Need Recs for Running Shorts

Can anyone recommend a good website for buying running shorts and also some brands? I prefer shorts that aren't too short. The weather has gotten really hot here and my running pants have become unbearable. TIA!

Fitting for you:

www.lucy.com

I have their swift knee short, interval running skirt and 5k running skirt. I love them all. I also have a lot of their tops and capris and casual shorts. It all wears really well and is so comfortable. I look like a Lucy advertisement when I workout.

I like a lot of Title9's clothes, but have never purchased their running shorts.

In fact, I haven't bought any running shorts online. For me, I really have to try them on first. My favorite are Brooks, since they don't ride up on me, but I also wear compression shorts from DeSoto quite often. I find the compression style really comfortable. Zoot makes good ones w/side pockets. They're actually tri shorts.

If you go to runnersworld.com, they have a lot of articles reviewing different running clothes. For their clothing reviews, I'm honestly not certain how much of it is ad driven. But it will at least give you a lot of brands in one website.

Susan, I thought of you this morning when I saw on Lucy's website they have a new style of running skirt. It's flouncy! I agree on the compression style short, that's why I like their swift knee short.

A lot of my shorts are Moving Comfort that I have gotten from Sierra Trading Post on-line. It's hit or miss what's there, but the prices are right.

I like the Moving Comfort shorts and I also like the one pair of Brooks shorts that I have. I have an old pair of Nike shorts that I don't like as much. They are okay, but not my favorites.

I don't know what flouncy means :-)....but I'll go check it out. You've raved about their clothes many times, but I still haven't tried them yet. Keep forgetting.

I know you asked for web sites, but wanted to chime in that my fav running "bottoms" now are Champion running skirts I got at Target. I think they are $20 regular, but if you wait for a sale, you can get them for $17 or so. I like the built in shorts under the skirt... not too tight, not too loose.

I'll check out Lucy, too!

I like my Nike Tempo running shorts. My target ones are ok but they don't fit as well. Under Armour ones are pretty good too.

Those Champion skirts at Target don't fit me. Grrr. How I'd love a running skirt that isn't $70+ (which is what most of them cost)!! Apparently, the entire clothing industry feels that my thighs are too large for my waistline (or the other way around!) - it's my mother's fault.

Moving Comfort is also my favorite. I really pay attention to the length of the inseam and whether it is traditional rise or low rise (I'm way too old for low rise shorts). I prefer to try them on because so many styles just aren't very comfortable and this is one item where comfort is especially important.

Sierra Trading and Campmor are 2 websites I use for casual/athletic clothing but I have quite a few running bras and shorts so I haven't bought any online lately. If the catalog description doesn't provide the length of the inseam I would call their customer service and inquire since that's so important to me.

Hi nylucy!

I don't buy them online but some of my favourite running shorts are Sugoi and New Balance. However, I do like them on the short side.

I think if you check it out you'll see what I mean. It's the only word I could come up with to describe it.

Wow! I must be a major tightwad. Do you guys really spend $40-$50 on a pair of shorts!?!??? I just usually find my workout clothes on the sales racks at Target, Marshall's, TJ Maxx, etc.

I'm not sure I've ever paid $40 or $50 for shorts... I've found good sales. In fact, I just bought a cute pair of tri shorts the other day - $51 marked down to $35 and then 20% off that. I was a happy girl!

I have paid $$ for some other gear but fortunately not for shorts.

Good luck with the hunt and happy trails

Question...is the liner in the running shorts really that important? I know cotton underwears get all sweaty, but what if you wear appropriate underwears?

And do you have enough shorts to last you for a few runs? I can not do laundry every day as I don't have a washer/dryer, so it would be every two weeks or so.

Without underwears, I could only wear the shorts once!

I keep an eye out for sales but yes I do spend that kind of money on athletic wear that fits well and functions how I want it too. I have 2 pairs of shorts and 2 skirts so I can not wash as frequently but none of those 4 look anything but brand new after many washings and one has a white background and has gone through a downpour.

I just save my money elsewhere. I buy a lot of my everyday clothes on massive sale and/or at Target.

I don't wear undies while running so my bottoms get washed after every run (another reason I pay for well made stuff). Undies just add more things to ride up, chafe, irritate etc. Same goes for cycling and tri shorts.

The lined shorts are so much more comfortable! We have enough heat and humidity that I wear the coolest possible outfits for running in the summer. Another good shopping place is the expo held before a large running event (usually a marathon). The vendors have a wide variety of clothes at a good price. I've never paid $40-50 for shorts but when I found a pair I really liked on Sierra Trading I ordered one pair, wore them for a week and then order more before they ran out of my size. The good news is that they last forever!

I wear undies with loose running shorts and will wear them a handful of times before washing (unless it's super humid/sweaty). For compression shorts, I don't wear undies & just hand wash them in the shower after each workout. For the spandex/compression fabric, I think they last longer if you hand wash them anyway (vs a washing machine).

I'm willing to pay in the $30-range for good quality shorts that fit great & have the features I need. That's partly b/c I only really need 2 pairs shorts. I like to have lots of options for tops, tho

It's interesting you mention cost, though. The current RunnersWorld has an interesting article where they tried to buy a complete running outfit for under $100. Of all the 'discount' running gear, technical shirts were the best. The article said that running shorts were hard to find at discount prices/locations (like Target and Sears)

I wear the shorts with liners and wash them in the shower--I wear them once, wash in shower, wear them again and then throw them in the laundry.

I'll have to check out that Runners World article. I have a bunch of wicking tanks from the Reebok outlet that I love and were $10-$15 each. My shorts are usually <$20 each. I might spend up to $30 for great shorts, but not more than that.
