Can I bake with Gala apples or use them for anything other than raw?

I was given a 6 Gala apples. I can eat them as is, toss in a salad etc, but wondering if I can do anything else with them?

I've never seen that apple listed as a "baking" type apple.

Can I bake with them? Applesauce? Or ...... Or, is it best suited, as I think it might, to eat raw.

Thanks,

I've used them shredded in quick breads and they seemed to work fine - but with not quite the 'appley' flavor that granny smiths would have. How about a compromise - carmel apples - still raw but more of a desert raw than a salad raw.

I would use them for just about anything - they would make fine applesauce. You probably wouldn't need to add much, if any, additional sugar either.

You can absolutely bake w/them (pies, crisps, sauce, etc). I'd mix them with a few more strongly flavored ones, tho. Not a requirement, but might give you nicer results.

Hey....given your name.....I figured you'd already have experience with this ;-)

They're really great raw. They're just about my favorite eating out of hand apple. They also make a great applesauce (with no sugar). I've even made cranberry applesauce with them and used no sugar.

They bake fine too but I've found that I really prefer a tart apple like Granny Smith for pies and stuff like that.

Thanks everyone. I've never baked with Gala's before so I wasn't sure. I too prefer a tarter apple.

Hmm..... apple muffins sounds good.

I've never made applesauce before, so I might give that a try. If anyone has any suggestions on how to make applesauce, I'm all ears. Off to look for a recipe.

Thanks again.

I bake with them all the time, but I've finally found that Granny Smith are too tart for me unless mixed with something else.

Use them in muffins!
This past weekend I roasted an acorn squash, cubed, with a large gala apple, also cubed, seasoned with salt, olive oil, pepper and curry powder, it was sooo delicious that I made it again today to bring to work. Next time I will add some raisins or currants as I think that would complement the sweet flavors of the apples and the spiciness of the curry.

Thanks Canice and Ana for the info. Good to know that I can cook with them. The acorn squash sounds great.

I am going to see what ingredients I have on hand ---- baking will be a bit tough if I don't have enough flour.

Thanks again everyone for the help!

This Cinnamon-Apple Cake is a big hit every time I make it, and also very popular on the BB. I've definitely made it with Galas but again, if you prefer tarter apples for baking Galas won't be a good choice for you.

Making apple sauce is super easy & yummy. Once you do it, it will be hard to go back to the jarred/grocery store kind. CL has a few great recipes. I'll try to dig them up
