A different kind of gooey butter cake

I know many here -- including me -- are fans of the Paula Deen Gooey Butter Cake, made with cake mix and cream cheese, among other things. Here's a recipe for something similar but all from scratch, from the NYTimes:

http://www.nytimes.com/2009/11/04/dining/04appe.html (link to the recipe in the side bar).

I actually saw this on the NYT website on Sunday as well. I had never heard of it but it looked so wonderful I copied and pasted it to a folder to try later. If this week-end doesn't get too crazy I may make it on Sunday and take most of it to work on Monday to share. That's how I "get rid of" stuff I don't want hanging around the house.

OMG...Drool! I'm definitely making that soon! I grew up w/my mom and aunt making the cake mix version quite often (minus the stick of butter that Paula Deen adds to the filling!). I've always wanted to try a "from scratch" version. Thanks for posting the recipe, funniegrrl.

I'm curious how your mom and aunt made the crust base with out butter then? I am forever trying to find a way how to lighten this sin for a dessert and I'm stumped! I stopped adding the whole box of confection sugar and just have done 1 1/2 cups instead, which is much better and less tooth achingly sweet.

They used the butter in the crust but not in the cream cheese layer...I think Paula Deen also adds a stick of butter to the filling part. I believe this is the recipe my mom and aunt always used. This recipe is also in one of my Jr. League cookbooks but it's called "Chess Cake".

I think I've been forgetting to add the second stick of butter to the filling! I do recall there being two sticks in the recipe, I make PD's Pumpkin one every year, and for the past two years I only remember making it with one stick just for the crust, HA! No wonder I was like, wow how do you lighten yours up?

Okay now I will go and look at the recipe to see if I've been off for the past couple of years...who knows maybe its a good thing
