Can I freeze preshredded parm?

When I buy parmesan cheese, I usally buy a real small chunk (I typically get the cheese dept at WF to cut a small piece even smaller -- love that they will do that). But last time, I just bought it preshredded at WF. Can I freeze some of the leftovers? And, how long do you think the shredded parm will last in the frig?

Thanks,

Yes. But I think don't put it ina a freezer just put it in your refrigerator just to chill it not freeze. I usually buy preshredded Parmesan cheese but I really don't know how long it will last. Because I use mine for only a week.

Is Margalicous post spam? I reported it. The link in the signature line leads to a discount pot and pan site. Also AC - I've frozen shredded or grated parm before - it should be fine if you don't leave it in there too long. The hunks of parm don't freeze so well. It makes them very dry and crumbly so I've been told.

Excuse me, Trish, but have you been deputized by Marshall Mike and Deputy Gumbeaux? And how many pots and pans did you buy?

When I buy the preshredded parm from the grocery store, there is usually a date on it, often a couple of months in the future. I use it up by then, and I think parm is something that keeps longer than other cheeses.

I've been buying preshredded parm from Costco in two big bags for some time now. As soon as I get it home I throw the bags into the freezer. Once I open one, I use out of it right from the freezer because the shredded cheese stays loose and easy to measure. And even though the bags are resealable, I double-bag the opened one in a sealable freezer bag.

I have had no problem with any of it going bad and I really don't even look at the expiration date.

I'm not a fan of frozen cheese at all. It really tastes funky to me. Then there's the fact that I eat it so quickly I rarely have a need to freeze it :-)

Cheese lasts a really, really, really long time in the fridge. It is absolutely fine to eat unless it gets green & moldy. And then, only the moldy pieces are bad. Throw them out & the rest of the bag is still fine.

Unless you think it will be 6 months before you can eat it (or if you don't have the fridge space), I would vote for wrapping it well & keeping it in the fridge.
