VRBs week of September 18th
Guess I'll get us started this week as well.
The movie last night was fantastic! So good I bought the DVD on the spot and think I'll probably enjoy an encore showing at home tonight. I got to meet the guy who made it and chat with him quite a bit. Everyone cross your fingers because after the tour they're doing a drawing from everyone who attends for a trip to Chamonix France to ski!!!
Great run to report this morning. I entered this little race for a whopping $13 entry fee so didn't expect much. I didn't even bother bringing my race belt because I doubted we'd have numbers but I was so wrong. Not only did we have numbers but also got a nice little stuff bag that's sturdier than most I've seen. Oh, and a toothbrush! I have no idea who came up with that swag. But, on to the race. I went out too fast so mile 2 hurt but I settled in and finished under my goal and have officially shaved 2 minutes per mile off my pace from early August when I really started back running. Guess the old adage of run more to run faster really is true. That's 4 runs this week (I track my weeks Sunday - Saturday) which is more runs in a week than I've done since I was a kid. It feels fantastic though!

Robyn - Thanks for starting again this week. What movie did you see last night? (I probably missed your comment on last week's thread.) Good job on your race this morning even if you went out fast. I love small races because you get such interesting swag - but a toothbrush is something I wouldn't have thought of, must have had a dentist sponsoring the race. Good luck getting the trip to Chamonix! Need a bag boy? Good job getting 4 runs in this past week too.
I had a good day, slept in because I needed to. Then got rambunctuous and took a long ride. wended my way over to the W&OD trail and headed west. It felt so good and conditions were grand ~70 so I was "flying" (if you can do that on a mountain bike). I ended up doing my longest ride ever - 29+ miles. Maybe I'll be ready to make the one-way ride to Purcellville before the end of the season (~40 miles). The hardest part of the ride was the hills at the end, at 25 miles I ended up going up a 12% grade - tough on the legs. Still felt pretty good.
Now to get ready for the rest of the evening and prep for early church in the morning (service starts at 7:45 and I have to drive 35 minutes to get there).
Happy trails,
Les

Les I saw the movie The Edge of Never which is a ski film with a storyline. They take Trevor Peterson's son Kye to Chamonix to ski the Glacier Rond where Trevor died in a solo skiing accident. It's really more a story of the heart of the tribe of big mountain skiers. Star studded and incredible. Great job on your ride and I only wish I'd been able to sleep in this weekend.
I got in a 30 mile ride with a friend today however it felt like about 60 with the winds. Steady over 20mph and gusting above 30mph. Most of the time as a cross/head wind. Cross was so bad I had to really lean into it to not get blown over. Other problem with that is that I couldn't be in my aero bars much which messes with my fit and makes the ride tougher as well. Honestly, I'm kinda over riding this summer. Don't tell my dad!

Robyn - thx for kicking off the new week! Congrats on a super fun race and new running pace. You've been working hard and earned it. I'm off to go find that movie on Netflix. And you've reminded me to lookup the annual Warren Miller schedule. It typically come to Madison too early...b4 the snow hits.
Les - you ride so often that I can't believe 29 is your longest! Just one more mile and you're at a great milestone. In fact, I probably would have just rounded up :-)
DH & I got in a good, steady, low key run with Bode last Friday. I feel really good, even though my schedule has been off lately. Must be all of the walking we've been doing on vaca. We were out of town over the weekend, going to the Iowa football game w/a bunch of DH's friends from college who all came in town. Very fun. Extremely bad typical tailgating food. It's good to be back home & in control of what I cook for meals! Last night was spinach salad with sauteed shrimp & veggies.
I've just signed up for 2 upcoming trail races, both 10K, and really looking forward to them. I am on track to have done a race every month this year starting in March! That's kind of fun.

Susan you won't find it on Netflix as it's just touring the country now and the only place to buy the DVD is at the showings. But I think they're headed to Wisconsin so check out www.edgeofneverfilm.com. Well worth it!

Thx for the film info, Robyn. It looks interesting. If you had to pick Warren vs Edge to see this year, which would you pick?
(Warren's movies haven't been as powerful in recent years, i've noticed. Plus, they are way overpriced IMO. I do have a bit of a crush on Johnny Moseley who narrates this year, but it's just not the same)

Haven't made it to the CC in a while due to life in general, but the TM at home has been working just fine. Some days I just walk while I watch TV, but some days I run. I have been wearing my beloved pedometer faithfully , and it is quite a motivator. If I had a low day the day before, I will do all I can to make it up on other days so that I keep my average above 10,000 steps per day each week. I must confess that I pace while I brush my teeth! I am not alone as some of my coworkers also are participating, and they are as obsessive about taking the stairs as I am. It's good to have company!
I know I should get back to the weights, and be a little more consistent with my running, but frankly I have been a little less motivated lately, and I am sure it has to do with things being a bit hectic. Hopefully I will be back to my usual stuff in another week or so.
Robyn, 4 runs per week is fantastic! Congrats on your race time, too. 2 minutes is quite an improvement. Nice to see your workouts paying off in such a concrete manner, I am sure.
Glad to hear you had such a good ride, Les. If you do the one-way to Purceville, does someone meet you and bring you back, or are you talking about an 80 mile round trip ride?
Susan, sounds like a fun weekend! We were at a football game, too, as it was Family Day at DS's school. They lost the game, but the band (which is what we were there to see anyway) was great! A race every month sounds like a fun goal to be working on. So are these in October and November? Sounds like things will be getting chilly....
Another meeting tomorrow, and it is an early one, so I am off to bed. Good runs/rides to all!

Susan that's a tough choice! Thank goodness that I don't have to make it. I'll put it this way, if you want to see lots and lots of incredible turns that you can only dream about see Warren. If you want to see some great turns with an endearing storyline see Edge of Never.
Rest day for me so nothing here for a workout. A bit of a sad story today. I friend of a couple of my co-workers was killed on his bike yesterday after having survived 3 heart attacks and pancreatic cancer. So very sad. The scary part was that it was on the route I took (although going the opposite direction) yesterday and I think happened about 5 minutes after I passed the intersection. That means I probably saw him on the road just before he was hit. Be careful out there folks. And hug your loved ones.

I'd find someone to pick me up because I'm not sure I'm up to 80 miles on the bike. That would be more than double my previous best and I think that would be "fatal" - if only for my tush.
See you on the 'morrow,
Les

I have been such a slacker! I haven't worked out since Fri. Not sure why, but just not feeling like it. I don't want it to feel like a chore, ya know? I typically love it and don't think twice. So, I've been telling myself to go with the mood and enjoy the break. But, I'm hoping to get out today for a run. It will probably energize me.

Susan Sometimes we just need a break. Glad you allowed yourself to take one.
I had an unplanned rest day yesterday as I got all the way to the gym for a pilates class and realized I'd grabbed a running skirt. Uh, yeah, can't do pilates in a skirt. I ended up calling an extra rest day. So, tonight I got out for a rain in glorious drizzly 48 degree temps with sun peaking through at times, a rainbow and the smell of winter approaching in the air. Yep, loved it. About the same pace as Saturday's race for a bit longer distance at 3.3 miles. Also, I found a running group that will take slowpokes like me so I'm going to go with them on Saturday to see how it feels.

Robyn - you tease me. I wish it was 48 degrees right now (it was 86 today). I hope you like your running group - it sounds like you've found a good one.
Susan - I'm with Robyn, every once in a while you need to take it easy. Live in the moment and enjoy the off time. you'll bounce back quickly.
I finally got out today for an hour's ride (14+ miles). It was pretty nice but it was pretty warm. I'm going to have to start riding earlier soon - by the time I rolled home at 6:50 it was getting dimmer than I had hoped for. I guess fall is truly upon us.
Happy trails all, maybe a new thread tomorrow with a run by me.
Les

Les nice job on the ride.
I hear ya on the cool temps. It was in the upper 50s when I headed out today and I was sad that I couldn't wear my new hoodie with fold over sleeves that make mittens. There goes my gear habit again! I got out for a slow 2.5 miler today. Wanted to take it somewhat easy as I'm having a bit of groin/hip pain. Not quite sure what is causing it but I might have to try some ice baths which doesn't thrill me.
