Virtual Running Buddies 11/6

Happy happy Friday runners!

I'll kick off the week with a few good reports....
1) I did run w/my running group last night. People & a new route was just the ticket I needed. I hate running in the dark, but having the social group aspect makes up for it. An old friend I haven't seen in over a year was there. He's one of the top 10 amateur triathletes in the country & super fast. He actually hung back a while & ran w/me for the first 5 minutes to chat. Very nice!

2) I went to a yoga class today! woo hoo! Finally biting the bullet & finding a regular class to attend. DH has sticker shock, but he'll have to get over it. It's really not expensive, & is worth it for my core health. And I've learned that the home DVDs just don't work for me

3) I looked up my results from last weekend's race & learned that I came in 4th in my age group, out of 22. Very surprised & pleased. The 3rd place woman was 2 min ahead of me, which is good. If she were only 15 seconds I would have kicked myself!

Any fun plans for the weekend around here? Les - how is the tooth healing?

Thanks for getting the new thread started Susan. Glad you had a good run with your group and found a yoga class you like. I did some yoga myself this AM, and I really want to get more regular again. I swear it made all the difference that I was doing it regularly when I went skiing last year.

Got out for another run today, about 3 miles, and talk about slogging through. It was not very enjoyable, but hey, it's done! Not sure what was up, but I guess they can't all be great.

Supposed to be a beautiful weekend, so hopefully I will be able to try it again.

Thanks for starting this week Susan. Great job on your race last week. I know how it feels to miss placing by less than 20 seconds - 2 minutes wouldn't bug me either. That was nice of the triathlete running with you like that. Sometimes you just have to do things - I hope you enjoy the yoga workouts; but I know you will. My tooth is doing well, I got a clean bill of health last week and now it's just wai until I get the actual tooth fitted on New Year's even (happy day).
Kathy - Good for you getting your run in even if it felt like you were slogging through. I hope you had a good weekend like we did here.

Speaking of which, LW and I joined my intern parish for a retreat this weekend. Did a lot of fun things and spent time with bunches of people - lovely thing for me, LW got a little overwhelmed (Myers-Briggs Introvert... need I say anything more?) During a break I went for a run for about an hour - the hills were killer, and I didn't even do the hard ones. Felt good but I can't believe that I was running in mid-November in shorts and a tank and actually sweating a lot. It wasn't the greatest run on one account though - yesterday was the first time in all my runs (ever) that I've had a driver swerve into me. I was running on a two lane road and right on the line at the edge of the road. This yutz rounded a corner (probably 1/4 or more away) and aimed right for me. I stopped and moved off the side of the road (into the tall-ish grass) and he actually did not veer away until well after he passed me. When I stepped back onto the pavement he actually honked at me and flipped me off. I had hoped that I would see him (and his dog) again on the out and back but didn't. Scared me quite a bit and made me terribly MAD!

Safe but my heart was working overtime.

Fun week ahead - runs and rides I hope.

Happy trails,
Les

Les - Wow, what a scare! That would irk me too. I can at least see why people don't like bikes on the road. But runners? Glad that LW got to spend the weekend w/you at the retreat. That sounds cool.

I had a great weekend. Sat run with DH & Bode. Sun DH & I went on a bike ride. 30 miles w/some old favorite hills. I hadn't been in almost 2 months, and could feel it. I really ran out of juice on the 2nd half. But it was really nice to be out on the roads again.

Today is another yoga day. I have a one-week pass w/the new yoga studio, so I hope to check out as many different instructors & classes as possible.

Fri night was also awesome, although I didn't run nearly enough to make up for it! We had a local Wisconsin cheesemakers event, with more than 30 artisanal cheese makers from around the state. Each one had 3-4 cheeses to try. We had thought we'd just have a bit of cheese, then go out to dinner. No way. We were so full! I can't believe I ate only cheese for dinner! It was really awesome. I think I have met my calcium quota for the entire month!

Glad you didn't get hurt, Les, and I hope your heartrate has calmed. I would be mad, too. What is wrong with people??? DD was driving on the highway yesterday, and 4 motorcyclists sped past us swerving in and out of traffic and cutting people off intentionally. One was even doing "wheelies"! I just don't understand why some people think everything is all about them..... But anyway...a weekend retreat sounds great, and if your weather was like our weather, you picked a beautiful weekend to have it!

The cheese fest sounds fun, Susan. My relatives always bring us a block of Brick and a block of Colby when they visit, and we go through it in record time. How did you like your first yoga class?

Cool and overcast here today, with a threat of rain, so I was just going to run to mail a letter and back (a little over 2 miles), but then the sun came out while I was running, and I stretched it out to a 4 miler! Haven't done that for a while! Took the dogs for a walk when I got home, so now it can rain and I'll be fine with it.

Hi to Vicci, Tkay, Carrie, Elizabeth, Robyn and anyone else that will be checking in! Hope your weeks are starting out well!

Weights at the CC this AM, then I got in a 3 miler outside. It was a little chilly, so I wore my hoodie. Before it was over, the sun came out and I was actually a bit warm. Nice to be able to be outside in NOVEMBER! I am making a real effort to stay outside a little longer this year and not be a wimp! We'll see how it goes...

Ack! Typed in individual replies and failed to hit the submit button. Got signed off while I was away and lost my witty and insightful commentary. Drats. Here's the gist.

Les - Scary! And maddening. Glad you're okay.

Susan - Cheese good. Yoga good. Race good.

KathyB - Good going on extending your run the other day. Nice on getting outside too.

Did a 45 minute TM workout including breaks for lunges and some weight work. Trying to strengthen my lower body again. It's been neglected. Susan's reminding me I miss yoga.

Happy Tuesday, runnahs. Hope you're having a great one.

TKay, similar situation here-- typed a lengthy reply last evening and *poof*! It disappeared! Very frustrating, and I cannot remember just what I said!

Les, I cannot believe that person! I would have been screaming and flipping him off, but I have a feeling that you were a lot... calmer... I'm glad that, overall, the retreat (with LW) was a positive experience.

Susan, a weekend of running after the cheese-fest sounds like a good idea.

KathyB, I'm with you about getting outside for as long as I can this winter. The trails can be slippery when it snows, but DH ran the riding mower out over them over this past weekend and blew off the leaves, so it won't be too bad.

I've had a lot of "almost" 4 mile runs lately. But we are selling the train station and cleaning it out of 15 years' worth of stuff is proving to be a bigger challenge than we had originally anticipated. I spent 2 days tearing apart almost 200 manufacturers' product binders, separating the recyclable stuff, and taking it all to the paper/plastic recycling bins. Then I had to find homes for the binders themselves. My runs kept me sane for the past few weeks!

Hi to everyone, is anybody preparing for any Turkey Trots???

Vicci - Forgive my ignorance. Train station? Kudos to you for taking the time to sort anything recyclable. Also, thanks for the reminder about Turkey Trots. I may have to do some research...

Well, fellow yoga-ers, I have to report that I am totally digging my new yoga classes!!! I've done yoga b4 off & on, but it's been years. I've tried 2 instructors & 3 different classes so far, and they've all been great. It will actually be tough to go from this packed week to a 1-2 times/week schedule. It's gorgeous out right now, so I feel a bit guilty not getting out to run. Which brings me to my question....

When you do yoga, do you typically also run on the same day? Does it depend on the yoga intensity? There is a Power Flow yoga class late today, and I'm debating whether it would be good or bad to go for a midday run first?

TKay - yes, even the abbreviated version was witty :-)

Vicci - train station? You guys have properties coming out of your ears

I'm not sure yet about the Turkey Trot (since our Tday plans might be changing), but I am doing a 5K this Sat. It just popped up on my radar & is for a fantastic cause (Girls on the Run), so I think I'll do it. It's small, so I think I might be able to do well (I can never decide if this is bad of me, or smart of me :-)

I'm sorry, I thought that at least once I would have whined about having to repaint or do some maintenance on this building!

Way back when DH was very busy with several projects (he is an architect) and we had another person working for us full-time, we bought this building and restored it as an office. It has been up for sale for several years (we weren't really trying hard to sell it, though) and, since we now have a signed sales agreement on it, we decided to move everything out. It's amazing what a huge amount of stuff is (was!!!) in that building!

Susan, I vote for "smart of you"!!!

Raining cats and dogs here, windy and cold... that means (drumroll) no run today. The weather doesn't look good for the remainder of the week so I may have to do a little modification to my bike sooner than I anticipted - that way I can spin in the basement (it looks like the winter is upon us).

Vicci - Couldn't see the pictures. I remember the pictures of the station from before though. Oh, I probably wasn't all that calm - I get a little perturbed when people try to kill me. I do flash back to my military days every once in a while.

Susan - Good for you on your race and the yoga. Have a great time getting flexible.

Off to study on a wet Veteran's Day.
Les

Susan - When I was more regular about yoga, I usually did it alone. But that had more to do with time management than overdoing it. I would think a light run would be fine on yoga day.

Vicci - You meant it. A train station. Wow. I can imagine how much stuff you could keep inside, as a matter of fact.

Les - Sorry about the arrival of winter weather for you. Hope there are still a number of good-to-get-outside days ahead this year. How's your mouth feeling?

Run yesterday, walk/run/weights today. Man, am I boring or what? Tomorrow is the party for my youngest ds (turning 8). I'm glad work is slow because I have errands to run for prep. Hope everyone's well.

Tkay, consistent is the word you are looking for, I think. Good job! So how many 7-8 year olds will you have underfoot tomorrow? Sounds like an adventure!

Vicci, I had an "almost 4 miles" myself, today. It was nice, because it was the first time in a while that I felt like I could have kept going instead of feeling like I was lucky I made it home! Are YOU planning a turkey trot? I am working Thanksgiving and the day after, but I think DH and the kids are tentatively planning to do the local trot before heading off to my sister's house, about an hour away.

Susan, when I do yoga, it is about a 20 - 25 minute show, so it is almost never the only thing I do that day, and it really doesn't enter into my decision as to what other workout(s) I will do. I am more likely to cut my cardio short if I do weights. But if I was doing a long power yoga class, I might do a shorter run that day.

Supposed to turn cold and wet this weekend, and I work tomorrow, so this may be the last outdoor run for a while. But we'll see. Remember I am trying not to be a wimp!

Ok I'm a week behind but.......

Susan, I find that yoga is sometimes really good for me after a run (i.e. same day) because it will get me to really stretch out all the muscles that tighten during a run (for me: quads and soleus). Even though I may stretch before and/or after a run, the yoga is still good. Haven't really tried doing yoga BEFORE running so I can't say about that.

My 1/2 was last Sun. I did finish but the time was a bit slower than I wanted. Course that was due to the d@man huge hill at mile 9 but whatever.......... My friend was the pace bike (motorcycle) for the full marathon and my goal was to finish the half before I saw him pacing the marathon leader. That I DID accomplish (but apparently by only a few minutes).
The top marathoner finished in under 2:30 Dang, I can't even run that fast for 1 minute, let alone 26 miles. I think the first place in the 1/2 was somewhere just over an hour.
