Talking Are you a smoker?!

Would love your recommendations/reviews on smokers for meats/fish, thinking this would be a great gift for DH for Christmas! Which brand do you own, and what should I be looking for for options, quality, etc? Thanks for your recs!

DH has a Big Green Egg and LOVES it. It's nice that it can also be used for grilling and you can even do bread in it.

I know he has friends with the Weber smoker too and they make great food on them.

BF LOVES his Weber Smokey Mountain. He used to own a BBQ restaurant and is a pretty proficient smoker.

You can grill on it. I googled and you can bake bread in it. We've never tried it though.

Big Green Egs are great too. But they're expen$ive.

I'd like a big green egg myself. I know there are other ones that are similar to the big green egg and I think they are a little cheaper but not by much. As far as a smoker, I don't own one of those either but if I ever do get one I will probably get an electric one because I was told you could regulate it better than a charcoal one.

We always use the Weber smoker. The food always turns out great and the price is very reasonable.

Can I ask a stupid question? What kinds of things do you do with a smoker? I am always stumped with present ideas for DH. He likes to grill, would he like to smoke??

Barbecue (as in real barbecue like we have here in Texas and they have in Memphis, North Carolina, etc. - low and slow where you get the tasty bark and pink smoke ring). Things like pork butt (for pulled pork), ribs, chicken, beef brisket, sausage.

I also use our Egg to cold smoke cheese. I grill things indirect and have wood chunks in the charcoal to impart a little smoke flavor to the meat.

Some of the folks I know who have a smoker also make their own hot smoked salmon and beef jerky.

Funny you asked, as this was my next question for all of ya! I know he'll want to do beef and salmon, but thought I'd also inquire for those who have good experience, what else can you smoke? (was thinking I could stock the freezer with some things for him to try.....)

Thanks so much for all the recs so far... that BGE looks fantastic, but a little (ok, ALOT) out of my budget... sounds like the Weber will fit the bill as a great gift for him. And so now, what are your fav "smoked" recipes?
