Goodbye, Sweet Katie

Tonight we are saying goodbye to our precious puppy, Katie. We got her in April, when she was 4 months old. Having her has been an adventure, to say the least, and she has brought a tremendous amount of joy to our family in the last 4 months. I posted some early stories about her hereand here.

Yesterday afternoon Katie bit my next door neighbor when he was coming over to help DS with a stuck lock. She took a pretty good chunk out of his leg, but fortunately he was not seriously hurt and did not require stitches. With kids of my own, and lots more always around, there is no way I can feel safe keeping her now unless I kept her penned up a lot. So, we have made the tough decision to give her up.

She is going to a local no-kill shelter. They have large area of land, and will keep her for as long as necessary (or forever, if she can't be adopted out).

There are so many animal lovers on this board, I just wanted to share with people who might understand how hard this is.

Oh gee, I'm sorry you have to do that but certainly understand why. Although I know you will miss her terribly, knowing she can be adopted or live out her natural days with lots of land to run may help some.

Good thoughts heading your way...

Kate

Claire,

I'm so sorry you have to give up your pup. Hopefully she has a good future ahead of her with no more biting.

I'm sorry - I know this had to be a very difficult situation, and hopefully she will be adopted by a family that can handle her!

Oh, what a difficult thing to do. I'm so sorry you're having to go through this. I hope the pup finds a new family to live with--maybe someone without kids? In any case, hang in there. I feel for you.

Oh, dear! What a brave and difficult thing to deal with! You've done the best you could for your pup, and I'm sure she'll find a forever home with a family (like mine) that has no children! It sure tears a hole in your heart, doesn't it?

I'm so sorry -- I can imagine how hard this has been, but I hope that having the option of a no-kill shelter has made it a bit easier for you.

Hugs to you and your family.

Thank you all for the kind words and sympathy. DH took Katie to the shelter last night. I cried so hard, but I know we are doing the right thing. There is no way we could keep her safely, and if we were to try, she wouldn't have any quality of life as she would have to be crated whenever people were around. She was so much fun, though (even though she was definitely the most expensive "free" dog I have ever had), that we sure will miss her!
