What are small white boiling onions?

I'm making a recipe that calls for "small white boiling onions"- what exactly are these?

Thanks!!!

the recipe

I found this on cooks thersaus but don't think I've ever noticed them before. I have seen the cippolinis but not recently.

boiling onion = boiler = boiler onion Notes: These are small versions of yellow, white, or red onions. They're up to two inches in diameter, and usually cooked whole. Substitutes: pearl onions (smaller) OR cippolini onion

Hi Cheryl,

I see them in my supermarket. They are about 1-1/2 to 2" in diameter, mild in flavor.
Wondering if minced shallot would work for your recipe, that's what I would do if I didn't have them.

Or red onion.

Dolores

ETA: just read the entire recipe...red onion would be my first choice.

I love your idea of shallots- I haven't seen boiling onions in either of the two grocery stores- but then I wasn't looking either. I have some leftover red onion but think I'll use the shallot- DH likes those better. Thanks!!

Cheryl, I clicked on the link for your recipes, and only looked at the first one. And in my mind I screamed, "Oh, Cheryl--no!!!!!" Then I realized the onions weren't meant for the pudding.
