    Mosquito attack!!! ALREADY!!!!

Every summer, I get tons of mosquite bites. I must have a blood type which they like to munch on. Today, I noticed that I already got 3 bites on me, just this evening! We live in Arizona, but we have grass in the backyard and probably have more mosquito than other area, I suspect. But I'm wondering......what can I do to repell those yucky mosquitos?? My skin tend to react those bites very bad and I end up having urgy spots all over my legs. I should probably use repellent all the time?(but I hate the smell!!) Is there any pest control I can do around the house to keep them away??

    TIA!

I can offer sympathy. I used to have the same problem. There could be 20 of us sitting in the same backyard, and my Dad adn I would be the only ones covered with mosquito bites at the end of the night--and mine would turn into giant welts the size of a dinner plate. I've heard that "bug zappers" don't work, but anecdotally have been aware of some level of success with them. You can wear repellant all the time, which is probably a good idea if you're "bite prone," especially with the West Nile threat. Again, I don't know if it's true, but I've heard that some people are more attractive to mosquitos because of (a) their hormones; or (b) their blood chemistry/blood sugar. Again, probably not true, but the "common" wisdom.

As for eliminating them around your house, be sure you have absolutely NO standing water anywhere--even a few tablespoons is enough for them to breed. You can have enough in the recessed top of a trash can, the bottom of a watering can, etc. to become a mosquito nursery. Of course, your neighbors need to do the same. Are there any green swimming pools in your neighborhood that you know about? I know the state is going to be very aggressive this year in the area of prevention and making people clean up obvious breeding hazards.

    Good luck, and remember...

    No help, just empathizing.

We have already seen and been bitten by quite a few misquitoes here in IN and it's only April! Way earlier than usual. It's been dry for over a week now, so hopefully that will kill off a few of the buggers. If they stay bad now, we won't be able to venture outside come summer.

I'm another one that gets bit....and our state bird should be the mosquito here

There's supposed to be a new soybean oil based product that helps but I haven't been able to locate it.

Aaaahhh, yes, more "sounds of summer" I can do without

Skeeters like me too, and my son. We both get nasty looking bites.

ITA about the standing water. I lived in Charleston, SC this past summer and MAN they were bad down there. We lived down the street from a swampy area (gators and all that) and they were HORRIBLE!

Our mosquitos are so bad right now we cant be outside at dusk. I told DH lasat night its time to spray the back area our garlic juice

here is the link we got it from
    http://www.mosquitobarrier.com/

it works great! it really smells when you first spray for about 15 minutes but the smell dissapates.

I hate using any kind of pesticide, so I thought I would give it a try, and now even even DH swears by it. He is a magnet to mosquitos, so if he can be outside after using the garlic spray, I just love it

Does it smell good or really strong? Just wondering if it makes you hungry after you spray.....

Thanks for mentioning this. I bought pesticides last year to spray the yard but never did. It's good to hear of a non-chemical alternative. We may give that one a try.

We got a Mosquito Magnet a couple of years ago, and it has made a huge difference. We will still have mosquitos around dusk (but bug spray will keep them away) but the rest of the time I really don't notice any. It wasn't cheap to buy, but it is totally worth it to me to be able to use our yard!

    Thank you everyone!

Well this happened when I was IN the house. I didn't even see the mosquito, but DH told me that he swarted one in the evening. It's not that I spent the evening in the backyard......I'd love to do that, if I could keep them away, though!

Laurie, thanks for the link. I might have to ask DH to think about buying that. I bookmarked that page. Sounds wonderful! No mosquito in our backyard, means no mosquito in the house, right?

clairea, what's mosquito magnet? I'm guessing something like bug zapper?

Obviously, I'm the type they like to bite. I've heard before that there's some certain food to make your body (smell?) not so appetizing for them? Anyone heard about such things? If I can change my body-type or something by eating some foods, I'd try!! It's so annoying being the only one complaining about mosquitos, when others say "Where??"

    Thank you!

Nori. Dh has I think Type A blood and it seems everyone I know that has type A mosquitos love them.

A mosquito magnet attracts the mosquitos and then kills them, they run on propane and electricity. it costs $$ there are several brands on the market. I read consumer reports, they had a good write up on them a few years ago and researched a lot. It wasnt right for us because from what I remember reading you have place it in the the direction of the water source. for us we would have needed more than one because we have standing bodies of waters all around us. I was also told that even water sitting in your sprinkler heads can be a breeding ground and to spray your lawn, but again, I dont want to use pesticides When you use the garlic, DH doesnt even had to weat bug spray
