Need advice on stretchy gym shorts and panty lines!

I have finally taken the plunge and got 2 pairs of the Lycra gym shorts that a lot of women wear in the exercise classes I take.

My (naive) question is, do women wear underwear with these shorts, or a thong? I never see any panty lines (except when I was trying them on in the store ).

I thought this would be a good place to ask, as I'm NOT about to walk up to someone at the gym and ask if they're wearing undies!

If they have a cotton crotch, I count that as underwear.

I'm uncomfortable in lycra shorts unless I wear underwear. feel naked without them! I wear thin nylon undies like string bikinis and under black or gray shorts I don't think they're very visible. I doubt anyone else looks or cares.

You're lucky - at my gym that's mostly what i DO see. In a a step class, it's a little hard to miss!

I wish that women would stop wearinig french bikini cuts w/these shorts. it's just gross IMO...

Ditto here. I just wear them 'as is'. Panty lines are a pet peeve of mine but to each his own.

Nothing worse than spandex over tight panties.

My spandex shorts have a cotton crotch, so I wear them commando. If they didn't have the cotton crotch, I would wear thong underwear.

I've never understood why panty lines have become unspeakably horrid, ESPECIALLY when you are talking about a workout environment. There's nothing wrong with doing what you can to look your best, and memartha I am NOT criticizing you for asking the question. But I'm a little surprised by the responses.

If someone wants to treat me as a pariah for having the unmitigated gall to be so gauche as to have PANTY LINES while I work out -- or any time -- well ... they can get over their unreasonable, judgemental selves.

hence the reason i only wear my spandex workout shorts at home with my workout videos look at it this way--if you can SEE pantylines then you know your panties aren't being swallowed up by a big rear end! i wear my undies all the time, but again, i am at home! when i did do aerobics in a class i still wore my undies 'cause it felt right and i still looked good--strong, exercising bodies look great either way--panty lines or not!

I think a lot of women tend to wear panties that are too small or too tight (creating bulges in the backside); hence the riding up the butt and creating <gasp> panty lines!

But I do really truly think that thong underwear was created for the skinny only with no excess baggage!!! I'm a size 10-12 depending on brand and I have trouble finding any that don't bulge on the sides at your waist or whereever they fall. i've tried Gap XL and they still "squeeze." Just what I need, one more bulge!!! I've also tried VS, Wal-Mart, and some other places i cannot remember...

I have one pair that my gf gave me. they're lace on the sides that stay flat against you and don't ride up. Can't find any remotely like it and neither can she...

Just popping in an unsolicited thought...

I don't wear them in real life, just to the gym but just wanted to plug the Champion brand "boy short" underwear (at Target). I had a hard time figuring out what to wear under yoga capris (down dog position does really bad things to other types of underwear) or under workout pants. Very comfortable, no wedgies, etc.

    Just a thought.

    THANK YOU!! THANK YOU!!!

My apple-shaped SIL wears thongs. Thongs and cellulite floppy butts are not pretty. I used to be larger with a flabby butt, so I never went anywhere in a thong. I am now thin, but I am very conscious of what clothing I wear thongs with so there is no chance of jiggle. I have lacy low riding undies that are a cross between a thong and boy shorts. I think I bought them at TJ Maxx. I think I would wear boy shorts with lycra gym shorts.

Wow, I love all the great ideas. I could give a rat's a$$ about how people look at the gym, but I was just bugged that I looked so squeezed/bulgy in the shorts, and I'm reasonably fit/slender. So I was just wondering how people acheived that "smoother" look.

BTW, I was quite busy adjusting my shorts on Thursday! I'm going again today. Hopefully I'll be a little less self-conscious.

Personally I don't worry about the pantyline so much- as long as it isn't Really digging in! I would rather have a little panyline than wear a thong to workout. I have a pair of shorts that are stretchy and snug but not still a little loose around the legs so commando is out of the question for those. Also- isn't wearing a thong to work out (i am a runner) a bad idea? I remember reading something about this in either self or shape. Patagonia and Nike have undies that are suppose to be smooth and not have a line.
