    Dumb apple cider question

Does apple cider have to be refrigerated? I need to buy 20 gallons of it for an open house at work and don't think I have enough storage room for that much.

I buy apple cider all the time in the unrefrigerated section of the grocery store (just like apple juice). I would think if you are buying REFRIGERATED cider, then it needs to stay cold. Otherwise, if you bought it at room temperature, I would store it at room temperature.

It depends on whether it has been pasteurized.

I used to buy fresh cider at a cider mill -- you could watch them pressing the apples. That cider needed to be refrigerated -- even refrigerated it would start to go a little hard -- not a bad thing back in my college years.

It's like any food, if sold in the refrigerated section, you need to keep it refrigerated. If you buy pasteurized cider from the shelf, no refrigeration -- but it doesn't taste very good either.

Fresh cider from a mill -- definitely yes.

Ice and a washtub/bathtub would keep it cool enough -- how long are you storing it for.

At some point you would need to chill it anyway unless you are mulling it.
