as a dip heated with refried beans. All of my friends loved that dip & it was so easy to make. I was sad when I discovered that disappeared.

Susan-I loved those McLean Deluxes too!! I also liked the low-fat tacos that Taco Bell had out a few years ago.

Aside from fast food, I do miss the Healthy Choice cheese. The only kind I can get around here now is the shredded cheddar.

How's this for gourmet - Taco Bell's light menu... bean burritos, etc. I think they did away with their entire light menu.

My two have already been mentioned -- Healthy Choice low fat string cheese and the Ziploc Veggie bags. I think with all the people here mentioning them, they ought to have just been flying off the store shelves!

As for Ziploc veggie bags... I was a fan too. On the website a while back (last year I think) you used to be able to order them directly from SC Johnson Co. (owner of Ziploc)- of course they were considerably more expensive than the store price. I didn't see them mentioned on the website, but I didn't search high and low. Maybe if you send them an e-mail or call.

As for my discontinued product: Quisp Cereal!

Loved that menu! They did get rid of it. That was my favorite fast food that I didn't feel so bad about eating.

Sarah Lee had a chocolate chip bagel that was only 3 grams of fat. That was my treat each day. Some days I'd just have that with some cream cheese for lunch with fruit on the side. No one makes them, when you can find them, the same.

...about those mint chocolate chips...let's put it this way. I have checked N..... (I'm not giving those folks anymore plugs on this board), Hershey, Ghiradelli, Godiva and Guitard's web sites. None lists mint chips in their product line.

...as for the veggie bags. The reply I got back from the maker via e-mail last year was basically "Sorry, but they're no longer available."

I have lots of this stuff.....maybe I'll start a mail order business!
Leanne, I live in Chicago. We have plenty of chili cheese fritos in this town, enough to even send you some if you want!
And we have Thomas' english muffins (I think they are the best) And we have low fat Velveeta.
I wonder how many more items I'd find if I went shopping at Jewel or Dominicks tonight?
Gail-- try looking at the website for Marshall Fields, they might sell Frango mint chips. Their mint choc chip cookies are to die for!

I definitely miss the veggie storage bags!!! I miss the low fat chocolate chips, Healthy Choice smoked sausage. I also miss the M&M Royals, big time!!!! I can't find Salsa Flavred Tostitos anymore either (but then that's one less addiction). And I haven't been able to find Pitter Patter Cookies in eons. Can't even remember who made them, but they were the best peanut butter cookie on the shelf. Sigh!

Nantucket Nectars used to make a mint iced tea that was out of this world good! Haven't seen it in ages. And I never knew the low-fat choc chips existed until I heard on this site that they were discontinued! I was so disappointed because my husband loves anything with choc chips in it but I don't think we should have the full-fat ones on a regular basis.

This is really a good thing, but Ben & Jerry's discontinued two of my favorite flavors: Dastardly Mash, and the peanut-butter ice cream with chocolate chips (Tuskegee Chunk?). It's been many years since I've seen them. Unfortunately, they still make Phish food . . .

I asked the manager at the Publix I shopped at if they could carry Healthy Choice cheese, and he said they stopped carrying it because no one bought it.

I talk about cereal so much I think I should change my screen name! But what about all those crazy cereals? Strawberry Shortcake Cereal? Ice cream cone cereal? Right on with those HC Flakes...those were awsome. Hey, what ever happened to all those different kinds of Twix? Peanutbutter, mint chocolate chip? Long time ago I guess and I'm not even that old! Oh well : )

    Great topic!
Yoplait used to make a fat free fruit on the bottom yogurt that was excellent. I loved to eat the vanilla part first and then the "fruit" (jam ).

Oh, you guys reminded me about the TacoBell (or TacoHe** as my DH puts it) low-fat menu. It took me a while to get over that one. Maybe we should be e-mailing the companies that make stuff we like just as a preventative measure. I loved the garlic-herb HC cream cheese, too. They also made a shredded italian cheese blend with herbs in it that has gone bye-bye. If HC dares to touch my low-fat mint chocolate chip ice cream, there will be problems!

EVERYTHING!!! If I ever get used to something or like it, it doesn't stay around long. More than ANYTHING, I miss Haagen-Dazs Vanilla Sorbet. I tried making my own (using ingredients and nutrition info from the label to devise a recipe), and it was close, but not quite right. I LOVED that stuff! I also miss Haagen-Dazs's plain vanilla and chocolate low fat ice cream. I also liked Mothers large iced Molasses cookies. As a small child, I remember loving some candy or chocolate called Figurines. I also recall enjoying Incredibites and Soda Licious candies. I won't even go into the restaurants I loved that all shut down, but I definitely miss Haagen-Dazs the most!

It also seems that products just don't taste like they used to anymore. The products sold now (even the same ones with the same brand) don't quite match up to the way they used to be.

Oh, I forgot one more -- my favorite candy bar as a kid: Maple Cream Buns. It was a circle instead of a bar, with cream on the bottom, and peanuts and chocolate on top. It's probably good this was discontinued... One less temptation.

All of the talk about mint chocolate chips made me think of one candy I really miss (from a long, long time ago): Choc-O-Mint Life Savers. Also, Milk Shake candy bars.

Had to throw this in...Hey AD?? You have a Haagen Dazs fetish? In last job I worked in the commercial freezer industry. One of my biggest accounts was Haagen Dazs, down in Tulare, California, where I'm originally from. I used to talk to to Maintenance Manager three or four times a week, and we became buddies, probably 'cause I'm a 'home girl'. He said the next time I was home visiting my parents I should come by and see him, introduce myself...and he'd take me on what he called a 'SPOON TOUR' of the ice cream plant.

You want to talk about the female equivalent to seeing a Playboy Centerfold? You should have seen me with my own spoon walking up and down the aisles in the Test Kitchen area sampling new ice creams!! He seriously offered me a job while I was there, and I had to turn him down! Told him ice cream was my downfall, and I'd weigh 400 lbs in a year if I worked for him!

And my local grocery has HC Mint Choc Chip ice cream on sale 2 gallons for $5, so I'm having it for dessert tonight! (Hee!)

My mom has been looking for mint choc chips for that same merangue cookie recipe. We did not find them in the grocery store. I have to say though, that after her visit I found some mint chips at Trader Joes. They were not the small chips, more like small H Kisses sizes. But they could be chopped up for the cookies. I don't know if they still have them, the last I checked was over the holiday. I will be sure to check next time I'm in the store and I will let you guys know what I find out.
