Can I wear this??
DH and I are going to a wedding- its really soon and it will be on a sunday at 11am in State College PA. The invitation looked more formal than DH led me to believe. Its a very close friend of his- not that should matter for what I wear though. I found nothing in the last two days that I like but remembered this skirt. The material is heavy enough for Nov but what do you think? The top is a sweater and both the top and wrap are more off white than white. I think I would need different shoes for this time of year. What do you all think?
ETA Well I was on Anthropolgie's website and think that this skirt and sweater should be fine- there was a dress kind of in the same colors so maybe I just need some help with shoes...

I wouldn't wear the top and wrap. It's the shade my wedding dress was. I'd wear black before I wore cream to a wedding.
Boden has some really cute winter dresses this season. I really like this one http://www.bodenusa.com/en-US/Womens...ool-Dress.html

So are you saying the wedding is not as formal as you first thought, so that is why you are thinking of wearing the skirt and sweater combo?
An 11 am Sunday wedding does sound a little more casual than a Saturday afternoon evening wedding. So I think a skirt/sweater combo could work. I kind of agree with mbrogier that perhaps the cream top might "compete" with the bride. My bigger issue would be I would not know what color/type of shoes to wear with that outfit in November. I don't think you could wear off-white, and I don't know if black would be too stark with the outfit. Did you have any other ideas of shoes?
I have seen lots of cute dresses all over, at LOFT, etc for not a whole lot of money, so if you are able to buy something new I'll bet you can find a dress.

That outfit is lovely, but it says "spring" to me and I would be hesitant about the color of the top.

Part of my problem is that I don't know much about the wedding- and neither does DH! I was going to wear a pair of dressier light tan/creamy pants with a dressy sweater but now I'm thinking I need to be a bit more dressed up. I love that orange skirt and didn't really want to buy anything if I didn't need to. Not even sure if the bride is wearing a white wedding dress- the couple is our age- 46ish and although its a first wedding for both they are keeping it low key.
So I think maybe I'll just ask my DH's friend! Might even go back to the pants since the skirt/shoe thing isn't working!

I love the WHBM dress! I am a fan of their stuff anyway. If you do decide to get this one there is a coupon for 20% off $100 or $20 off $80. http://www.retailmenot.com/view/whit...lackmarket.com
I love their stuff b/c it is comfortable and easy to wear. I have several of their dresses that I can wear when I travel.
I know that doesn't help about the wedding but I still love the dress! Honestly, I know here at least, it really varies what you see people wear to weddings. The one I just attended, some of the young girls looked they they were going clubbing (super short and tight dresses)and that was for 2pm wedding. So I think as long as you are dressed well and not in white or light cream you will be fine.

I disagree with the others who think the sweater combination would be "competing" with the bride. I know that the conventional wisdom is that white/cream competes with the bride, but there is nothing remotely bridal about about those sweaters. I don't think it would cause any confusion whatsoever.
However, I do agree with posters who say it looks pretty springy. It would ultimately depend on the fabric the skirt is made of, but the combo gives me the impression of spring.
That being said, I honestly think it's okay to wear what you feel good in. No bride is going to look at you in that outfit and think "She wore THAT to my wedding!?!?"
My guess is that the groom's response is going to be "We don't care what you wear. Just come and celebrate with us!"
Finally, the black patterned dress is very cute and versatile. I vote you buy it and get lots of wear out of it.

Thanks eveyone for your advice!! I am finding it so helpful
My worry about the orange dress was that it was too springy-and trying to find shoes proved that! Not too worried about the white- my mom wore a winter white suit to my brothers wedding and it worked great! I love that skirt and wanted to wear it but well, its not for november in the north- maybe in fl.
I bought the white house black market black pattern dress- it fit beautifully!!! And I already have shoes, a purse, earrings etc- just needed the dress. I also found this just in case it is really more informal and a rainy cold day to wear with heels and leggings

I 'm not a fashionista but my first impression was 'spring'. It's definitely fall/winter season here and has been for a while. I think darker, more fall looking would be better.
I also agree that unless you wear a horse blanket few people will care, but you may feel uncomfortable.

yes i bought in the spring a few years ago and love love it and thought that i could wear it. i really have nothing else well, til today and i bought the two new outfits. i do feel better with the new dress and tunic although i was trying to make do- just couldn't do it. i'm sure you're right about just being there but i can certainly look presentable! i love my new things and needed some wintery dressy things.

I LOVE the first black/white dress that you posted! Glad it fits you well.
Not as wild about the 2nd black/white outfit, esp for a wedding. Maybe it's just not my style.
I guess it's too late, but I was going to add that the slacks/sweater you mentioned would be fine for a morning wedding.

The black and white dress can go for all seasons and State College is known for crazy weather. They had six inches of snow in October! Where is the wedding and reception being held?
In all the events that I have attended here, wedding and others, what you just chose looks perfect. The other outfit would be too springy for this time in Nov.

I hope you are not offended by my comments but I think that the first outfit is looking a bit older that the second one.
I love the second one, great choice. It is really nice. If the climate is cold I would wear a nice pair of booths for the ceremony and bring an elegant shoe for the reception.
Have fun!

I heard back from the wedding couple- they said a comfortable dress so i'll go with the dress in nice weather or, like JHarris said, if the weather is icky i'll go with the tunic and leggings.
i think i'll wear the same shoes for the wedding and reception- both in the same place- groom to be keeps saying "low key"
thanks for your help!
the wedding and reception will be at the Nittany Lion Inn. I think I'll google it- DH seems to know about it.

It's a lovely place. A major part of the Penn State Campus. We stayed there a lot when DH was commuting to his company. Food is good. There is a large, can't remember how many stories, parking garage almost next to it. You will be very close to the townhouse where we stay now when in State College. I hope the event is not this coming weekend which is an at home football game Traffic will be bad since the Inn is on one of the major roads headed towards the stadium.

Cheryl- I have no fashion advice but just wanted to chime in that if you meet up with Joan, I'd love to join, as I live in State College. Just PM me and let me know the details! I haven't seen Joan for awhile but we've had some nice meals together in town.

Thank you! You could definitley tell John was nervous! And he was a good sport with all the Korean ceremonies. The bride was smiling in every single shot I took! She is such a lovely person- they are so great together-

Cheryl - You and your husband look great! I like the jewelry you wore with the dress.
My cousin is engaged to a Korean woman (from Korea). With their mix of traditions, he's Jewish, I bet it will be an interesting wedding!

Wonderful pix -- thanks for sharing!
And the dress looks fantastic on you; you wear it much better than the model did.
