    July Over 50/Empty Nesters

    Hi, folks!

Well, the big July 4th weekend is (finally) over! Our little fire department had 7 calls over the weekend, 5 in 24 hours! But, no one was seriously injured, and no structures were damaged too badly. Fireworks in our rain-starved area was the culprit in all the fires! One person got cut by a boat prop, but not in any serious danger.

So, did your nestlings come home to visit? And, are you (secretly) glad that they went home? Ours did not come -- we had guests from Atlanta, instead. I wish they could have stayed longer! I really cooked up a storm, and she asked for all the recipes, so I was happy! We swam, threw tennis balls in the lake for all the dogs, and generally had a wonderful time. Then, they left on Sunday.

One DD has a new job, and hasn't accrued vacation, yet, so will probably not come until Christmas. The other DD is very sensitive to heat/humidity, and doesn't really enjoy it here in the summer, so we probably won't see her until Christmas, either.

Do you enjoy fireworks? I like to see them, sometimes, but won't sit out in a mosquito-infested dark to watch them... I think I may be a party-pooper!

How are you spending your summer? Is everyone enjoying Cookieee's house/pool party this week?

Any new empty nest items we need to vent/discuss? Let's hear it!

    Happy July!
    Kay

One son lives in Gresham Oregon (near Portland) so he didn't come home for the 4th. Other son lives here in San Diego and he went with us to the church bbq. So it was great to see him. He even stopped by last night because one of the tires on his car has a slow leak and he used the compressor to top it off. But then he left. So we are enjoying our empty nest, but are always glad to see the boys.

Wow, thanks LMGal, a thread that I can really relate to. I have only one child, Joy, married, 2 children. They live about 20 minutes from here, but I don't get to see them as often as I would like. I was VERY HAPPY to spend the 4th with them here. When my daughter was younger and decided it was time to "leave the nest", I was very sad and hated to see her go. But it was time for her. I don't know how parents handle not seeing their children for a long period of time. I guess I shouldn't complain when it is only a few weeks or so.

LMGal, I am a party pooper also. My back prevented me from going with everyone next door to FAU for the citys fireworks. I didn't even look out the window. I just listened to the sounds while checking out the bb. How sad am I? I guess when you have been watching them for "over 50 years" it's nothing new.

Thanks for mentioning our party. Wish everyone would join us. Plug coming up, Sunday Game of the Week #9 Please check it out. NO, it doesn't have anything to do with sports

DD left for the holiday weekend, to spend time with her boyfriend. We had friends over on Sunday; we swam in our above-ground pool and had margaritas. My food offerings included Jewel's garlicky green beans and CL July 2006's Summer Berry Medley with Limoncello and Mint. Both were big hits.

I haven't checked in for quite some time....so let me send Happy BD wishes to LakeMartinGal since it is still her birthday in her time zone (well at least as I type this sentence)!

We enjoyed cookieee's party for only a little while---had to get back home because we are having "refrigerator" issues (into our third week of waiting for parts/waiting for another part/waiting for appliance guy to have time to show up with said parts----jeesh! ).

A highlight this week (other than cookieee's virtual party of course) was going down to the beach on the 4th to watch the flaming thrust of the space shuttle as it rose up --seemingly out of the ocean-- & raced miles into the sky, disappearing from our sight after booster separation. I just had goose-bumps as it appeared on the southern horizon & headed up up up into the sky, leaving a thick white trail that was slowly fragmented by winds at different altitudes. I've seen several launches over the years (from a distance, not from the Cape) & it is always such a thrilling experience....not that I would ever like to be on board!

Both children were here, which made it nice. My siblings, their families and my mom were here. On the way back home, my sister made the announcement that she was never coming back to my house again. *SIGH*

At least we won't be walking on eggshells, anymore.

The weather was HOT and himid and the pool party was broken up by thunderstorms that sent everyone home earlier than if it had been a nice day. but the food was good, and aside from the sister thing, it was a great day!

I really miss having both of the kids here at the same time...especially miss seeing my DD. Those boyfriends keep them busy!

Seeing "our" thread again brings a smile to my face!

We had a great 4th of July. DD didn't make it, but DH's middle brother and family did. Great extended family dinner Friday at the cabin. For the 4th, I volunteered to do dinner at my in-laws, then down to the beach to watch south shore fireworks display, which is always spectacular.

The challenge for the next couple of months is to enjoy the activities of the beautiful Tahoe summer (one of the main reasons we live here!) while working hard to complete estate matters related to the sale of my mother's house and disposition of the contents. Busy is the operative word, but as I've noticed many times, being busy is not in the same league as watching someone you care about deteriorate, so no complaints.

    Enjoy July, everybody!
