Who gets bronchitis during a flu pandemic?
Why I do, of course!
I spent last night in the ER bc my chest was so tight and full of pressure I had trouble taking deep breaths (had no idea that was such a big deal but when I called the doctor on call she did not even hesitate, said go). I have felt like I was fighting something off (weirdly tired, under the weather, uninspired) all week so it is not shocking. Lungs were mostly clear and heart was fine so I was sent home w/ antibiotics and cough medicine.
None of which would be much cause for upset except for my poor little Sammy who has been waiting for her 3rd birthday for FOREVER and whose party is tomorrow. I told my family I would hide in my room and they could order pizza if they would please still come (ILs are already here). So far they are. So here's to wonderful family and everyone cross your fingers that I do feel better (i.e., it is bacterial, responds to the antibiotics and is therefore not catching) and not worse....

I am so sorry to hear you aren't feeling well, especially over your daughter's birthday. I hope she still has a wonderful celebration and that you feel better very soon.
What kind of wonderful cake did you make for this?

I never made it. We are getting Cold Stone Creamery cupcakes instead, which she will probably love. I was planning on dark chocolate cupcakes w/ peppermint white chocolate frosting. Sigh. But I did get to make her mousse cake on her actual birthday, last Tuesday. And if I feel better I host a playgroup this Wednesday--it will be a joint bday playgroup and Halloween celebration so I can do cupcakes then. So like I said hopefully it is bacterial.
But it is tomorrow that Sammy was really looking forward to. She has been asking who is coming and will they sing to her all week.

Oh, Laura, that sucks. I hope you feel better soon.
And I also hope you will post the recipe for those cupcakes after you make them!

I hope you get to feeling better soon. Bronchitis is awful. I had it two years ago and my cough lasted for months.
I hope your daughter has a delightful birthday party and hopefully you'll be well enough to enjoy it!

I just got over this same thing. I started out with something that felt like the flu and felt lousy all week. I finally ended up at the doctor's office with a horrible hacky cough the next Monday and it was bronchitis. She gave me antibiotics and it responded really quickly. I'm fine now but it took a couple of weeks to get there.

Laura, there is lots of bronchitis going through my school right now. Everyone is positive they are getting the flu, and then they end up with the bronchitis diagnosis. I hope you are feeling better soon.

I hope you feel better soon and can enjoy the party.
Just an fyi, bacterial IS CONTAGIOUS as well...but once you are on antibiotics for a good 2 days, you should be ok (I think).

Oh no! I hope you are feeling better soon. And I hope your DD can still enjoy her party!
I had bronchitis a few years ago-hideous! I actually tore a muscle in my chest from coughing so much that took about 2 months to totally heal.

Sorry you are so sick. I've had bronchitis once and was so miserable -- and mine wasn't bad enough to warrant the ER or anything. Hope you are feeling better.
I've got a tickle in my airways, but I'm hoping it is just allergies.
I just heard last night that one of our band kids who has been out sick had flu. She was under doctor's orders not to do any extra-curricular stuff when she came back. Her parents kept her out of band, but she played basketball and wound up with pneumonia. Please follow your doctors' orders.

Wallycat: in my experience 36 hours is long enough on antibiotics. But it is irrelevant bc I am certain this is viral. I woke up with a fever (for me--I NEVER get fevers, 99 means I am sick and it was 100). I feel terrible, am tired of tea, cold liquids are giving me chills, am drinking room temp carbonated water (UGH), and my head hurts.
But on the plus side my entire family (that could come to start with) showed up and the birthday girl--by all accounts since I missed it --had a grand time.
Am trying not to be overly sad--I cry easily when sick and have already cried a few times over missing it. Blech. I hate being sick.
On an amusing note DD#1 had hysterics last night at bedtime over not being able to hug me so I finally put a king sized pillow case on her and hugged her that way-- breathing away from her with washed hands of course.
ETA interesting that bronchitis is going around. IME experience (this is my 5th time with it) it was always just me, an infection that came out of a cold, I've never experienced a bronchitis that was going around.

I'm so sorry you are sick but glad your little one enjoyed herself.
Bronchitis can be a secondary infection but not always.
At least at age 3 (if I recall your post) she won't remember much one way or the other. Nice to have family near by to support you!
Get better soon.

I'm not worried about her memories--I'm worried about mine!!! But yes it was wonderful they all came. And my MIL did a ton of work getting the house ready.

The party was nice, but Laura's dessert would have been much better than the ice cream ones we had from the store (and really not the same with Laura sealed up in her bedroom)
I am sure you could ask Sammy to reenact the entire party for you, and she would do so happily

I watched the videos--which made me cry all over again I am clearly the waterworks when sick--and she looked like she had a marvelous time. And yes my dessert would have been far better; I've made those cupcakes before ( here, Erin) and they are fabulous!

Hope you feel better soon..I know it was hard missing your little one's b/d party.
OT, but someone commented:

This is what I am hearing both from my Doctor's office and some nurse friends that I have. Bronchitis and strept throat are emptying our schools.
Anyway, hope you recuperate, real soon!

It would seem I also have a sinus infection. But still not testing positive for the swine flu.

Yuk. (My work for the day apparently -- trying hard to avoid moron, idiot and immature, impatient, short-sighted and back-stabbing-power-hungry-low-lifes -- I'm not frustrated with them or anything ).
Seems curious that you are getting the things they say to watch for as secondary but not testing positive for flu. I guess than can happen, but haven't we read about people who didn't test positive for flu having flu? Is the instant test not very accurate for this strain? Guess it doesn't really matter as long as you are getting the rest, medication and care you need and get better soon.

I have heard that there is a very high false negative rate for the flu test. Did any doctors/nurses mention that the test is not always accurate?
