    Have you eaten daylillies?

We have some daylillies and I read that they are an edible flower. Anyone have any experience eating them? A website on edible flowers said that they may act as a laxative . We are going back to the daylily farm tomorrow for more but I thought it might be fun to try them tonight. Anyone?

I've eaten them. My grandmother always grew scads of them, and we'd often put them into salads for color.

Only the petals are edible -- so don't just pop the entire flower in your mouth They taste a bit sweet -- and slightly "watery" (if that makes sense).

They probably DO have a laxative effect -- but I've never experienced it. Probably means you'd need to eat way more than the average person WOULD before you're affected.

I've eaten the whole flower in salads. My favourite eatin' flower is nasturtiums (peppery) but daylilies are really good -- more succulent than the typical flower. Pansies/violets are good, too, as are calendula petals.

    SUCCULENT... that's the word.

Can you really eat the stamen and all??

The stamen was my biggest fear, afraid of inducing allergies. Thanks for all the other flower suggestions. DH says not to put them in his salad .

I've eaten squash blossems at a fancy resturant but never day lillies. Since we just planted a whole bunch of them, maybe next year we'll give it a try. I don't think DH would be too happy with me taking the few blooms we have for eating.

I've eaten squash blossoms, pansies and nasturtiums, but not daylilies. I like the peppery flavor of the nasturtiums in salads best.

They look so pretty in salads but I have never been able to get myself to eat them. I don't know why - I'm pretty adventurous when trying foods.

I haven't had them but a toddler I know had a whole mouthfull the other day. She was watering the flowers with a watering can at school and apparently decided she was hungry.

I love squash blossoms, yum! And nasturiums are very good.

I've never had a full-grown lily, but aren't lily buds routinely part of Moo Shu? It's the same flower, right?
