surfing and what to wear question

i have a chance to try surfing for the first time later in aug. i found a surfing type swim suit in the title nine catalog that i really liked but... the bottoms are not available!!

where else would be a good place to look for something like this that is well-made, will stay put (i don't think my current suit will!), and isn't too too pricey???

thanks!!

this is what i liked

I've had that trouble at T9 too. I love their suits though so I order early now. If I need them or not

Athleta has bottoms something like you're looking for. I've been happy with their suits too.

Good luck.

Don't forget to find a top that will stay in place. The first time I went surfing I wore the same style of shorts you have posted and they worked fine but I wore my regular bikini top and that did not stay on.

You might consider a rash guard for the top to wear over your suit. If you get one with spf protection, you won't have to worry about burning. And you'll be well-covered.

For the bottoms, I would recommend checking out some of your local sports shops (the one I had luck with was Sports Chalet). I found men's board shorts on sale for $20 a pair (normally around $50) and they actually fit me much better than women's. I find women's board shorts a bit short for me. The ones I got are longer and I can wear them anytime. Just a thought.

Have fun!

donleyk- i'll check athleta- thanks

salt- uh-oh i was planning to wear my bikini top!!! since i can't get the bottoms with top to match. it was a bikini top that went with the bottoms that i posted. i know that my bikini bottom will not work! maybe i'll take tkay's advice and get a rash guard top. i'll be surfing near jacksonville fl- depends on the weather i guess on how calm or rough the waves will be.

Call Title 9! I had my eye on a board short (the ones that look blue and change to a design when wet ), so I called because I was mad that none of the board shorts were available! They told me that they might be still around, and only one or two in each size are available...so I ordered mine!

And don't forget that "true surfer chicks" rarely wear matching bikinis - different tops from bottoms are all the rage. Just doing my part to help you "look cool" while you learn to surf. =) Have fun!

Every time I see this thread title my brain answers "wetsuit".
Guess that's a regional thing, eh?

Does your bikini top have string ties?

I've had bikini tops with ties at both the neck (halter style) and at the back.

For me, the trick to keeping either from coming undone when surfing was to double tie each using the same technique you would if you were trying to keep shoe laces from coming loose.

In these parts, you see wet suits (as well as those without) at all times of the year. I think it would take a full wet suit (including booties and gloves) for me to surf. That's not really a testament to the water's temp, but to my wimpiness, mind you.

I hear you! I was in a full wet suit with hood gloves the works for my check out dive (scuba) and still cold! Of course the instructors were in dry suits! -this was in June i think, in a lake in PA.

I'm not sure if you're taking lessons or not, but DH just took a surfing "class" (5 minutes of instruction, plus 4 hours of surfboard rental ) in Destin. They loaned out long-sleeved rash guards to the students, but DH had his own short-sleeved one. He regretted not wearing the long-sleeves since he had rashes on his arms after surfing for half a day. You might see if they provide rash guards, and if not, consider buying one yourself.

I'll be at my family reunion at my cousins house. Another cousins DH is really into surfing and they are going to take a few of us out to see what its like. I'm hoping to do this after breakfast and golf and before dinner- so not for more than an hour or two. Might end up trying once or twice and then just hanging/floating and watching!!

are the rashes from rubbing on the sand??

i'm hoping to not spend too much- like i said i've always wanted to try surfing but its only going to be for a few hours...

everything seems to be on sale so maybe i should pick up a long-sleeved rash guard????
