Question Teacher Man by Frank McCourt

A friend told me about this book with rave reviews. (I know there are a lot of avid readers here, so don't kill me....) I haven't read Angela's Ashes or 'Tis; is Teacher Man a continuation of his memoirs or is it o.k. as a stand-alone book?? I wouldn't mind reading all three but due to lack of time during the school year, it's quite difficult to read a lot. I was going to put in an order and figured maybe I could squeeze in a book over our spring break.

    Thanks!

I started Teacher Man at Christmastime and had to put it down at around page 30 (not because of the book). From what I read, I think it stands on its own and would be a fine read without having read his other books.

I'm considering "Teacher Man," but FWIW, I read 'Tis without having read or seen Angela's Ashes and found it just fine on its own. If you do read Teacher Man, please let us know how it is.

I have read all of them, but Tis would be great to read on its own. It is not a continuation of his memoirs but covers a different time of his life. He goes on about his experience teaching in NYC Public schools- from his beginings at a vocational school (I think) on Staten Island all the way to Stuyvesant- the jewel in the NYC public school crown. He made one of the best points when he was talking about the glamorization of teaching in movies he pointed out that teachers have 7 different classes of students a day. The don't show that in movies like Dangerous Minds!
I take it you are a teacher? I think you would love it. If you ever listen to audio, he did a great interview at the 92nd Street Y that you can download at audible.com.

I have not yet read 'Tis or Teacher Man, but I wanted to make a suggestion for Angela's Ashes. See if your library has the audio version read by the author. I listened to it recently, and truly enjoyed his style and that wonderful little Irish lilt in his speech. A couple of times he actually put me to sleep with it.
