Oops? Question about cooking with old wine

I am making a crockpot beef recipe that calls for a lot of red wine. I usually have an opened bottle around that I keep just for this purpose. I didn't have enough in my open bottle and had to use about half a cup from another already open bottle that I must have forgotten about.

When I looked again, I remembered that this second open bottle had been open a really, really long time. Like many months! It smelled okay to me.

Is there any safety risk in using really old wine, or I am mainly risking that the wine may have tasted a bit vinegar-y?

Thanks from a CLBBer who should really dust that liquor cabinet more often.

Bumping up again . . . just can't decide whether this crock-pot dish will be okay . . .

I wouldn't be concerned about it from a safety standpoint.

Me neither. I am embarrassed to admit how old some of the wine was that I've used for cooking.

I think it would be okay. You probably would have been able to tell by smell if it had turned bad due.

Thank you all for your replies. I was a little paranoid, I guess, when I realized how old the bottle was! (Note to self - EMPTY the bottle if you are going to save it to remember which friend likes what wine!)

Well, we had the crock pot dish, but it was underwhelming for me. It was from the Year in Crockpotting blog, her adaptation of Julia Child's Beef Bourgenoin (why can't I spell that correctly?). Anyway, I didn't think it tasted all that different from a regular chuck roast in the crock pot. (But it wasn't cause the wine was bad!)

I was going to say to drink some first to see if tasted vinegary. But I see now that it was already in the crockpot. Sorry it didn't turn out as well as you'd hoped.
