    Question Picnic Ideas?

My husband and I are thinking of going on a picnic this weekend. Our menu usually consists of things that can be eaten simply...a loaf of french bread, cheese, meat, carrots, a variety of fruit. We've also varied this with hummus and pita...basically, simple, earthy stuff. Any suggestions for other picnic items that have worked in the past? Thanks!

    Thumbs up

We're going on a picnic tonight and attending a concert! We're taking most of the typical stuff that you mentioned. In addition to that we're taking a small focaccia and a lemon poppy seed pound cake. YUM! I can't wait!!!

At the Hollywood Bowl, there's a tradition. Pack a picnic-- the more elaborate the better. People show up with fine wines, candles, crystal, all kinds of gourmet fare. It's really a kick.

My husband and I (and now our 10-year-old) have a tradition for stress reduction: what we call Wine and Cheese night (usually held on a Friday)-- similar to your "usual" perhaps, but with a wide variety of cheeses and meats, spinach dip, sometimes a paté and some ridiculously decadent dessert. I've taken shrimp or lobster salad sandwiches to our Bowl picnics, even shrimp cocktail. I've picnicked with Shrimp Louies: lamb, tzatziki, lettuce and feta pitas; muffalettas; calamari pesto pasta; antipasto. What about a Chinese chicken salad? If you're lucky enough to have a gourmet market in your vicinity, stroll the aisles. See what they offer. Picnic possibilities can be endless...

    Whatever you choose, have fun!

In 1995 Good Housekeeping had an article on picnic food. They had a crispy chicken with 3 dipping sauces ( a type of "fried" chicken but baked (used dried bread crumbs and walnuts) The 3 sauces were honey mustard, apricot balsamic and blue cheese. They had a firecracker mix (the mix using the different cereal squares) A sweet onion tart (caramelized inion, herbs and Parmessan filling) Although a while back Southerliving had a vidalia tart that @ this time with vidalias in season might be better.A summer corn salad (fresh corn off the cob, green beans, red pepper & sweet onion in an apple cider vinaigrette). For dessert: jumbo pecan date oatmeal cookies. The recipes were for a picnic for 16. If you want any of these recipes let me know. Or this can give you some ideas......
